Celebration of the Priesthood Dinner With excitement building for the 3 rd annual Celebration of the Priesthood dinner, we are encouraged by the support of parishes, sponsors and parishioners who have already confirmed their attendance at this special event. Parishes around the Archdiocese are coming together to show their gratitude for the priests who have made a difference in so many lives in their communities by purchasing tickets or a table, or by making a gift to the dinner, which raises critical funding for the Clergy Funds. The Clergy Funds is a trust established solely for the health and retirement of our priests who have devoted their lives ministering to us, God s flock. All are encouraged to attend the dinner, or pool together with others in their parish community and purchase a table. All gifts make a difference. Your generosity will help support the 683 active and senior priests who have faithfully served us over the years and for years to come. The dinner in Celebration of the Priesthood will take place on September 22 nd at 5: 30 pm at the Seaport Hotel, World Trade Center in Boston. Individual tickets can be purchased for $500 and a table can be purchased for $5,000. Dear friends- Some of you may know Fr. Burkhardt who retired some years ago and was living at St. Denis parish in Westwood. Many years ago he was assigned to St. Catherine s in Norwood, and since he came from Westwood, he came back home to take care of his sister after serving as pastor at St. Joseph s parish in Belmont. When he retired he called me and the other pastors in the area to say that he would be happy to help offer Mass in any parish where he might be needed. I m sure that many of you would have seen him from time to time at almost every parish in the area. I don t think he ever said no to any request in fact many of us felt that he was doing too much. He had recently agreed to fill in for a few Monday morning Masses here at St. Timothy s while Fr. Emerson was on vacation, so that I could have a day off. Unfortunately, some weeks ago he became ill and has had to deal with a number of health issues. He has been in and out of the hospital, rehab, and in respite care at Regina Cleri the home for retired priests in Boston. I did see him last week and he has made some improvements, but has a long way to go. His ability to help in parishes in the future is in doubt. I m sure that we all wish him well and hope he has a full recovery, but his change in health really reminds us of how thin is the ranks of priests. Fr. Emerson has truly been a godsend for me and for our parish, and in spite of being 80 he is a tremendous asset. Without his services we would have to change many of our schedules and activities. The next ten years will see major changes to parish life. Probably teams of priests will be formed to serve a number of parishes. Mass schedules will have to be modified so that one priest may be able to service two or more parishes. Change is difficult. As much as we talk about change, we do not feel its full impact until something we are familiar with is no longer there. Last spring we hosted a meeting of the parish councils in the area to talk about what we presently do and how we can plan for the future in this area. With Fr. Burkhardt s sudden illness, St. Denis had to cancel all daily Masses because there was no one to fill in on short notice. All of us will need to sacrifice some things in the future to try to stretch our resources a bit further. As these plans develop, I want to keep you in the loop as much as possible, so that we will not be unprepared or feel that we were not consulted as these challenges are met. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will give us wisdom and patience as we try to face the realities that loom before us. Fr. Culloty P.S. Monday, Aug. 15 is the feast of the Assumption. When holydays fall on Saturdays or Mondays, the obligation to attend Mass is lifted, but we will have our usual Mass at 9am.
