Blake Jennings Grace Bible Church Southwood Setting Goals 2 Timothy 2:1-6 As we begin a new semester, what goals should we pursue as individuals, families, and as a church? Discover God's most important priorities for your life. Turn to 2 Timothy This morning we re going to talk about setting GOALS - for us as individuals, families, and as a church - As you head off to school or your kids do an ideal time to set goals for this fall - Julie and I have been thinking a lot about that this week because o we sent our kids off to kindergarten this week! o when you just have twins the start of kindergarten is a dramatic change o you send your oldest and youngest off to school at the same time o I still can t believe I have school-aged children. The start of school is an ideal time to set our goals for the coming year - I don t know what all this year will hold I just know it will be busy! Fall is always busy. - If I don t set goals now, fall will slip by; suddenly it s December; where d my time go?! We set goals now to keep us from getting distracted by unimportant things and wasting the limited time we ve got - Story told from back in 1800 s 2 steam-driven paddleboats left Memphis together - Sailors from one started talking trash about the pace of the other boat - Challenges were made and a race began - Both boats stoked their engines and roared down the river - One boat began to fall behind it had plenty of coal for the trip but not enough for a race - Enterprising sailor grabbed some of the cargo and threw it in the oven - When other sailors saw that the cargo burned as well as coal, threw it all in - That was all the fuel they needed they caught up and won the race - but they burned all their cargo the whole reason they were hired to go down river! I don t want to get to the end of the fall and realize I burned my cargo - I don t want to get to December and realize I wasted my time on unimportant things - I want to make sure I use my time doing what really matters. So what should our goals be this fall as individuals, as families, and as a church? - What should we focus on? To answer that question, turn to 2 Timothy chapter 4

This is an unusual book - read 4:6 - many books written by authors who were in danger or in prison - but not many written by someone who knew they were about to die o Paul knew his time was up o He was right beheaded 3 months after writing this letter o This is the last letter from Paul we have any record of - If you were writing what you knew would be your last letter, what would you write? o Focus on the most important things wouldn t waste time on chit-chat, fluff o Pour your heart and soul into that letter - That s what Paul does writes some of the most direct and heartfelt advice in Bible - That includes our passage this morning: 2:1-6 o where Paul lays out for Tim the most important goals in life o Tim, this is what your life should be about what every life should be about - 2 Tim 2 gives clear picture of God s goals for our lives, our families, and our church o goals outlined by 3 commands in v1,2,3 o if we do these 3 things well, this semester will be a success Goal #1: Let us 1. Find strength in God s grace - Read v1 - my son not speaking as Timothy s boss, but as a father passing on advice to his son - Priority 1: be strong in grace o lit: be empowered/strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus o in Greek passive tense verb not be strong / make yourself strong but be made strong / be strengthened o Christian life is NOT about setting your jaw and gritting your teeth Not about working hard to impress God and others thru your righteousness o Christian life about receiving strength from God being strengthened by His grace - But what is this grace that strengthens us o define: basic idea = getting something good you don t deserve o We ve received something good we don t deserve in Christ Jesus this grace comes to us through Jesus - What good does God give us through Jesus? EVERYTHING that s good in your life! o John 1:3 we owe our existence, life, body, soul, intelligence, talents, beauty everything good about you as a person is a gift from Jesus who created you o Rom 3:23-24 we have all sinned done things that are wrong Good news: Jesus redeemed us from our sin by dying in our place So that we could be forgiven and justified = made right in God s sight Salvation is a gift we don t earn it or pay it back Jesus earned it for us o A gift not just for this life, but for the next life Rom 6:23 Jesus rose from the dead to defeat sin & death so that we could live forever We will live eternally with God in heaven not because we deserve it or earn it

o We owe our lives, our salvation, our future to Jesus. I could go on and on Everything good in your life comes from Him James 1:17a - So grace in 2 Tim is everything good in your life it all comes to you through Jesus - So to find strength: focus on what Jesus has already done for you o You will need strength at some point this semester You ll get tired, stressed, discouraged, depressed - Where will you turn to find strength? o Where will you look for hope, joy, confidence, security? - You can like the rest of the world look to yourself o rely on your intellect, looks, $, popularity, accomplishments, relationships o to feel strong and confident o Problem: if you rely on yourself for strength you will be disappointed One of God s primary lessons for me personally this last year I am not nearly as strong as I thought I was weak, broken, foolish If you think otherwise about yourself you ve just not lived long enough! You will fall, you will break, you will learn the folly of trusting in yourself 2 Cor 4:7 We have this treasure in jars of clay so easily broken! - Only way to make it thru life: learn to find strength in the grace Jesus has given you o When you feel weak and afraid don t look to yourself for confidence you will let yourself down look to Jesus and to what He s already given you what gives me strength to preach? knowledge that because of Jesus I ll spend eternity in heaven no matter how bad this sermon goes o When you feel alone or abandoned look to the grace of Jesus remember that you are so loved by Him that He willingly died for you so that you could be forgiven - So let s get practical for a moment. How do we actually find strength in grace? - For some of us we need to discover God s grace for the first time o You ve been trying to make life work on your own Because you don t believe in God or Jesus Or because you believe that salvation and heaven are things you have to earn o Good news: there is a God in heaven who loves you so much He sent His Son just say YES, I want that! - For those of us who have trusted in Jesus, how do we find strength in His grace? o Very simple: each and every day we spend time REMEBERING o Common theme in the Old Testament God telling Israel REMEMBER what I ve done for you Don t let yourself forget how much I love you; how special you are o Find strength to resist sin & love people by remembering how much God loves you o Take time every day to remember how good God has been to you When you wake give thanks for another day of life Before you eat give thanks for the way He s provided When you sin give thanks that He has forgiven you When you feel discouraged give thanks that this world is not your home When you feel alone give thanks that you re never alone you are loved!

