Fan into flame the gift of God Don t be ashamed Join with me in suffering Keep the pattern of sound teaching Guard the good deposit Be strong! Entrust! Join with me in suffering
Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. 5 Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor s crown except by competing according to the rules. 6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. 7 Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. 8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. 2 Timothy 2:3-8a (NIV)
This is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God s word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. 11 Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself. 2 Timothy 2:8b-13 (NIV)
Single-mindedness Discipline Hard work
Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 2:3 (NIV)
No soldier comes to the war surrounded by luxuries, nor goes into action from a comfortable bedroom, but from the makeshift and narrow tent, where every kind of hardness and severity and unpleasantness is to be found. Address to Martyrs, Tertullian (c AD)
To choose to suffer means that there is something wrong; to choose God s will even if it means suffering is a very different thing. No healthy saint ever chooses suffering; he chooses God s will, as Paul did, whether it means suffering or not. Oswald Chambers

Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. 2 Timothy 2:7 (NIV)
Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God s word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. 2 Timothy 2:8-10 (NIV)
Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself. 2 Timothy 2:11-13 (NIV)
What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God s faithfulness? Romans 3:3 (NIV)
God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:9 (NIV)
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)
But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not Yes and No. 2 Corinthians 1:18 (NIV)
The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:24 (NIV)
But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. 2 Thessalonians 3:3 (NIV)
Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself. 2 Timothy 2:11-13 (NIV)
The apostle Paul seems to have been hammering home a single lesson. From secular analogy (soldiers, athletes, farmers) and from spiritual experience (Christ s, his own, every Christian s) he has been insisting that blessing comes through pain, fruit through toil, life through death, and glory through suffering. It is an invariable law of Christian life and service. John R.W. Stott
