WISDOM FOR MODERN TIMES St. Thomas Aquinas is one of the brightest lights in the whole history of the Church. While he studied and taught Philosophy and Theology almost 800 years ago, his influence is still felt today. How can the writings of Aquinas help us navigate life in modern times? That will be Fr. Pat Rugen s topic when he speaks here on Monday, July 21 at 7:00pm in the Parish Center Conference Room. Father Rugen is a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, a pastor, and a teacher of Philosophy in our seminary. Please join us. MASS AT THE GAZEBO Mass will be offered on Saturday, July 26 at 6:00pm at the Lake Bluff gazebo. Please remember to bring lawn chairs or a blanket to spread on the ground. This has become a wonderful summertime tradition; it is a great sight to see all the people gathered on the lawn to celebrate the Eucharist. Fr Brendan Guilfoil will be the celebrant this year. Please join us! OUR CHURCH PORCH In the 1940s a porch with a balustrade was built in front of our church. The balustrade is limestone and the porch itself is concrete. This past winter, due to the extremely cold temperatures, the frozen ground caused the porch to heave. The heaving was so pronounced that it created difficulties in opening the church doors. After consultation with engineers, a general contractor, an architect, and the Archdiocese of Chicago, it seems wise to now remove the concrete, repair the limestone, and rebuild the porch. This renovation will help water drain from the porch and prevent the heaving that caused us problems this winter. We also plan on installing radiant heat beneath the porch surface and steps. Radiant heat will melt snow and ice, thus reducing the use of salt (which damages the carpet inside the church), and increasing safety for those entering and exiting the church. The estimated cost of this project is around $300,000. I realize it is a large undertaking but believe we will enjoy the benefits for decades. I ll share more about this next week. SUMMER MISSION APPEAL The Summer Mission Appeal will be the weekend of August 2nd and 3rd. The Mission Appeal will assist the foreign missions through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. AWAY FROM MY DESK I will be attending a Catholic conference in California from July 22-26. If you need the assistance of a priest in my absence, please contact Father Brendan Guilfoil or Father Ron Stake at 847.234.0205. In our Lord, Father Mike McGovern mmcgovern94@gmail.com Pastor s Notes

Hello! My name is Diane Kennedy and I am excited to be here at St. Mary's as an addition to the Youth Ministry staff! I moved to Chicagoland from the West Coast a year ago to volunteer as a resident assistant in a maternity home. Despite this past winter's cold, I decided to stay in Chicago, and was blessed to find this position. I look forward to returning to youth ministry after my year in the maternity home! Previous to moving to Illinois, I served with Reach Youth Ministry in Helena, Montana on a traveling retreat team. I'm enthused to be joining Alli in serving the youth of St. Mary's, and I look forward to meeting all of you! I'd like to thank Fr. Mike and the parish staff who have welcomed me and helped as I transition into this position, as well as all of you for welcoming me into your community! Clement of Alexandria and Origen Christological Controversies Augustine John of Damascus and Final Summary Charles Craigmile, who led our Summer program last year with great reviews, is back to present eight classes on The Fathers of the Church who provided the foundation for the Catholic Faith. The Fathers worked in a culture that resembles very much the trajectory of our own today. See how they brought Jesus Christ to the world and obtain spiritual and theological resources on how we too can evangelize our contemporary world. Charles has been a leader of RCIA and Adult Education programs throughout Chicago, is the former President and CEO of Forseva, LLC, a Chicago based technology company and has an MBA from Northwestern, an MA in philosophy from Depaul University, and a BA in philosophy from The University of St. Thomas, with minors in Latin and Greek. We will be reading Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States by Sister Helen Prejean. After being asked to become a pen pal with death-row inmate Patrick Sonnier, Sister Helen Prejean is confronted with the reality and complexity of the death penalty. This true account from Prejean addresses one of the greatest life issues in our country. Please read the book and come ready for some good discussion! If you d like more information, please contact Alli Harvey at aharvey@churchofstmary.org Opus Dei Evenings of Recollection for Men are presented monthly by the Prelature of Opus Dei at St. Mary s Church. Sacramental Confession is available during the Recollection. Your Unique Vocation "The Spirit too helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought." During 4th quarter, the 8th grade students covered the subject of World War II, with a focus on the Holocaust. To supplement the curriculum covered in social studies class, the students visited the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie and were visited by Mr. Frank Waldeck, (Church of St. Mary Parishioner and former School of St. Mary Parent) who served during WWII. At the museum, students were given the chance to explore the causes and effects of the Holocaust by viewing artifacts, reading testimonies, and having a question and answer session with a Holocaust survivor. Just before the 8th graders graduated, Mr. Waldeck came to the School of St. Mary and gave a presentation about his experiences as a soldier who fought in World War II. The students were able to ask questions and found the discussion to be very interesting. The topics made their study of World War II much more meaningful.
