The memory verses in this series are taken from the King James Version of the Bible. If you are using another version, you may need to adapt the explanations slightly. Adaptations for the English Standard Version are provided in the GNC resource pack. Preschool Memory Verse Review Psalm 31:14. Teaching the Memory Verse Memory Verse: 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Introduction: Have you ever had someone say, I promise! to you then not keep that promise? Or have you ever broken a promise to someone? Broken promises often cause hurt feelings and can even ruin friendships. Our verse today is a promise from someone who ALWAYS keeps His promises no matter what! Presentation: Explanation: Application: Repetition: (Read the verse from your Bible while children follow along on the visual.) Our verse today is found in the book of 1 John in the New Testament. In fact, it s practically at the end of the New Testament! Let s say the New Testament books of the Bible together until we get to 1 John. (Use the Books of the Bible chart.) Who do you think wrote 1 John? (John.) John was one of Jesus disciples. He was there when Jesus taught and healed people, when Jesus died on the cross and when Jesus came alive again. After Jesus went back to Heaven, John became a leader over the other followers of Jesus. He wrote the book of John, which tells about Jesus, and he also wrote three letters (1, 2 and 3 John) to encourage people in the churches to know and follow God. John was writing about things he had seen with his own eyes and heard with his own ears! The people he wrote to believed that what John wrote was from God. You also can know that these words are from God to you! If we confess our sins To confess means to agree with God about your sin. It is to call it sin as God does and be willing not to do that sin anymore. he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins Faithful means God can be depended on no matter what! Just means God does what is right and good all the time. These two words together tell us two of God s attributes what God is like. The two words together mean that God will absolutely do what He says He will do. When you confess your sin to Him, He absolutely promises to forgive you! You can depend on Him to keep this promise. and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness God will cleanse you (make you clean) from your sin and take it away. He will also help you live to please Him and live a righteous (right with God) life. Saved: If you have believed in Jesus as your Savior, this is a very special promise for you. After you believe in Jesus you may still choose to sin. If that happens, remember this verse. Confess your sin to God. Ask Him to help you not do that sin again. Thank Him for His forgiveness and that He keeps His promise to forgive. Jesus invites you to come to Him for forgiveness when you sin. Unsaved: If you have not yet believed in Jesus as your Savior, He wants to forgive your sin! This promise is for you too. If you will put your trust completely in Jesus for forgiveness of sin, He will forgive you! He will give you a friendship with Him that starts now and lasts forever. He will give you a want to to do what is right and please Him. Will you make the important decision to believe in Jesus today? Students Choice (Let students choose their favorite verse game. You can play more than one game if you say the verse once with each game.) 2 Follow Me: Peter Learns from Christ 2013 Child Evangelism Fellowship Inc. Gospel Activity God So Loved the World How many of you know John 3:16? (Quote together.) So many of you know this verse, but doing what this verse says is much more important! (Show heart.) John 3:16 talks about love. Did you know God has a special love for you? It s called agape love and it s not like the love you and I have. The love you and I have can be conditional. We love someone if he loves us. If someone we love does something mean to us, we may choose not to love him anymore. But God s love is unconditional. That means God loves you no matter what you do! His love is an everlasting (forever) love (Jeremiah 31:3). (Open heart to reveal world.) The reason you and I are alive in this world is because God created us. God made this whole world by just speaking all the beautiful flowers and trees, sea creatures and birds, insects and animals. There are so many wonderful things in this world, but world in this verse means you and me. God made us and He loves us as a father. (Show Jesus, world and open heart.) Because God loves you and me so much, He did something about our biggest problem. That problem is sin. The Bible says, (read Ecclesiastes 7:20). All of us have sinned. Sin is anything you think, say or