When you go to bed give thanks for another day of life you didn t deserve Find strength in God s grace by REMEMBERING all the good He has given you through Jesus Goal #2: Let us 2. Be links in the chain of faith - read v2 - The things which you have heard from me o Tim spent years with Paul heard lots of stuff! So very broad body of knowledge o = the whole Christian faith = all beliefs & practices that go into Christianity includes heavy stuff like Trinity and salvation includes everyday stuff like: marriage, raising kids, money - Tim was to take all that and entrust it to others who would do the same o faithful men" because Tim was a man if to a woman it would say women o entrust = to deliver something valuable to someone for safekeeping You take something that s precious to you and you give it to someone else o Star Wars is precious to me I was a child when the movies came out remember the excitement! Original trilogy will always be at the top of my list because it was so formative Why I was so pleased to come home yesterday and see this I wanted to name the twins Luke and Leia I got one! I feel successful as a father because I ve entrusted my love of Star Wars to them o That s what God is calling us to do with something infinitely more important Take our faith all its beliefs & practices and pass it on to next generation to our children, to new believers, to younger believers o More than just teaching also mentoring, training, coaching Paul was about to die but that was ok because he had poured all of Christianity in to Timothy so Timothy can take over and pour it into the next generation - Paul and Tim were just links in the chain of faith - And here we are 2000 years later the newest links in the chain of faith o the way we teach it has changed use different vocabulary and applications o But the beliefs and practices of Christianity those haven t changed o Our faith handed down from Jesus & disciples remains much the same o It s one of the few unchanging things in our rapidly changing world 1956 5 MB IBM hard drive, big as 2 refrigerators but much heavier Your 16 GB iphone has 3200 times more storage and fits in your pocket! o Everything in this world changes and becomes obsolete o Except our faith same today, tomorrow, forever - And we just links in the chain passing that faith on to the next generation o I sure don t want to be the weak link in that chain! o If you ve worked on a bike or chainsaw chain is only as strong as weakest link! o Others have faithfully poured into my life mom, dad, youth pastor, Brian o I don t want that chain of faith to end with me

- So my 2 nd priority this fall: entrust what I have received to the next generation o Includes you all, the staff, but most important: my kids o Our 1 st responsibility as parents: pass on what we ve learned to our kids so they can pass it on to the next generation after we re gone Parents we can t farm that out church & school can partner, not replace o As Ps 145:4 puts it That s what God wants for our families and for our church We can't control whether or not that next generation adopts our faith But we can control whether or not we re faithful to pass it on - So let s all be links in the chain of faith o 1 st : That means that every one of us needs to learn from others We need to connect with those who can teach, train, mentor us Trey will come up at the end to tell you how o 2 nd : Every one of us needs to invest in others Share the beliefs and practices of Christianity with your family, friends, roommates, new believers, grandkids Look for opportunities this fall to teach, train, model, coach, & encourage Finally, the 3 rd goal for us this fall: Let us 3. Endure hardships without losing hope - read v3 - hardship not necessarily persecution o = the unavoidable, everyday hardships that are part of a person s life o Life is hard for everyone without exception there is no such thing as an easy life o Job 5:7 & Eccl 2:23 - Life will be hard how you respond will depend primarily on your expectations o If you expect life to be easy & happy, when it isn t you ll be crushed o But if, like a soldier, you expect life to be hard and full of sacrifice when it is, you won t be surprised or disappointed - Paul is framing Timothy s expectations o Be like a good soldier expect life to be hard then you won t be caught off-guard - Expect hardships that s the first point of all 3 metaphors that come next o read v4-6 o Soldiers don t get to enjoy the affairs of everyday life Even if not at war they still miss out on the pleasures and comforts of home o Athletes must sacrifice pleasure, comfort, leisure to train for their event Paul s day: Olympic athletes had to train everyday for 10 months to qualify o Same with farmers even today wake up early, go to bed late, from planting to harvest can t take vacation or you risk losing the harvest - Life as a follower of Christ will be hard like a soldier s life, athlete s life, farmer s life o We will have hard work, sacrifice, struggle, temptations, suffering o That s just life this side of heaven it will be hard & unpleasant much of the time

- But unlike people of this world We can endure because we have HOPE in the next life o v4 we know that faithfulness in this life will please our commanding officer if we endure sufferings well, we will see Jesus smile when stand before Him o v5 we know that faithfulness in this life brings a prize in the next life o same in v6 hard work now brings us first-fruits in the next life o What is that prize and those first-fruits? I don t know NOT heaven that s a gift you don t earn that But if you have lived a faithful life then Jesus will reward you with honor and joy that you otherwise wouldn t have - Faithfulness now brings reward later and that gives us hope even when we suffer o When the people of this world suffer: their only option is to anesthetize the pain with pleasure, entertainment, possessions, or pills o But we can endure the pain and stay faithful to Jesus because we know pain won t last! Suffering will pass. Joy comes in the morning in the next life - So goal #3 for this fall when life gets hard o don t be surprised o don t use it as an excuse for sin don t give up on God o endure your suffering as a normal and unavoidable part of life o and have hope because you know that a better world is coming soon So what must we do to succeed in life this fall? - find our strength in God s grace by REMEMBERING how blessed we are by Jesus - be a link in the chain of faith by learning from those and investing in others - endure hardship by expecting it and by clinging to hope in the next life All 3 of those goals are hard to accomplish especially so if we try to do it alone The secret to accomplishing these goals: join with others headed in the same direction - Join a community of people pursuing these same goals and support each other - I ve asked Trey Corry our college pastor to walk us through opportunities
