Silver Highlights 25th Anniversary Celebration Church of the Open Door, Maple Grove I am God s image bearer. Arise, come to your God! Sing Him your songs of rejoicing. Cry out with joy to the Lord all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before Him singing for joy. Give glory to the Father Almighty, to His Son, Jesus Christ, the Lord, to the Spirit who dwells in our hearts. Arise, come to your God! Sing Him your songs of rejoicing. Prayer for the Gift of the Holy Spirit Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and kindle in us the fire of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit and we shall be created, and You shall renew the face of the earth. O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by that same Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy Your consolations, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Do you understand what you are reading? Philip asked. How can I, (the eunuch) said, unless someone explains it to me? So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. Tell me please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else? Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. Acts 8:30b-31, 34-35 What if your purpose is to be a blessing? What if your purpose is to be a light? What if your purpose is to be an agent for the kingdom of God? We are called to a life in Christian community. We are called to give it away. We are silver in more than one way. Ask the 20 and 30 year olds (to attend a UEC weekend). I, for one, would welcome the return of waiting lists. From the Rollo, Rev. Trace James, UEC #109 Faith Presbyterian, Mtka Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God s word is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; If we endure, we will also reign with him. 2 Timothy 2:8-11 We are called to bring Christ to all areas of our life. The refiner watches constantly; the silver is done only when it reflects his image. May I be the image bearer. We sharpen ourselves, like iron, with other Christians. Where did you first see God? How much refining has occurred since then? It is because of God s grace and love that we aren t left in the fire too long. From the Communion Message, Rev. Janice Knight, UEC #202 Church of the Open Door, Mpl Grv Other Silver Moments Bible Enthronement. Historic Visions: How weekends have changed since 1981. Council s Quarters Six Cursillistas submitted a total of 37 designs in last year s contest for a new UEC logo. There were many good designs, and most of them shared important elements. The collection was a rich blessing that made our final selection a challenge. The winner is a rainbow cross for use alone or, as shown on the cover and in the return address of this newsletter, with a choice of phrases. We thank Edy Barber, Lyle Jensen, Glen Karlgaard, Kirsten Miller, Barb Paul and Kathy Walker for sharing their creative talents with the Community. Logo Contest Four voting Council members will complete their three-year terms this spring. We seek nominations of 4 th Day persons who can begin serving in September. Openings are in: Leadership Development (2 positions) Liaison Coordinator (1 position) Communications/Palanca Press Editor (1 position) One support (non-voting) position, Historian, is also open. If you have an interest in maintaining the physical records of our 25 years of ministry, please let us know. You may contact any Council member [see phone numbers on the next page, or email (last name)@unidosencristo.com] if you have questions about various roles or to learn specific duties. We re Open for Council Nominations Inspiration for Meditation Guidance is a word that can remind us how to be in relationship with God. According to an internet circular, G is for God, followed by u and i ; God, you and I dance. The analogy was supported in several ways: When dancing, two bodies flow as one with the music If both dancers try to lead, nothing feels right; one must be willing to surrender When one dancer is allowed to lead, gentle clues are given and received Grace-filled relationships with God require: Willingness to let go and Surrender understanding that God s ways are higher than ours Attentiveness the ability to pay attention Receptivity the ability to favorably receive gentle clues Guidance is also a word that can remind us how to be in faithful relationship with each other. Add a simple comma God, you, and I dance and you take your relationship with God to the community. It is a dance that we perform or enjoy together. Where, in what part of our lives ~ at home, at work, in ministries at church and with UEC ~ is God asking for willingness and surrender? Are we paying attention? Are we receptive? Let s dance with God. Convenor s Corner We are in the midst of Lent, the period of 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter. (Sundays aren t counted; Christ arose on Sunday, making it more appropriate to celebrate His resurrection for our salvation on Sundays than to fast and reflect upon our sins.) Lent originated in the very early days of the church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. Forty days is a traditional number of discipline, devotion, and preparation in the Bible. In the days of Noah, God made it rain for forty days and nights; the Jews wandered forty years traveling to the Promise Land. Jonah, in his prophecy of judgment, gave the city of Nineveh forty days to repent. Most importantly, prior to undertaking his ministry, Jesus retreated into the wilderness to pray and fast for forty days to prepare for His ministry. It is fitting that we imitate our Lord with this forty day period of self-examination. Further, that we should empty ourselves of false pride so that we can focus on our need for God s grace and our individual relationship with God. Then we can appreciate that God s grace is an unmerited gift. This time of preparation is to celebrate God s marvelous redemption at Easter, and the resurrected life that we live, and hope for, as Christians. In the past, Lent was also marked by fasting of both food and festivities. (Lent means fast in some languages, spring in others.) Today, some remember this tradition by giving up something they particularly enjoy, like chocolate or desserts, for the period of Lent. Regardless of whatever else you deny yourself, it is the time to give up our old self-centered ways. As you observe this Lenten period, I pray that you recall the Stations of the Cross that led to Jesus demonstration of His Calvary love for you and His glorious resurrection on Easter morning.