do that breaks God s laws. Even doing just one wrong thing, like talking back to your mom or being mean to your brother, makes you guilty of breaking God s law. No one had to teach you how to sin. You were born with the want to to sin and do things your way instead of God s way. You and I deserve God s punishment for sin, which is separation from God forever in a place of punishment. But God sent Jesus, His perfect Son, to Earth to make a way for sin to be forgiven. Jesus came to Earth as a baby and grew up just like you and me. But He was all God and all man. One day Jesus let men nail Him to a cross, where He bled and died to take the punishment for all the wrong things you and I have done. Jesus body was buried in a tomb and people thought He was gone forever, but He wasn t! On the third day He came back to life! He showed Himself to many of His followers then went back to Heaven. And He is alive, ruling in Heaven today. (Close heart.) The last part of John 3:16 is a promise for you and me. It says, Whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. God promises that if you believe (trust completely) in the Lord Jesus as the only one who died and rose again to pay for your sin, you will be forgiven and have everlasting (forever) life. Everlasting life begins the moment you believe in Jesus and will someday continue with Him in Heaven. Have you believed in Jesus? You can do that right now. Lesson INTRODUCTION Aiden kicked at some stray stones on the sidewalk in front of his house. He was angry. I can t believe it! he thought. I got in a fight with Aaron again! I ve trusted Jesus as my Savior from sin but I m still fighting and swearing and doing all kinds of bad stuff. Maybe I should just give up trying to obey God. Will Jesus even forgive me? Have you ever had thoughts like these? Maybe you ve trusted Jesus as your Savior but it seems like you still sin a lot. Believe it or not, even Peter struggled with sin. Once he did something so bad he thought Jesus would never forgive him. Listen to find out what he did! PROGRESSION OF EVENTS Slide 01 Peter and the other disciples were eating a special holiday meal with Jesus in an upstairs room. The holiday was called Passover. It was a celebration of the time many years before when God had set His people free from slavery in Egypt. But the meal didn t turn out to be much of a celebration. Jesus said that one of the disciples would betray Him give Him to His enemies! The disciples began asking who would do such a thing! Peter promised the Lord he would go to prison or even die for Him! But Jesus said something shocking to Peter. The Bible says, (read Luke 22:34 from your Bible). Create the three parts of this visual as indicated below. (See GNC resource pack.) Cut out two halves of a red heart with a place to join them together at the bottom. Cut out a small circle with a tab at the bottom and in the center write Jesus or paste a picture of Him. Cut a slightly larger circle with a tab and in the center draw or paste a picture of the world. Join the visuals together with snaps or paper fasteners as indicated. You could also share this Gospel presentation with the heart, Jesus and world visuals created on paper plates. Jesus World World Jesus Passover the yearly Jewish feast celebrating the deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt the night the death angel passed over the house marked with the blood of the lamb. (The Children s Ministry Resource Bible, Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, TN, 1991, p. 1670.) For more on the Passover see Exodus 11:1 12:42. Occasionally ask for a volunteer to read. Place a marker in your Bible and have the child turn to it. Lesson 6 3

These words must have hit Peter like a splash of cold water. He would never deny Jesus! Slide 02 After eating the meal, Jesus and the disciples went to a garden called Gethsemane. By now it was late at night. Jesus prayed for a long time. Suddenly the garden was overrun by Roman soldiers! They tied Jesus up and led Him away. Peter decided to follow the soldiers and see where they took Jesus. Have preschoolers crow like a rooster. Slide 03 Quietly Peter followed the soldiers to the high priest s house. Peter decided to stay in the courtyard outside the house, where he could see and hear what was going on inside. Listen to what happened next. (Read Luke 22:55-62.) Peter had done a terrible thing he had denied the Lord! Slide 04 Teaching Card Show the card and have the children repeat the statement: Jesus can forgive my sin! Tell them that anytime you call out Word Up! they are to shout the phrase back. Call it out during transition times, times when they are restless or just anytime! Sing The Prayer Song. Have you ever done a terrible