6 Third Sunday of Lent March 23, 2014 Treasures From Our Tradition Especially during the Lent and Easter seasons, we are very conscious of the communal nature of baptism. We stand witness to the baptism of adults at the Easter Vigil in many parishes, and countless parishes celebrate festive baptisms for infants. The rule for celebrating baptism is that it be only once a day in any parish church, a sign of the Church s desire that baptism be the work of the gathered community. Private baptism is therefore a misnomer, since all baptisms, even emergency baptisms for infants in danger of death, are a public act of entrance in to the Body of Christ, the Church. In an emergency, and providing the parents desire it, anyone can baptize by pouring water and saying, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. But then afterward the Church is encouraged to supply what is missing: the gathered assembly to proclaim and hear God s word, the promises, the naming, the anointings, the clothing with a white garment, the candle, the Lord s Prayer, and the solemn blessing of the parents at the altar. Wonderfully, this ritual often provides the opportunity for great rejoicing at the recovery of an infant who had been in danger. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. He meets a Samaritan woman, who expects him to treat her like dirt. But surprise! He talks to her like a fellow human being, treats her with respect and interest. And what happens? Why, pretty soon the whole town turns out to hear him. Centuries earlier, the Israelites, wandering in the desert, were thirsty. They had no water. All they had was an attitude problem. They growled at Moses, Why did you ever make us leave Egypt? But surprise! God gave them water from the rock. No questions asked. All the peoples of Earth are travelers on this planet together, all thirsting, all harboring our own fearful expectations of each other. But God, as a loving parent, treats us all with generous care and compassion. We are one family. We could surprise each other. We could remember we are one. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

St. Bede Church Ingleside, IL 7 Bridge Club: Do you play Bridge? Would you like to learn? Cancelled due to lack of interest Families and the Gospel Third Sunday of Lent Our children are like the Samaritan woman in today s gospel. They need more than material things. They need the living water only the adults can give. It will teach them how to make decisions, take responsibility, respect themselves and others and live their commitments. With this living water they will never thirst. by Bud Ozar

All are invited and welcome to join us for Mass at 8:15 AM, Monday through Saturday. You may wish to invite a friend or neighbor as Lent is an especially good time to begin a regular routine to expand both our personal prayer time and when we join with our community.!!!!!!! NO CONCEALED GUNS!!!!!!! The No Concealed Guns signs have been placed on the doors of the Church, School and Rectory and Knights House. Please note that we are required to post these signs if we do not want firearms on our campus. In light of the presence of children in the school and our belief that violence should not be a part of the lives we live as Catholics, all are asked to refrain from carrying any sort of weapon. Violators who are noticed will be reported to the police. In regard to having Mass accessible for the handicapped at St. Bede As mentioned in last week s bulletin we are considering the possibility of moving one of our Sunday Masses into the gym where we celebrate our annual Anointing of the Sick Mass. The expense involved would be substantially less than the costs involved in remodeling the Church to make it handicapped accessible. Before a final decision will be made, parishioners will be asked to give their opinions on this proposal. At this time, one consideration is to begin a trial period during which the 11AM Mass would be celebrated in the gym once a month for a specific period of time, perhaps 6 months or so. Another suggestion is to rotate the schedule to the gym one month at 7AM, the next month at 9AM, etc. Please contact the parish office by phone or letter or e-mail Fred at fkonopasek@stbedechurch.com to let us know your thoughts! Thank you. God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. (Romans 5:1-2, 5-8)

Many of our parishioners received a mailing from Cardinal George. He asks that you make a pledge to the 2014 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please respond generously. This year, the theme of the Appeal is: You are the temple of God. We are living temples of God and carry His true presence into the world. He calls us to share our gifts with others. As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our parish, of our Archdiocese and of the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. As you review the mailing from Cardinal George, please note the ministries and services funded by the Appeal, including the ones that directly support the work of our parish. Then, please give generously. Note that when our parish reaches its goal of $34,000.00 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish.
