The members of the expedition spent the winter of 1805 on the Pacific Coast. The captains made the decision to follow the south fork of the Missouri. They built a fort and spent the winter preparing for the journey west. Lewis was threatened by a bear, a mountain lion, and three bull bison in one afternoon. The expedition had a serious and nearly deadly encounter with the Teton Sioux. The Snake and the Columbia s meet here. The Missouri splits into three branches. The captains named the rivers after important American leaders. They met the Shoshone and traded for horses. On the way east, the expedition split into two groups to explore dif ferent routes. Sacagawea and her husband are hired to be guides and interpreters. The expedition reunites for the return trip down the Missouri.