thing? Even though you have trusted Jesus as your Savior, you still sin. Maybe you still lose your temper. You are trying to stop swearing but when you get angry, those bad words still come out of your mouth. Or you are trying to stop looking at bad things online but you still end up looking at them. When you sin, you might wonder if you really do know Jesus as your Savior. When that happens, remember that Jesus has promised to never leave you. (Read Hebrews 13:5.) He has given you a new life on the inside. (Read 2 Corinthians 5:17.) But those old desires to sin are still there and sometimes you give in to them. But Jesus invites you to come to Him for forgiveness when you sin. That is important to know, especially when you ve done something terrible. Slide 05 Peter knew he had done something terrible when he said he didn t even know the Lord Jesus. Can you imagine how sad and sorry he felt? He had told Jesus he would go to prison or die for Him. But fear had taken over and Peter had denied the Lord to save himself. Since this lesson is focused on Christian growth, the message of salvation is condensed. You will want to reinforce the presentation of the Gospel at another point in the class hour as noted in the schedule. For preschoolers present the Gospel using Gospel Hearts, p. 18. Sing Nothing But the Blood. 4 Follow Me: Peter Learns from Christ Slide 06 Jesus was put on trial and sentenced to die by being nailed to a cross. He was beaten with whips and had a crown of thorns pressed onto His head. The soldiers made Him carry His cross to the hill where He was crucified. This was one way criminals were punished in Jesus day. Two thieves were crucified with Jesus. But Jesus had never done anything wrong. We know that one disciple, John, was there when Jesus was hanging on the cross. We don t know where the other disciples were. Was Peter there, watching from a distance? Or did he stay away completely, feeling unworthy and unforgivable? The Bible doesn t tell us. But to all who loved Jesus, this was a terrible, terrible day. How could God allow Jesus to suffer and die? This was all part of God s plan. It was not a surprise to Jesus! Jesus willingly came to Earth as a baby, but He was no ordinary baby. He is the perfect Son of God! When He grew up and became a man, He fed hungry people, healed sick people and taught people about God. He taught Peter and the other disciples many lessons, including the ones we ve been learning about in Good News Club. But the reason Jesus came to Earth was to take the punishment for your sin. Sin is choosing to go your own way instead of God s way. God tells you in the Bible how He wants you to live. He tells you not to lie or steal or be disrespectful to your parents. But you were born wanting to sin instead of obeying God. (Read Romans 3:10.) No one is born righteous doing what is right all the time. Everyone has sinned. Because of sin you deserve to be separated from God forever. God has to punish sin because He is

holy completely pure from all sin. But God, who made you and loves you, doesn t want you to be separated from Him forever. That s why Jesus, God the Son, came to Earth to bleed and die on the cross to take the punishment for your sins. (Read Hebrews 9:22b.) But the good news is He didn t stay dead! He came alive again on the third day and is alive in Heaven today, ruling as King. Jesus was willing to do all that for you so your sins could be forgiven. This was God s plan. All this was God s plan but Jesus followers didn t understand it at that time. To them it was a terrible day when Jesus died a horrible death on a cross. Perhaps Peter wondered if he could ever be forgiven for denying Jesus. And now Jesus was dead! Later Peter heard the most unbelievable news! Some women had gone to the tomb where Jesus was buried to put spices on His body, as people did in those days. They found that the stone had been rolled away and Jesus body was gone! Do you know what else they saw? (Allow response.) They saw two angels, who told them Jesus had risen from the dead! The women ran to the disciples saying, Jesus is alive! The angels told us! We saw the empty tomb! Slide 07 Peter and the other disciples must have looked at the women as if they were crazy. But then Peter had a thought. What if it was true? The women certainly seemed to believe it! So Peter ran to the tomb where Jesus had been buried. He ran inside the tomb what do you think he saw? (Allow response.) He saw the burial clothes but Jesus body was gone! The Bible says, (read Luke 24:12). Could it be true? Had Jesus truly come alive again? Peter didn t need to wonder long! Shortly after that Jesus appeared to him and the other disciples twice! There was no doubt it was Jesus He