Shalom Friends Welcome back to your Jewish home! Being part of a Jewish community is unlike membership in other groups. We all have many associations - work groups, school PTA, sports teams, neighborhoods and plenty of others. But Jewish community is different. There is a shared bond between Jewish families that is not present in other associations. We share history - Grandma s matzo ball soup, sitting peacefully (or not!) in services, gathering with extended family at simchas and shivas. This shared history is an unspoken bond. We also share values. We believe that learning - both from books and from life experience - is essential. We value patience and persistence in contrast to the modern pressure for intstant gratification. Judaism teaches us about the sacredness of time - that each moment, each day, each personal interaction is a gift to be treasured. As Jews we believe in the mitzvah of gmilut chasadim - doing acts of lovingkindness. We feel intuitively that our purpose is not to achieve solely for ourselves but to share our blessings with others. We value giving and receiving kindness. Elul 5777 / August 2017 These are shared connections and values that you won t find elsewhere - not on a sports fields, not in a PTA meeting, not in a neighborhood clubhouse. Those associations are useful, but they don t have the depth of a Jewish community. As a Jewish community, Neshamah s purpose is to create opportunites for spiritual growth. Our souls need nourishment just like our bodies. We do that together through our full calendar of joyful worship, relevant learning and meaningful mitzvah work. We also grow spiritually as individuals by exploring what Judaism means to us as busy but striving adults in the modern world. This year, I invite you to take part in something new. Have a Jewish adventure at our Dude Ranch Shabbat. Attend a Jewish Holiday Family Program, join us for Shabbat dinner after services or trying any Jewish experience of your choosing and see how it feels! I d be happy to discuss some options with you and am most interested to hear how it goes! I pray that this new year will be one of spiritual growth and deeper connections with each other and with our tradition. With gratitude and blessings, Rabbi Amy Rader Our Mission The Neshamah Institute is a soulful, independent, new synagogue without walls in South Palm Beach County. Our mission is to bring the personal connection and spirituality of authentic Judaism back to our community. Neshamah specializes in personalized Jewish education, uplifting Jewish celebrations, and meaningful, hands-on mitzvah work. Membership dues are not required as our programs are sustained solely by donations and fees for services. The Neshamah Institute is devoted to helping all Jews grow their neshamah, Jewish soul. 2
