THE HIGHEST LAW From time to time, newspapers and magazines will offer, as an item of filler, various laws that are still on the books but seem silly to us in our day and age. In one California city, it is illegal to have two indoor bathtubs in one house. Clean water, a precious commodity when the law was written, is now readily available, so the law seems silly. But the human value of protecting and preserving precious resources is still around, evident in many conservation laws that seem sensible to us. So it is with the laws of religious tradition. What Jesus scorns today is others attitude toward ritual laws, an attitude that becomes nearly idolatrous when laws are observed for their own sake. Jesus teaches that observation of external ritual laws is of value only when they are emblems of our internal disposition toward the will of God. Our whole lives must follow the one ultimate law of God: to love God completely and to love neighbor entirely. Roman Catholicism is a tradition rich with customs, traditions, and even laws. As we continue to listen to the voice of Christ, we must always look into our own hearts and underneath our ritual practices to make sure that love of God and love of neighbor are what we prize above all. www.johnxxiiicc.org Saint John XXIII Catholic Community The Gospel According to Mark Mark now interrupts the story of the twelve going forth on mission to present the story of the death of John the Baptist. It begins with King Herod becoming aware of Jesus because they say, John the Baptist has been raised from the dead and thus feats of power are performed by him. Others say It is Elijah. And others, A prophet, like any of the prophets. Herod then says, Him whom I beheaded, John this one has been raised. Mark then tells of Herod and the death of John the Baptist. Herod had previously had John arrested and bound him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her. Herodias had wanted John killed but could not since, Herod was afraid of John, knowing him to be a man upright and holy, and protected him, and was very much at a loss when listening to him, yet listened to him with pleasure. On Herod s birthday he has a celebration in which he produces a banquet for his grandees, the chiliarchs, (military officers in other translations) and the foremost men of Galilee. Herodias takes the opportunity to have her daughter perform a dance that delights both Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you. Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom. She then asks her mother, What should I request? and her mother says, John who baptizes. The girl rushes to the king and says, I wish that you should at once give me the head of John the Baptist on a trencher (platter). Herod does not want to refuse her because of his oath and those together reclining at table. He orders the guard to bring him John s head. The guard beheads John and brought his head on a trencher, gave it to the girl and the girl gave it to her mother. John s disciples take the corpse and put it in a tomb. Matthew repeats the full story of the death of John the Baptist, which Mark did (Matthew 14:1-12). Luke, however, does not include the story of John s death. Both Mark and Matthew introduce John early in their Gospels when he appears in the desert, preaching of the coming of the kingdom. Luke includes the birth of John in his infancy narrative; it is here that he identifies John as the one who prepares for Jesus s coming. Luke has John s disciples ask Jesus if he is the one to come. Jesus answers, Go report to John the things you have seen and heard: the blind see again, the lame walk, lepers are being cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised and the poor are given the good tidings. And blissful is he who is not offended by me. Fr. Ark PLEASE be CAREFUL when walking in the parking lot, as certain areas are higher and/or lower than other areas. These areas are marked off with cemented curves, and/or rocked areas (islands). For your safety, PLEASE, walk around the rocked islands and any cemented curves. We care about your safety! Thank You! Attention Liturgical Ministers! Copies of the new Ministry Schedule are now available on the table in the foyer. If you are unable to fulfill your ministry, please call a replacement.