was alive! But Peter had denied Jesus! Could their friendship ever be the same? Peter decided to go back to what he knew he went fishing. (Read John 21:3-6.) The disciples looked over at the stranger on the shore. Suddenly John recognized who it was! Peter! he exclaimed. It is the Lord! Slide 08 When Peter heard that, he jumped into the water! The other disciples followed in the boat, dragging the net of fish behind them. When they got to the shore Jesus said, Bring some of the fish you have caught. The disciples saw that Jesus had already built a fire and was preparing food for them. Peter went back to the boat and hauled the heavy net to shore. There were 153 fish in the net! What a catch! It was a miracle something only God can do! It was one more way Jesus showed His disciples that He is God. Then Jesus invited them, Come and eat! The disciples sat down and Jesus served them. This was the third time Jesus had revealed Himself to them. When they were finished eating, Jesus turned to Peter. (Read John 21:15-17.) Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved Him the same number of times Peter had denied he knew Jesus. Jesus wanted Peter to know that He forgave him and that He had a big plan for Peter s life. Jesus wanted Peter to feed my lambs and feed my sheep to tell others about Jesus. Jesus reached out to Peter in love and forgiveness! Slide 09 Jesus reaches out to you in love and forgiveness too. If you have trusted Jesus as Savior, Jesus invites you to come to Him for forgiveness when you sin. Maybe you have felt like Peter you have sinned and you wonder if Jesus will forgive you. Maybe you lost your temper or said some bad words. How do you continue your friendship with God then? First make sure you really do know Jesus as your Savior. If you re wondering about that, you can talk to me at the end of the lesson. If you are sure you know Jesus as your Savior, God Teaching Card Show the card and have the children repeat the statement: Jesus can forgive my sin! Tell them that anytime you call out Word Up! they are to shout the phrase back. Call it out during transition times, times when they are restless or just anytime! Sing The Prayer Song. Lesson 6 5

has a promise for you. It is our memory verse. Say it with me! (Quote 1 John 1:9 with the children.) This verse promises that if you sin after you have trusted Jesus as your Savior, and if you confess your sin (tell on yourself to God), God will forgive you! God the Holy Spirit will help you know when you have sinned. When you start feeling bad about something you have done, confess it to God. Tell Him you are sorry and ask Him to help you not sin again. If you are tempted to watch a TV show you know you shouldn t, He can help you think of something else to do during that time. If you get in trouble when you are with a certain group of friends, He can help you find other friends. Don t forget to thank God for His forgiveness and help! If you have trusted Jesus as your Savior, Jesus invites you to come to Him for forgiveness of sin. He is reaching out to you in love and forgiveness! Slide 10 Jesus was reaching out to Peter with love and forgiveness too. Do you think Peter was glad to be forgiven? He was! CLIMAX Jesus ended his conversation with Peter with the same two words He had said when He first met Peter Follow me. Jesus forgave Peter and invited him to keep on following Him. CONCLUSION Do you think Peter continued to follow Jesus? (Allow response.) Yes, he did! Oh, he still sinned and needed to ask forgiveness sometimes. But Jesus had a big plan for Peter s life. Peter became a leader in the church in Jerusalem. God used Peter to preach and to heal many people of their illnesses. God even used him to raise a woman from the dead! You can read about Peter s adventures in the book of Acts in the New Testament of the Bible. God used Peter to write part of the Bible too! Near the end of the New Testament there are two books called 1 and 2 Peter. Peter wrote these books as letters to people to encourage them to keep following Jesus. You can read these books too. As Peter looked back over the three years when Jesus was on Earth, I m sure he remembered all the lessons Jesus had taught him. Peter had learned so much from Jesus! For the rest of his life Peter was faithful to obey Jesus command to Follow Me! Slide 11 CHALLENGE Teaching Card Show the card and have the children repeat the statement: Jesus can forgive my sin! Tell them that anytime you call out Word Up! they are to shout the phrase back. Call it out during transition times, times when they are restless or just anytime! Sing I Can Know God. Jesus is saying the same thing to you that He said to Peter Follow Me! These past weeks in Good News Club we ve