Deacon Lachlan The Holy Father, Pope Francis, will be in Ireland this week attending the World Meeting of Families in Dublin. This event is held every three years in different locations throughout the world. The 2015 meeting was held in Philadelphia. Among the many pilgrims to this event will be our own Bishop Barres and a number of clergy and families from our diocese. Also present will be the Perez Lonegro family from Rosario in Argentina. This family isthe present day Brady Bunch.or for those with even longer memories..the old movie, Yours, Mine and Ours, with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda. Pablo Lonegro was widowed and had 3 children, and Liliana Perez also a widow, had 6 children. They met and eventually married, and they now have another child, Tomas. The picture above was taken on a trip to Disney World. At the World Meeting of Families, Pablo and Liliana will have an opportunity to speak about how to pass on the faith in the home today. Liliana is a psychologist who specializes in family education. While she recognizes the importance of religious education, she insists that the most important teachers are the parents who must preach through example. Parents transmit the faith to their children by, living it with joy, giving testimony and sharing the faith with them from the moment they are born. Just as her mother did, Liliana reads bedtime stories to her children.stories of saints of the Blessed Mother stories from the Bible. When the family is thankful for something, a prayer is said in thanksgiving. Sunday Mass was.and is a family affair there was never any question of not attending Mass. She did say however, that when her kids became teenagers, she went through a period when they wanted to stand in the back like teenagers throughout the world but she said that with the solid faith formation they received.they eventually out grew the teenage rebellion stage. Besides raising ten children, Liliana has also written a series of 15 books on families that are being used in Catholic schools throughout Latin America. Liliana has great experience in the education field, but she stresses that the parents are the first and the main teachers in the ways of the faith. However, she also insists that we must also cooperate closely with the religious education offered by our schools and parishes. because they also play a key role in the formation of our children. So we can take it from an expert Liliana Perez Lonegro..mother of ten, teacher, author, and psychologist. Raise your children in the ways of faith by your example. Bring them to Mass.not an option.and cooperate closely with the religious education offered by your school and parish. A recipe for success. May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -3-

August 19 th, 2018 20 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME In this Sunday s Gospel, the conflict escalates in the Bread of Life Discourse. Confusion is mounting in the crowd. How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Their minds were thinking literally, not mystically. Jesus doesn t seem to help, however, and only drives His point home with more emphasis. Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Jesus would later institute the Eucharist at the Last Supper. There he would definitively establish the sacramental reality in which bread and wine become substantially His own Body and Blood. We celebrate this sacrament in the Mass. Perhaps we do not always understand what we receive. My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. What is the essence of food and drink? Food nourishes our bodies, providing essential calories for our survival. Water is used throughout the body to cushion joints, regulate body temperature, and protect sensitive tissues like the brain. When we receive the Eucharist, we receive the spiritual equivalent of these essential elements. Like water, the Eucharist strengthens the sanctifying grace moving through us. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. The Eucharist connects us intimately to Jesus and confirms our union with Him. That is why we abstain from the Eucharist while in a state of mortal sin. It would be a contradiction and deep disrespect to these words of Jesus. To receive the Body and Blood of Jesus is not a right but a gift we receive with deep humility. As we receive the Bread of Life, grace strengthens our love, separates us from sin even wiping away venial sins unifies us with the universal Church, and helps commit us to humble service. Together we are nourished for our mission in the world! PARISH OFFERING The collection for last week, Sunday, August 12 th, 2018 was $9,294. Your kindhearted generosity to Holy Spirit Church is very much appreciated. In today s second reading, St. Paul reminds us that, blessed by the Lord, the good steward should give thanks to God the Father always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Banns of marriage First Time: Ashley Dempsey and Thomas Burke -8
