First Presbyterian Church For Christ in the Heart of Charlotte Founded in 1821 Order of Worship Seventh Sunday after Pentecost July 8, 2018 11 a.m. You are invited to use the time before the service to prepare your heart and mind for worship. In consideration of others, please silence your cell phones. Preparation Prelude We Pray Now to the Holy Spirit Dietrich Buxtehude Words of Welcome *Call to Worship We come from mountaintops and valleys And from busy highways and quiet streets. We come with joys and concerns And with expectations and excuses. We come seeking Christ to know him better and to follow his way. Come, let us worship the Lord. The Reverend Katelyn Gordon Cooke Adoration *Hymn No. 65 Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah cwm rhondda

Large-print hymnals and Bibles are available. Please let an usher know if you would like one. We believe that God put the wiggle in children, and all are welcome in worship regardless of their ability to sit still. If you d like to step out of the sanctuary with your child, please feel free to visit the chapel (to the right of the sanctuary) where the service is streaming. Call to Confession Prayer of Confession Confession The Reverend Chuck Williamson Holy God, you call us to come up the mountain to see you, And we confess that we grumble about how our feet hurt and how hard it is to follow you. We wish you would make it easier for us. You reveal yourself to us in beautiful and mysterious ways on the mountaintop, And we confess that we don t know how to respond. We stand in awe of your presence and then we doubt our experience. We wish you would always be so obvious in your communication with us. You send us down the mountain to live as changed people, And we confess that we struggle to integrate the truths that you have shown us into our daily lives. We revel in the profundity of the mountaintop experience, and we forget that you speak to us in the ordinary, routine moments of our days. By your Spirit, help us to be attentive and responsive to your word to us in all circumstances of our lives. In silent prayer, let us confess to God the things we choose not to speak aloud. Assurance of Pardon Friends, believe the good news. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Stokes is the son of Steven and Megan Bimbo. Children who have completed kindergarten through 2nd grade are invited to participate in the mindful motion session in P-206. They will return to the sanctuary during the last hymn. The 11 a.m. service is televised over WSOC-TV, Channel 9 this morning and streamed live at www.firstpres-charlotte.org. *Response (Hymn No. 581) gloria patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. Sacrament of Baptism Hymn No. 188 Sacrament of Baptism Stokes Lane Bimbo jesus loves me Jesus loves me! This I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong. They are weak but he is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so. *Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Children in kindergarten through 2nd grade are invited to mindful motion in P206. Older children are encouraged to stay in worship. Younger children may go to the nursery. *Hymn No. 65 1 Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but thou art mighty. Hold me with thy powerful hand. Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more; feed me till I want no more. Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah 2 Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing stream doth flow. Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Strong deliverer, strong deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield; be thou still my strength and shield. 3 When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside. Death of death, and hell s destruction, land me safe on Canaan s side. Songs of praises, songs of praises I will ever give to thee; I will ever give to thee. *Hymn No. 757 1 Today we all are called to be disciples of the Lord, to help to set the captive free, make plowshare out of sword, to feed the hungry, quench their thirst, make love and peace our fast, to serve the poor and homeless first, our ease and comfort last. 2 God made the world and at its birth ordained our human race to live as stewards of the earth, responding to God s grace. But we are vain and sadly proud; we sow not peace but strife. Our discord spreads a deadly cloud that threatens all of life. Today We Are All Called to Be Disciples 3 Pray justice may come rolling down as in a mighty stream, with righteousness in field and town to cleanse us and redeem. For God is longing to restore an earth where conflicts cease, a world that was created for a harmony of peace. 4 May we in service to our God act out the living word, and walk the road the saints have trod till all have seen and heard. As stewards of the earth may we give thanks in one accord to God who calls us all to be disciples of the Lord. *Hymn No. 295 Go to the World! 1 Go to the world! Go into all the earth. Go preach the cross where Christ renews life s worth, baptizing as the sign of our rebirth. 2 Go to the world! Go into every place. Go live the word of God s redeeming grace. Go seek God s presence in each time and space. 3 Go to the world! Go struggle, bless, and pray; the nights of tears give way to joyous day. As servant church, you follow Christ s own way. 4 Go to the world! Go as the ones I send, for I am with you till the age shall end, when all the hosts of glory cry Amen!