learned many things about what it means to follow Jesus and live a life that pleases Him. It s not easy to follow Jesus. Sometimes you will sin. But when you do, if you have trusted Jesus as Savior, Jesus invites you to come to Him for forgiveness of sin. Remember the promise in our memory verse today? (Quote 1 John 1:9 with the children.) When you sin, tell God about it right away. Tell Him you are sorry and ask Him to keep you from doing that sin again. Thank Him for His forgiveness. When you sin, will you confess your sin right away and not let anything come between you and Him? Next week you can tell us how God is helping you follow Him by coming to Him for forgiveness of sin. 6 Follow Me: Peter Learns from Christ

INVITATION Maybe you haven t made the serious decision to trust Christ as your Savior. Jesus died and rose again so your sin could be forgiven and you could have a friendship with God. (Read John 3:15.) This verse is talking to you and me that s what whosoever means! To believe in Jesus is to trust completely that Jesus is the only one who can take away your sin problem. It also means to tell God you know you ve sinned and you re sorry. It is to ask God to help you live His way instead of your way. When you have believed in Jesus, this verse says you will not perish (be separated from God forever) but will have eternal life! What is this eternal life like? You will have a special friendship with God here on Earth then one day live with Him forever in Heaven. God will help you follow Jesus your whole life! Will you trust Jesus for eternal life today? Everyone please bow your head and close your eyes. If you believed in Jesus for the first time today or would like to know more about believing in Jesus, please show me by standing up where you are. (Acknowledge responses.) You may all open your eyes. If you are standing up, you may meet me (designate time and location) and we can talk more about believing in Jesus. Review Questions 1. Invite children to come to Christ using the method given here or one you have found effective. Having children pray silently during the class time is useful when it is not possible to talk with each child individually. A sample prayer is as follows: Dear God, I know I have sinned and I am sorry. I know I deserve to be punished for my sin. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for me and came alive again. Thank You that Jesus took my punishment so I can be saved from my sins forever. Help me live to please You. In Jesus name. Amen. Whenever possible, however, meet with each child after the invitation. See How to Lead a Child to Christ, inside front cover. Sing Good News. Preschool Invitation Present the invitation using Acts 16:31 and believe on terminology. Ask those who believe on Jesus for the first time or those who want to talk to you about what believing on Jesus means to stay with you at the story rug. Review Game Jesus Forgives Cut two 8" circles from lightcolored felt or paper. (See GNC resource pack.) With a permanent marker or fabric pen write Jesus forgives on each. (If using paper, back the circles with flocked paper scraps or plan to use tape or reusable adhesive to attach them to a vertical surface during play.) Cut each circle into six wedges and place each set in a bag. Divide the class into two teams. Ask a review question. The first child to raise his hand and correctly answer the question pulls a wedge out of his team s bag and places it on a flannelboard (or other vertical surface). Continue asking questions. The first team to assemble its circle wins. Preschool Review Game Jesus Forgives Play same as above but cut one circle into four pieces. Do not split the group into teams. Have children say the phrase all together at the end. Follow Me: Peter Learns from Christ 2013 Child Evangelism Fellowship Inc. 8 Follow Me: Peter Learns from Christ Wonder Time Teaching Can I spend time with God if I sin? Has a friend ever done something that hurt you or made you upset? Maybe you got into a fight or your friend made you cry. Sometimes you work things out but sometimes you stop talking and being friends. If you have believed in Jesus, you sometimes do wrong things that hurt your friendship with God. Some people think they can lose their friendship with God or they can t be close to Him anymore. But if you have believed in Him, you have a friendship with God that is eternal it has no end. When you do something that displeases God, what should you do? (Allow response.) You need to tell Him you sinned and are sorry and ask Him to help you not to do it again. As our verse says, God will always forgive you when you come to Him. When you sin, will you confess it to God? Will you spend time with God each day this week?
