The Service for the Lord s Day 16th Sunday after Pentecost September 9, 2018 GATHERING Musical Prelude Come Christians, Join To Sing Welcome Barbara Scarboro Opening Prayer *Call to Worship (Psalm 125) One: Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. All: As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people, from this time on and forevermore. One: For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest on the land allotted to the righteous, so that the righteous might not stretch out their hands to do wrong. All: Do good, O Lord, to those who are good, and to those who are upright in their hearts. One: But those who turn aside to their own crooked ways the Lord will lead away with evildoers. Peace be upon Israel! *Opening Hymn # 356 Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession We say that we are good listeners, God of holy ways, but we turn stopped up ears to the vulnerable around us. We say that we live as your people, but too often, put ourselves ahead of the people we love. We say that we are people of faith, but then try to overwhelm people with words, rather than acts of service. We say so much, God of compassion, that we cannot hear you calling us to faithful living. Have mercy on us and send us out to offer kindness to the lonely. Have mercy on us and send us to be generous with the love you offer. Have mercy on us, so we might be open to all the chances we will have to follow, and to serve alongside our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. (Moment of silent reflection) * Stand as you are able
