Bishop Duca This past Friday, Bishop Michael Duca was installed as the sixth bishop of the Diocese of Baton Rouge. When I was a seminarian, Bishop Duca gave a formation seminar at Notre Dame Seminary. Here are a few insights from those talks that were helpful to me. Bishop Duca began the seminar with the theme of mission. Mission isn t just about our actions in the distant future. Mission is our inspiration, an outward energy in response to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Regarding his own mission, Bishop said, My idea of priesthood was serving in a few parishes for all my days. Instead, he served as vocation director, went to study canon law, went back to seminary something he said never wanted to do, and finally he was asked to be bishop. He kept on saying, My next assignment will be in the parish. Finally he got the point and said, Wherever you call me, Lord, I will go. The Lord s mission for us could be to go at a faster or slower pace than we re comfortable with. Bishop told a story about a man who took his mother to the grocery store. This man was frustrated that she walked slower than a snail. He told his mother, Let me go and get all the things in two minutes so we can check out. But she wanted to take her time, looking at each item. The Bishop told us, You have to learn the value of walking slowly. Bishop Duca used a story to demonstrate the danger of temptation. As a priest, he was living in an old house when a squirrel invaded the attic. Anytime he would plug the hole, the squirrel found a way back in. He realized that while he was thinking about the squirrel only 30 minutes a day, the squirrel was thinking about the attic 24/7. Applying this to our spiritual lives, the more we think about temptation, the greater the chance the sin will get in our lives. Bishop Duca encouraged us seminarians to be balanced. He said, Don t take yourself too seriously, and you must take yourself absolutely seriously. Young priests are sometimes tempted to compete with Jesus to be Savior of the parish. If a priest does great things in the parish, he must remember that it s God s work. Bishop gave an example of what it means to take yourself lightly. A little kid walked up to him one day after Mass and said, You re fat! Bishop responded, You re right! Even though he takes himself lightly, a priest must take himself absolutely seriously because he ministers the sacramental presence of Christ. Maintaining these opposite attitudes mirrors our faith that seems to hold two contraries together: God is three and one. In the same way a priest must take himself seriously... and not do so at the same time. I look forward to meeting Bishop Duca and inviting him to celebrate Mass in our cluster parishes! Peace, Fr.
