Vacation Bible School Our 2017 Vacation Bible School is now a happy memory. We would like to thank all the parents of the 60 children who attended for a week full of fun and surprises (most great, some, not so much, like a tornado and flash flood warning!) But we survived! Not only that but the children collected $70 for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Also a special thanks to all of you who participated in any way as leaders, helpers, contributors and prayer partners. We give thanks to God for all of you. See you next year! Pathways Pathways is the program sponsored by our diocese to develop parish leaders in ministry. Perhaps you have been reading about this program in the bulletins or picked up a brochure, but you're still not sure. Still want to really know what its like? Then join some of your fellow parish family members at an informal presentation about Pathways on Sunday, August 13 after the 10:30 a.m. Mass. One of our parishioners who is a past Pathways participant, will tell you exactly what its like to be a part of this energizing process and how it has impacted his life. We will also share in a continental breakfast. Pathways is being offered in Uniontown this year at St. Mary's so take advantage of this rare opportunity! For further information contact the parish office.
REFLECTION 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time "Hear then the parable of the sower." With his analogy of the sower and the seed, Jesus gives us four images to help us gauge the depth of our spiritual maturity. What kind of "soil" does our faith exist in? Are we fruitful Christians? Does our seed yield as much as it could? The first image is of the seed that fell on the path. This describes those who hear about Christianity "without understanding it." Nothing can grow, nothing can blossom at this level. We should ask ourselves if we have taken the time to be sure we understand the faith we practice. Are we stuck at a superficial level, allowing stereotypes, popular opinion, or media distortions to "steal away" the richness of the Catholic faith? Perhaps we have been properly educated in the teachings of the faith, but our commitment has been fickle. Are we the seed on the rocky ground, that "has no root and lasts only for a time"? Have we experienced difficulties in the practice of our faith that have led us to become indifferent? Have we found it just too troublesome to bring our faith into our everyday lives? Or have we heard the word, but allowed it to be choked by "worldly anxiety and the lure of riches"? Do we appreciate Christianity but fail to make the sacrifices that it requires? Are we more interested in a comfortable life than anything else? Many of us have sampled these stages at different times. But ultimately, our goal as Christians is to be "the seed sown on rich soil." We are called to be open to hearing the word, to seek to understand it, and to allow it to take firm root in our hearts. When we do this, the seed of our own faith can produce a rich harvest for the world. Sanctuary Candle In acknowledging the Real Presence of Christ, the Tabernacle Candle will burn in loving memory of Mary Jane Fitzmaurice requested by Rita Rae
Our Lady of the Assumption Legacy Society Bishop Edward C. Malesic will celebrate Mass and host a luncheon for members of the Our Lady of the Assumption Legacy Society Aug. 10 at noon at the Bishop Connare Center. James Monteverde, founder of The Monteverde Group, a firm providing service in estate planning and financial counseling, will be the guest speaker. This special society provides an opportunity for benefactors to make their philanthropy a perpetual legacy for themselves and an example for their families to follow. It also creates a means of support to make our parishes and ministries stronger, sustainable and better equipped to spread the Gospel and the love of Jesus Christ for generations to come. If you have provided for or are thinking of providing for your parish, school, Catholic Charities or the diocese in your estate plan, you are invited to attend this event. Please register online at www.dioceseofgreensburg.org/olals or call Lori Saenz at 724-552-2588, by Aug. 3.
