Fifth Sunday of Lent The promise made by the LORD in the first reading is very bold. He says that all people shall know him, without having to be taught by others. The way people will know Him is through forgiveness of their sins. Remember, he is speaking to the Israelites: When they broke a commandment or law, they were isolated from the community. So the promise that God would place his law in their hearts meant they would be free to do God's will because they want to, not because they were feared punishment or rejection. Jesus says something similar in today's gospel. He tells the disciples that his crucifixion would draw everyone to him. Now, Jesus' death showed that he took on the punishment for sins in place of us, who deserve it. By dying on the cross, Jesus shows how much God loves us. By rising from the dead, he shows that we can rise from sin to a new life of faith and love. Getting back to the first reading, we experience that promise when we bring our sins to God. When we forgive people who have hurt us, we also help them to experience that love. We also help others to know God when we share or experience of being forgiven. The sacrament of Reconciliation gives us the assurance of God's forgiveness, as well as the experience. Along with the other sacraments, it helps us keep God's love in our hearts. Main Cluster Office Decision The following is a summary of my presentation last Thursday at the town hall meeting. First, I remind parishioners why we re considering a main office in the first place. Due to the priest shortage, we will go down to one priest in the future. I cannot do the work of two priests, so I need one office to cut down on my time on the road and bring the staff together to work as a team and give me needed support. Something has to change, or the stress of running around all day while feeling disconnected from my staff will wear me out. The three candidate sites for the main office are the rectory at Our Lady of Peace, the office at St Philip and the KC Hall. I evaluated these options based on four criteria: cost, location, space and accessibility. Based on comments I ve heard and results from the survey last August, the cost is more important for parishioners. Because the staff will be spending the most time with me in the office, space is more important for the staff. The estimated renovation cost for the KC Hall is the highest at $256,239. This location would also have additional, annual expenses for insurance and maintenance that could be between $15,000 and $20,000. Due to these higher costs, the KC Hall was eliminated from consideration. The estimated renovation costs for Our Lady of Peace ($113,422) and St Philip ($176,183) are lower. The more important difference is in the space and accessibility. Our Lady of Peace has 464 more square feet of usable office space than St Philip. St Philip is most lacking in readily accessible storage space (88 square feet). Even though the St Philip option includes an elevator system, there is still the chance that a visitor attempts the stairs and is unsuccessful. After considering these facts, I chose the Our Lady of Peace option over the St Philip option due to its bigger space and better accessibility. After hearing the concerns about travel distances from the extremes of the parish to Our Lady of Peace (Lemanville is 30 minutes away), I felt it was a good idea to keep the office open at St James with part time hours. (office hours to be determined) Parishioners are concerned that if the parish office closes, their church will close, too. In my research I discovered that of all the clusters in the diocese with 3 parishes, we are the only cluster with 3 offices. Two of these cluster have one office, and one cluster has two offices open. None of the parishes closed after their church office closed. Bottom line: a parish office has little to do with parish viability. What s going to keep your parish open is getting the next generation committed to their faith (coming to Mass) and supporting their parish. Getting parishioners more committed to their parish is a goal of mine. With a main office, I ll have better support to move on that goal! Peace, Fr. Collection for Metanoia House The Metanoia House is a refuge for young women who have been rescued from sex trafficking. The following was taken from the the metanoia.org website: Human trafficking is not just an issue in foreign countries. It s a real issue across America and, now, throughout our own State. According to national statistics, one of the busiest trafficking corridors stretches from Houston to New Orleans. The victims ultimately reach virtually every corner of Louisiana. The average age of a trafficking victim is 13.These children come from every walk of life some abducted, others lured by traffickers. They are then transported to other states where they are forced to perform sexual acts, sometimes as often as 20 times a day. The impact on trafficked children is devastating.the victims of human trafficking are nothing more than income-producing property for their handlers. They have each been robbed of their childhood. There is no joy in their lives.through stepped-up law enforcement efforts in Louisiana more and more children are being rescued from trafficking in every part of our state. Please give generously to this collection. Metanoia House cannot continue to do the good work it does without your help. If you will not be able to go to the Mission, please send your donation to one of our churches, either by mail or by dropping it in Sunday s collection in an envelope marked Metanoia House.
