TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ AUGUST 30, 2015 St. Gregory the Great (540-604; feast day, September 3), a descendent of many Roman Senators who inherited his father s large estates in Sicily, was appointed Prefect (Mayor) of Rome at a young age, and was driven around the city in a chariot drawn by four white horses. The times were very troubled, since the Western Roman Empire was already shredded and under constant pressure from barbarian incursions, and was ruled, with great difficulty, from distant Constantinople. Gregory read extensively from St. Ambrose and St. Augustine. He also joined the Benedictines, founding seven monasteries, one of which was his family s former palace. After three contented years as Abbot of the Roman monastery, Gregory was asked to become one of Pope Benedict I s deacons, in which capacity he worked energetically to care for the poor and for victims of a plague that devastated Rome. Then he was dispatched to Constantinople as the Pope s ambassador for seven years, entrusted with a mission to obtain Byzantine military support against the barbarians, a hope that proved to be futile. (He returned with the head of St. Luke and an arm of St. Andrew, but no troops.) Eventually he was elected Pope, and worked at the challenging position with greatly effective energy. He also wrote extensively, including his Moralia and his Pastoral Rule, among the works that have caused him to be honored as one of the four great Fathers of the Western Church. He called himself the Servant of the Servants of God, coining a title that is still given to the pope today. It was one he truly lived by. (continued above) FROM THE PASTOR S DESK At times, he had a tendency to violent anger. But it must be understood, in his defense, that he was almost continually under much severe pressure. And he always kept some of his aristocratic pride. (Once, when his family estate, at his request, sent him a horse that was not of very good quality, along with five asses, he wrote back to the foreman: You sent me a sorry nag and five good asses: the nag is too wretched to ride, and I simply can t ride the asses because they are asses. ) His writings were plain, but done in language of vigor and obvious conviction. Here is a sample: Because five thousand men were filled with five loaves, all men were in astonishment that the food should be multiplied in their teeth; every day the grains of seed that are sown are multiplied in a fullness of ears, and no man wonders. All men wondered to see water once turned into wine. Every day the earth s moisture being drawn into the roots of the vine, is turned by the grape into wine, and no man wonders. Full of wonder then are all the things that men never think to wonder at. St. Gregory, at immense personal sacrifice, did a great deal of unglamorous work in a vexed time. He is a fine model of manly commitment to the Church and one of the patrons of Church music. Not many Popes have earned the title Great but he certainly deserved it. Msgr. David Hubba PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH MISSIONARY APPEAL THIS WEEKEND A representative of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary will be with us at all Masses THIS weekend. The Sisters are a strictly missionary group with no institutions in the United States or Canada, so therefore rely almost exclusively on funds provided through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and the generosity of the people back home to support their sisters on mission. Your contributions are greatly appreciated. If you would like to see more about the Sisters, go to their website at mshr.org CHILDREN S BOOK DRIVE ENDS AUG. 31 New and gently-used books (preschool-grade 8) for St. Joseph School in Jersey City may be dropped off in the front foyer of our lower school building at 305 Elm Street, Oradell. SAINT JOSEPH ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION NEEDS YOUR HELP! We are looking for administrative help for our youth sports program which includes basketball, cheering and track. If you are interested in helping to keep the Saint Joseph Athletic Association one of the top parish-based sports programs in the County, please call Msgr. Hubba at 201-261-0148. CAMPUS MINISTRIES If you have a student going to college at Fairleigh Dickinson (Teaneck), Kean, Montclair State, New Jersey City Univ., NJIT, Ramapo College or Stevens Institute, pick up a handout on the College Campus Ministry in our church literature racks for Mass times and welcome events at those respective schools. 3

By providing pastoral care, catechesis, and funding for building renovations, your donations help to restore the Church and build the future in the region. Please give generously to the collection next week by using your parish envelope for this collection or by putting your donation in an envelope marked CCEE. (Checks should be made out to Saint Joseph Church. ) HELPING CHILDREN LEARN, SHARE, BUILD AND CREATE Recent Saint Joseph School graduates, Anuhea Moler and Angeleisa Russert have initiated a very interesting project for their Girl Scout Silver Award. You can help the girls make this innovative space a reality. A collection box has been placed at our lower school building (305 Elm St., Oradell). SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ GET YOUR TICKETS TODAY! CARNIVAL RIDES & 50/50 RAFFLE TICKETS FOR SALE AFTER ALL MASSES THIS WEEKEND Last year s 50/50 raffle prize was over $6,000! EAGLE SCOUT INTRODUCES ST. JOHN BOSCO TO ST. JOSEPH! Ryan with Facilities Director Tom Meli. With handmade picnic tables, a stone path, and plans for adding more flowers, the area will not only honor a special saint, it will also continue to be a living tribute to the memory of Carolyn Sonzogni (SJS class of 1979 and standout Duke basketball player who died in a car accident in 1989). Ryan Reilly, SJS Class of 2012 and member of Saint Joseph Boy Scout Troop #142, recently completed a very special Eagle Scout project. With the help of members of his troop, Ryan designed and built a wonderful garden/picnic area beside our lower school playground (and opposite our Parish Life Center) dedicated to St. John Bosco, patron saint of youth. Ryan, who will be a senior at Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey this year, arranged with his high school to have a beautiful statue of the saint donated as well. The plaque that will be mounted by the statue reads in part, Saint John Bosco desired four things for the young: a home that welcomes them, a school that prepares them for life, a church where they meet Jesus, and a playground where friends can meet and enjoy themselves. Ryan (third from left) with members of Troop #142. Thank you, Ryan, for enhancing our children s play area, bringing in a very special saint to bless and guide them, and preserving the precious memory of an SJS graduate. A BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL Saint Joseph School accepts students from 3 years old to Grade 8. Registration for September is now taking place. Call 201-261-2388. 6
