Fed by the Holy Spirit, we nurture our faith through private prayer, sacraments and liturgy, through life-long learning and teaching of Gospel values, and through love and support of each other. Empowered by the same Spirit, we live our faith in action through ministries of service, social justice, evangelization and witness, because all people are called to one and the same goal: unity with God, now and forever. Readings and Resources Sunday Reflection Our Sanctuary Lamp OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are hard of face and obstinate of heart (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that he was amazed at their lack of faith (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Our sanctuary lamp is a 7-day candle that is always lit above the tabernacle. If you would like to contribute $20 to the cost of the weekly candle we will print a Thank You in the bulletin. You are also welcome to make the donation in memory of a loved one or loved ones. There are envelopes on the book racks for your donation. Just include a paper that states how you would like your name and/or the names for memorials printed. Names will be printed in the bulletin in the order in which they are received, either in the collection or at the office. Our Sanctuary Lamp this week is lit through the generosity of: Joseph Zoubek In memory of: Rosemary Zoubek Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Treasures From Our Tradition Last week s Treasure mentioned the Nuns of the Battlefield, religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and singleminded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the Nuns of the Battlefield stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty. Holy Ghost Parish The Missionary Priest from Sri Lanka will be celebrating Mass at Holy Ghost the weekend of July 14 and 15. Please be as generous as you can towards this Mission. The Diocese of Batticaloa Sri Lanka Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country. The country of Sri Lanka has three ethnic groups and four religions i.e. Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Christianity was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1505 by the Portuguese. At present, Christians are a minority consisting of 7% of the total population numbering almost 21 million people in Sri Lanka. The Diocese of Batticaloa in Sri Lanka is situated in the Eastern part of the country and covers two districts. The major religion is Hinduism in the Diocese. The Catholic population is 42,609 out of 1,208,745 people. This was a newly erected diocese in 2012. This Diocese has been affected by civil war which lasted for thirty years from 1983 through 2009. It was also affected by a Tsunami on 26 th December in 2004. In both these disasters many people lost their lives, houses, and properties. Churches and rectories have been destroyed due to these manmade and natural disasters. Thousands of people stayed in the refugee camps and were displaced from their ancestral homes. Thousands of people have been killed in this war. This Diocese consists of 26 parishes. There are 43 Diocesan priests and 17 religious priests, 79 religious sisters and 14 religious brothers to serve in our Diocese. The majority of the people are practicing Hinduism, and the second majority is Islam. The diocese has drawn up a few projects to rebuild the faith of the people. They are supporting: 1. Children with special needs; Due to the long civil war we have a higher number of disabled (differently abled) children. We have started a special home The Ozanam for them. 2. Livelihood program for the volunteer catechists; 95% of the catholic student s study in government schools as the Catholics are a minority in number, and these schools are not interested in appointing Catholic teachers. The diocese has appointed 100 teachers and are paying salaries of $50 per month. 3. Formation program for catechists; Since we have shortage of priests, the catechists are necessary in large geographical parishes as well as in rural parishes. For an example, the strength of the students in large parishes is 600 to 1200 in different grades. In rural parishes 150 to 400 students will be following the catechism classes. 4. New evangelization; This program will focus on the border villages in which the majority of people belong to other religions, for an example Hindus and Buddhists. The diocese will instill new methods to do the evangelization to proclaim the good news and giving hand in hand social services as well. We are in desperate need spiritually and financially to implement these projects. We humbly request you to consider our request for the good cause to spread the good news in the newly erected diocese in Sri Lanka. Page 6
