THE SACRED TRIDIUM HOLY THURSDAY T oday we celebrate one of the great liturgical dichotomies. We begin the liturgy with a procession of celebration, and we continue to the reading of the Passion, which reaches its zenith with the Lord calling out, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit ; and when he had said this he breathed his last. It is as if we move from joy and celebration to utter defeat and emptiness. However, that is the essence of our entire Lenten journey, and our beginning of Holy Week. One of the most important aspects of discipleship is gaining a deeper understanding of our Faith, and the details relating to what we do and why we do it. Throughout Lent, we have provided several opportunities to enhance your spiritual growth through prayer, fasting and works of charity. We pray that, during these 40 days, the Lord has blessed and enriched all of you who enrolled in the Order of Penitents, carried your Lenten crosses, supported the Rice Bowl campaign, attended adult formation, soup, stations, outreach and many other activities. Now we prepare to move on to the Paschal Triduum and the great 50 days of the Easter season! As companions on the journey, may we gain courage for discipleship so we can more confidently proclaim, in word and deed, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! On the evening of Holy Thursday we gather together and do something strange: We wash feet. We literally follow the Lord s command to serve one another by rededicating ourselves to ministerial service through participating in this unique communal action. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. In the Middle East, where people s feet easily became dusty, this washing was an act of hospitality, usually performed by servants. This explains why the apostle Peter was embarrassed and told Jesus not to do it. But Jesus warned Peter, Unless I wash you, you can have no share with me. Jesus then said, I have given you an example; You must do for each other what I have done for you. Jesus left us an example of perfect charity by which we carry out his command to love one another. Please volunteer to have your feet washed, by signing the list in the church commons. We need twelve people. The new Holy Oils, blessed and consecrated by our Bishop earlier in the week, are dramatically presented to our local community. By accepting them, we affirm our belief in what they symbolize. A Solemn Procession follows Communion in which the consecrated elements are carried out of the worship space. Jesus continues on his journey to Golgotha... Night Watch begins Night Watch invites us to keep watch with him as he did with his J esus disciples in the Garden of Gethsemene. The Eucharist is placed in repose until 10:30pm. Night Watch will conclude with a thirty minute meditative prayer service at 10:30pm.
GOOD FRIDAY his day is part of something bigger than itself. The T liturgies of Good Friday have no formal beginnings or endings, no greetings or dismissals. The services are all part of the single, three-day liturgy of the Triduum. STATIONS OF THE CROSS 12:00 pm LITURGY OF THE PASSION 3:00 pm he Passion in John s Gospel shows us T how God s glory is accomplished in the suffering and death of Jesus. John portrays Jesus as very much in charge of his own destiny. As the Christ, he is convinced of the value of his sacrifice and in the victory of the cross. Following the proclamation of the Passion, a large wooden cross is solemnly carried into the assembly. As we reverence this sign of our redemption we are challenged to consider the true weight of the crosses that each of us carries in life. The Eucharist is not celebrated today, however we are invited to receive Communion from hosts consecrated during the evening Mass of the Lord s Supper. This is our connection to the abiding presence of Christ with us Through his death, we receive life! TENEBRAE 7:30 pm Tenebrae is a Latin word, meaning darkness and shadows. The service is comprised of selections from the Psalms and the Book of Lamentations, accompanied by the extinguishing of candles and the dimming of lights. It has a surprise ending that challenges the level of our faith! HOLY SATURDAY A DAY OF REST n Latin, Holy Saturday is Sabbatum Sanctum, the I Holy Sabbath. It is perhaps the strangest, most mysterious, most puzzling day on the liturgical calendar. The mood this morning is very different than it was yesterday. We know what happened; it was horrible! We huddle together in prayer, seeking consolation, understanding, courage and guidance. Will we let the events that surround us in life weaken our faith, or strengthen it? In the tomb, Jesus rested on the Sabbath. The Church rests in Christ today. The day should be marked by a sense of quiet contemplation, at least spiritually, even if not physically. Nothing is celebrated in church. Yes, we gather for RCIA rehearsal and the blessing of food, but they are not liturgical celebrations of the kind we are used to. In essence, we watch, we wait, we hold our breath - expecting, trusting, believing that something awesome is about to happen. In the truest sense, this event is not just something that happened to Jesus, but the New Life of Easter is offered as a gift to us and to all who believe! BLESSING OF EASTER FOOD HOLY SATURDAY 11:30 AM his ancient tradition is popular among the Slavic, T Ukrainian, Polish and Italian cultures. The blessed food is shared at the Easter table. Baskets are usually decorated with white or embroidered linen as well as flowers or sprigs of greens. This is a wonderful custom to initiate in your household. Children are also welcome to bring their Easter Baskets for a special blessing. A sampling of what you might find in a typical basket, and its symbolism: Bread - Jesus, the Bread of Life; Butter - God s goodness; Eggs - new life and Christ s Resurrection; Horseradish - the Passion of Christ; Salt and pepper - You are salt of the earth; Sausage, ham or other meat - generosity; Pastries - the sweetness of God s love; Wine - the richness and blessings of life; Lamb mold of butter, sugar or cake - representing Jesus as the Lamb of God.
THE EASTER VIGIL 8:30 pm t nightfall on Holy Saturday, the A blessed Sabbath is over. The first day of the week begins. After the Sabbath, according to custom, the first work to be done is to build a fire and to kindle the evening lamp. That is what the Church does. That is how the Easter Vigil begins. On this night, every member of the Church is invited to gather with the soon-to-be-baptized. We keep watch together. We settle down around the campfire and listen to the paschal scriptures proclaimed. These are the epic renditions of our family tradition. St. Augustine said that, on this night above all other nights, The Church keeps watch for the Lord and the Lord keeps watch over the Church! By the light of the newly kindled Paschal Candle, we listen to the stories that recall the creation of the universe and the origin of the human race. These are not in any way meant to be historical accounts but a testimony of faith in the one true God who is in all and through all. We then hear about the Lord s deliverance from slavery in the Exodus/Passover event which leads to the deliverance from sin that Christ won for each and every one of us. After the proclamation of the Easter Gospel, we call forth to the waters of Baptism and the Sacrament of Confirmation those who have newly professed their faith in the Lord and his Church. As we celebrate the Easter Sacraments with them, it is a time of renewal offered each of us to rededicate ourselves to a life based on these Baptismal promises. Our gifts are then offered at the altar of God and the holy Eucharist is consecrated anew. Christ is re-presented in our midst once again, and all is well with us and with all the earth. Human history is renewed and hope is restored! Christ is risen, let us rejoice, Alleluia! Scripture Reflection n his letter to the Philippians, I our Second Reading on this, St. Paul writes, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Everything we hear today and during Holy Week relates to this statement. For some 2,000 years scholars and theologians have debated what the phrase emptied himself means. As is sometimes the case, in the midst of these debates and discussions they lose focus of what is really Paul s point and teaching perhaps. One of the things Paul might be trying to get us to think about is emptying ourselves to a certain extent. If you have ever been a retreat or been part of a spiritual exercise, you may be encouraged to empty yourself so you are prepared to in reality add something. Jesus gave much up to be the Son of Man. At this point in our Lenten journey, we need to grasp that He gave up His life so that we might have life. That is what should be on our minds as we hear the Passion today and as we continue and complete our own preparation for Christ s resurrection on Easter. Have you ever heard someone say about someone else He (or she) is so full of himself (or herself)? Jesus was not full of Himself. He emptied Himself, and that is something we, too, must strive to do to be His disciple.
