PUSEY HOUSE OXFORD High Mass 22 nd Sunday after Trinity Remembrance Sunday

Music of the Mass Mass in the Dorian Mode Herbert Howells (1892-1983) I will lift up mine eyes Herbert Howells (1892-1983) For the fallen Douglas Guest (1916-1996) O salutaris hostia Edward Elgar (1857-1934) Introit - Sung by the Choir ACT OF REMEMBRANCE I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh thy help. My help cometh even from the Lord; who made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved; and he that keepeth thee will not sleep. Behold, he that keepeth Israel; shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord himself is thy keeper; the Lord is thy defence upon thy right hand; So that the sun shall not burn thee by day; neither the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil; yea, it is even he that shall keep they soul. The Lord shall preserve they going out, and thy coming in; from this time forth from evermore. Words: Psalm 121, vv 1-4 Music: Herbert Howells (1892-1983) Preface and Bidding The Exhortation Sung by the Choir They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. Words: Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) Music: Douglas Guest (1916-1996) The Last Post Two Minutes Silence Reveille The Priest leads the congregation in a prayer to which all respond: Amen.

National Anthem God save our gracious Queen Long live our noble Queen God save The Queen! Send her victorious Happy and glorious Long to reign over us God save The Queen! Thy choicest gifts in store, On her be pleased to pour; Long may she reign: May she defend our laws, And ever give us cause, To sing with heart and voice, God save the Queen! The National Anthem is followed immediately by the Entrance Hymn during which the Altar is venerated and censed. Entrance Hymn - Sung by O God our help in ages past Hymnal 417 St Anne THE ORDER OF MASS In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Lord have mercy upon us, and write all these Thy laws in our hearts, we beseech Thee. Kyrie Eleison - Sung by the Choir Κyrie Eleison Christe Eleison Kyrie Eleison Lord, have mercy Christ, have mercy Lord, have mercy Gloria in Excelsis - Sung by

Collect for the First Sunday after Trinity s

Collect for the Twenty-Second Sunday After Trinity Lord, we beseech the to keep thy household the Church in continual godliness; that through thy protection it may be free from all adversities, and devoutly given to serve thee in good works, to the glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Old Testament Lesson Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him; and he cried, Cause every man to go out from me. And there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren. And he wept aloud: and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard. And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence. And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life. For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest. And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. Genesis 45 v. 1-7 Gradual Psalm Can. BEHOLD, how good and joyful a thing it is : brethren, to dwell together in uni-ty! Full It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down unto the beard :

even unto Aaron's beard, and went down to the skirts of his clothing. Can. Like as the dew of Hermon : which fell upon the hill of Sion. Full For there the Lord promised his blessing : and life for evermore. Ps. 133 New Testament Lesson I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace. For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; that ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1 v. 3-11

Gradual Behold, how good and joyful a thing it is: brethren, to dwell together in unity. It is like the precious ointment upon the head: that ran down unto the beard, even unto Aaron s beard. Gospel Acclamation Sung once by cantor, then repeated tutti He healeth those who are broken in heart: and bindeth up their-wounds.

The Gospel The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew: Glory be to thee, O Lord. Peter said unto Jesus, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses. Matthew 18 v. 21-end

Sermon Doing the Impossible The Principal Nicene Creed - Sung by

Intercessions The Sub-deacon leads the congregation in the intercessions for the Church and the world. The response to each bidding is Hear our prayer. Confession The Celebrant invites the people to confess their sins, kneeling: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Celebrant pronounces the Absolution to which all respond: Amen. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. 1. Who would true valour see, Let him come hither; One here will constant be, Come wind, come weather. There s no discouragement Shall make him once relent His first avowed intent To be a pilgrim. 2. Whoso beset him round With dismal stories Do but themselves confound; His strength the more is. No lion can him fright, He ll with a giant fight, But he will have a right To be a pilgrim. 3. Hobgoblin nor foul fiend Can daunt his spirit, He knows he at the end Shall life inherit. Then fancies fly away, He ll fear not what men say, He ll labour night and day To be a pilgrim. Words: The Pilgrim s Progress (John Bunyan) Music: MONKS GATE English Folk Song arr. RVW

The readings from the Bible, seasonal pieces sung by the choir, and some wonderful Advent carols and hymns, will help us to appreciate the riches of the season.
