As We Prepare for Worship YOUR CHILDREN AND YOUR CHILDREN S CHILDREN It has been said, The Church is never more than one generation away from extinction. This bold statement perhaps finds support in the admonition found in today s Old Testament Reading. There Moses writes this concerning the works of the Lord, Make them known to your children and your children s children (Deuteronomy 4:9). Each generation has the responsibility, and privilege, of passing on the works of God to the next generation. While much of this teaching happens in the setting of a local congregation, the Christian instruction that happens in the home, in our own family, is key. This teaching is always centered in Jesus Christ, the one through whom our Lord has worked the mightiest work of all our salvation. That same Savior promises that even the gates of hell will not prevail against His Church! What is being made known in your home? Prelude Welcome The Ringing of the Bell Opening Hymn: Be Strong in the Lord LSB 665 [Tune LSB 804] Be strong in the Lord In armor of light, With helmet and sword, With shield for the fight; On prayer be dependent, Be belted and shod, In breastplate resplendent: The armor of God. Integrity gird You round to impart The truth of His Word As truth in your heart; His righteousness wearing As breastplate of mail, His victory sharing, Be strong to prevail. With eagerness shod Stand firm in your place, Or go forth for God With news of His grace; No foe shall disarm you Nor force you to yield, No arrow can harm you With faith as your shield. Though Satan presume To test you and try, In helmet and plume Your head shall be high; Beset by temptation Be true to your Lord, Your helmet salvation And Scripture your sword. 2

So wield well your blade, Rejoice in its pow rs, Fight on undismayed For Jesus is ours! Then in Him victorious Your armor lay down, To praise, ever glorious, His cross and His crown. 1984 Hope Publishing Co. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, no. 100012112. Stand Confession and Absolution P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Introit: Psalm 51:7, 10-12; antiphon: v. 2 P Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, C and cleanse me from my sin! P Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; C wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. P Create in me a clean heart, O God, C and renew a right spirit within me. 3

Kyrie P Cast me not away from your presence, C and take not your Holy Spirit from me. P Restore to me the joy of your salvation, C and uphold me with a willing spirit. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, C and cleanse me from my sin! P O Lord, C have mercy upon us P O Christ, C have mercy upon us P O Lord, C have mercy upon us T Service of the Word T Hymn of Praise: All Glory Be to God Alone 4

You only are the Holy One And over all are Lord alone. O Jesus Christ, we glorify You and the Spirit, Lord Most High; With Him You evermore shall be One in the Father s majesty. 1941 Concordia Publishing House. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, no. 100012112. Salutation and Collect of the Day P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. O God, the source of all that is just and good, nourish in us every virtue and bring to completion every good intent, that we may grow in grace and bring forth the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. Sit Old Testament Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9 ( Listen to the statues and just decrees that I am teaching you. ) 1 And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2 You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you... 6 Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. 7 For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? 8 And what great nation is there, that has statutes and just decrees so righteous as all this law that I set before you today? 9 Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children s children L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 5

Epistle: Ephesians 6:10-20 ( Put on the whole armor of God. ) 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Hymn of the Day: By Grace I m Saved LSB 566 By grace I m saved, grace free and boundless; My soul, believe and doubt it not. Why stagger at this word of promise? Has Scripture ever falsehood taught? No! Then this word must true remain: By grace you too will life obtain. By grace! None dare lay claim to merit; Our works and conduct have no worth. God in His love sent our Redeemer, Christ Jesus, to this sinful earth; His death did for our sins atone, And we are saved by grace alone. By grace God s Son, our only Savior, Came down to earth to bear our sin. Was it because of your own merit That Jesus died your soul to win? No, it was grace, and grace alone, That brought Him from His heav nly throne. 6

By grace! This ground of faith is certain; As long as God is true, it stands. What saints have penned by inspiration, What in His Word our God commands, Our faith in what our God has done Depends on grace grace through His Son. By grace to timid hearts that tremble, In tribulation s furnace tried, By grace, in spite of fear and trouble, The Father s heart is open wide. Where could I help and strength secure If grace were not my anchor sure? By grace! On this I ll rest when dying; In Jesus promise I rejoice; For though I know my heart s condition, I also know my Savior s voice. My heart is glad, all grief has flown Since I am saved by grace alone. Stand Holy Gospel: Mark 7:14-23 (What comes out of a man is what makes him unclean. ). P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 14 And he called the people to him again and said to them, Hear me, all of you, and understand: 15 There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him. 17 And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. 18 And he said to them, Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled? (Thus he declared all foods clean.) 20 And he said, What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. 7

Preface P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. Service of the Sacrament P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, out of love for His fallen creation, humbled Himself by taking on the form of a servant, becoming obedient unto death, even death upon a cross. Risen from the dead, He has freed us from eternal death and given us life everlasting. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: 10

Sanctus: Holy, Holy, Holy Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. The Words of Our Lord Instituting Holy Communion Proclamation of Christ P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. 11

P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: The Lord s Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C Amen. Agnus Dei 12

Oh, that my God would grant me grace To know and do His will! Order my footsteps by Thy Word And make my heart sincere; Let sin have no dominion, Lord, But keep my conscience clear. Assist my soul, too apt to stray, A stricter watch to keep; And should I e er forget Thy way, Restore Thy wand ring sheep. Make me to walk in Thy commands Tis a delightful road Nor let my head or heart or hands Offend against my God. O Jesus, King Most Wonderful LSB 554 O Jesus, King most wonderful! O Conqueror renowned! I Know My Faith Is Founded LSB 587 I know my faith is founded On Jesus Christ, my God and Lord; And this my faith confessing, Unmoved I stand on His sure Word. Our reason cannot fathom The truth of God profound; Who trusts in human wisdom Relies on shifting ground. God s Word is all-sufficient, It makes divinely sure; And trusting in its wisdom, My faith shall rest secure. Increase my faith, dear Savior, For Satan seeks by night and day To rob me of this treasure And take my hope of bliss away. But, Lord, with You beside me, I shall be undismayed; And led by Your good Spirit, I shall be unafraid. Abide with me, O Savior, A firmer faith bestow; Then I shall bid defiance To ev ry evil foe. In faith, Lord, let me serve You; Though persecution, grief, and pain Should seek to overwhelm me, Let me a steadfast trust retain; And then at my departure, Lord, take me home to You, Your riches to inherit As all You said holds true. Wield God s Word, the weapon glorious; Against all foes be thus victorious, For God protects you from them all. Fear not the hordes of hell, Here is Emmanuel. Hail the Savior! The strong foes yield To Christ, our shield, And we, the victors, hold the field. Cast afar this world s vain pleasure And boldly strive for heav nly treasure. Be steadfast in the Savior s might. Trust the Lord, who stands beside you, For Jesus from all harm will hide you. By faith you conquer in the fight. Take courage, weary soul! Look forward to the goal! Joy awaits you. The race well run, Your long war won, Your crown shines splendid as the sun. Wisely fight, for time is fleeting; The hours of grace are fast retreating; Short, short is this our earthly way. When the Lord the dead will waken And sinners all by fear are shaken, The saints with joy will greet that day. Praise God, our triumph s sure. We need not long endure Scorn and trial. Our Savior King His own will bring To that great glory which we sing. 16
