The Catholic Community of St. Barnabas September 2, 2018 Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time PARISH MISSION The family of St. Barnabas Parish celebrates the Eucharist, welcomes and serves all, shares talents, fosters learning, and initiates others into the life of Christ. 10134 South Longwood, Chicago, IL 60643 www.stbarnabasparish.org, 773-779-1166

7 S Perspective Why is the parish undertaking such a project? Life would be simpler just to remain the same. The buildings have been able to serve the community for the last half century- why change, why update? I am sure any home owner knows when it is time to invest, downsize, or just let the new owners worry about it. In some sense, we are both the old owners and new owners of this parish community. The elders tell stories of going out on one Sunday to get pledges to build the "new church" in 1968. Only one Sunday!!! Do you believe it? Someone had the vision and determination to make a dream into reality. Our current project has taken years of dreaming and envisioning to get to this point. The reason we are undertaking this project is the same reason the last generation sponsored the building of the Church. We desire St. Barnabas to be part of the Beverly community and an anchor of Catholicism both in worship and education. We want our children to become the leaders of the next generation. I do marvel at the accomplishments of so many of our young parishioners. The sacrifices you make for your kids know no bounds. You want the best for them and are willing to do anything for them. You send them to the best high schools and universities, no questions asked. How many of your kids have been to Europe to study abroad? Education is the foundation to this success. We as a parish recognize the need to keep pace. The creation of this new and innovative learning space is critical to remain a leader in Catholic education. However, none of this makes any sense unless we remain a faith based community. None of this makes any sense or is worth a penny if it is only about being number one. We live in God's world. We have been given so many gifts and much is expected of us. Do we accept both the invitation and the responsibility of being the best servants of God that we can be? When I stand in the back of church I see so many great families; young and old. When I stand in the back of church and see the elders I marvel at their faith, sometimes knowing their journey and others just sensing their own individual journey. So many people do great acts of kindness known only to a few and to their God. So many people carry a cross known only to a few and their God. As we begin a new school year, accept the challenge and invitation of being a good servant. Be an example to your children. Teach them what is truly important in your life. They know already. Curve back around to being part of our Sunday community. Find and claim your favorite pew. Some have had theirs for generations. Become a pillar of this community. The Imagine Campaign Some FAQs This is the first of an occasional series of articles where the Campaign Leadership Team and parish staff address questions about the Campaign. Q: What exactly are we getting with the addition to the school? It looks nice but I ve heard that it is nothing but offices and an Art Room. That isn t a good use of the money. A: The addition to the school will have the same number of offices as today in the legacy building. The new building will allow Art, Music and Foreign Language to have dedicated classrooms instead of a program on a cart. The Foreign Language classroom will be in the addition. The Library/Computer Lab will be moved to the new building s Media Center. The school now has no science lab but there will be a modern one called the Innovations Center in the new building. As a result of the addition there will be 24 classrooms available for Grades 1-8, three per grade. This will give St. Barnabas School a great deal of flexibility. If enrollment grows, Barnabas will have the capacity. If it doesn t, then the average class size may get smaller. The addition will also have a Nurse s Office, a secure entrance and an elevator to provide access to the entire school for those who can t use the stairs. Q: I don t have school age children so why should I support the Campaign? A: Many families who have pledged don t have school age children. A strong school makes for a stronger parish. An excellent Catholic school option is appealing for newcomers to the neighborhood. All the on-line real estate B: websites have information about the schools in Beverly, and some have comments and ratings about St. Barnabas School. A better school helps all of our property values. Q: If 1,000 families haven t pledged, does that mean they don t support the Campaign? A: No. We believe that means they haven t made a decision. Most of the families in the Parish haven t been solicited for a pledge in almost two years. Q: Why is that? A: The Leadership Team decided that fund-raising should be based on updated cost estimates and Newman B: Architecture s work on the design. We now have detailed drawings that will be part of our new Campaign pitch book and video. Q: Lately I ve read that if 1,000 families each pledge $1,200 we can raise the remaining $1.2 million to reach the Campaign s $5 million goal. Two years ago I received a letter asking for a lot more than $1,200 and I ve pledged a lot higher amount. Why are you only asking for $1,200 pledges now? A: The ask amounts for the first phase of Campaign fundraising have been a source of confusion. They were B: determined by the Campaign consultant at the time and based on a number of factors, including a family s history of financial support for the parish. If your family has been financially generous to St. Barnabas you probably received a higher ask than $1,200. And many families have supported the Campaign which is why Barnabas has achieved 78% of the Campaign goal. Thank you for your generosity! The Leadership Team wants to increase the number of families pledging to the Campaign. $1.2 million is a big number to raise but if more families participate it will be easier to achieve. Our 1,000 families at $1,200 each is our way to make the goal more achievable. With pledges payable over three years, that works out to $400 per year. We hope families who haven t pledged and who don t have the financial means for a larger contribution will think that level is affordable.

THANK YOU A very big thank you to the St. Barnabas Bridge League for their generous donation to the parish. They enjoyed another season of great fellowship and card playing. Human Concerns ST. Spiritual Life CHOIR JOIN THE ST. BARNABAS ADULT CHOIR 2018-19 SEASON Music is an exciting and fulfilling ministry with the power to express what words cannot. Music touches the soul, heals the heart and enhances our prayer. It is a wonderful way to become involved in our parish as we give back to God the talents and gifts God has bestowed upon us. St. Barnabas parish is looking to continue developing a full, vibrant and energetic choir including both the young and the old gathered as one in prayer as we lead the song of the assembly at the 10:00 a.m. Sunday liturgies from September through May. We rehearse once a week on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 9:00 p.m.in the church. Anyone from high school age and up who loves to sing is invited and encouraged to join us. No experience is necessary! We are also seeking experienced instrumentalists who would be willing to share their gifts and talents with the faith community of St. Barnabas. Please consider joining us for a spiritually and musically uplifting experience! Rehearsals will begin on Wednesday, September 5th at 7:00 p.m. in church. Feel free to bring a friend. If you have any questions, please contact Kitty Ryan at 773-779-1166 ext 226 or by e-mail at ktryan@stbarnabasparish.org May the music of our days, Lord, be a song in praise of You! We would like to continue expanding our full, vibrant and energetic children s choir at St. Barnabas to further enhance our liturgies. Any student, in grades 3-8 in Fall of 2018, is invited to join the St. Barnabas Children s Choir. Rehearsals will be held every Wednesday from 3:00 4:30 p.m. in the church beginning on Wednesday, September 5, 2018. The Children s Choir will lead the music at various liturgies from September through May. A detailed schedule will be distributed at a later date. Anyone who loves to sing is encouraged to join us in this fun, exciting and fulfilling ministry.
