AUGUST 13, 2017 PAGE 3 from the Senior Parochial Vicar s Desk... THE ASSUMPTIN OF MARY This coming Tuesday, August 15th, is a holy day of obligation. Catholics have a duty (and also the great joy) to attend Mass for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a serious obligation. Therefore, a Catholic who purposely fails to attend Mass for the holy day commits a serious sin. In your mind now remember that ka-ching sound from the TV series, Law & Order. OK, enough of my duty as a priest to remind you about your duties and sin. The Assumption of Mary and its Catholic theology/dogma is one of those special Catholic holy days that often sets us apart from our dear Protestant-Christian friends. All of us are going to die one day; it is a consequence of Original Sin. After death our dead bodies are to be disposed of in a dignified manner. The Church always prefers burial like Our Lord, but cremation is permitted; also donation of the body to medical science is a possibility. We watch movies of burial at sea where the captain of the ship or chaplain says, until that day when the sea shall give up its dead. (Revelation 20:13). By the way, do not forget that it is an important article of our faith from the Nicene Creed which we stand up to profess every Sunday and Holy Day:...and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Mary in heaven is not waiting for the resurrection of the body for herself. As a special favor to her from her Divine Son, Mary is already sharing in that gift/reward from Him. My mother worked for the Federal Government back in 1950 when the U.S. conducted the decennial census which the U.S. Constitution requires during years that end with a zero (2010, 2020, etc.) Mom had a section of residential streets which were her responsibility to cover. She carried a big-paged book, had some sort of badge, and went up and down her streets, ringing doorbells to take the census information. My two younger brothers were not yet born; my older brother was full-time in the second grade. After school he walked to Gramdma and Grandpa Winkel s house. I was in kindergarden which was only for half of a day. So I got farmed out to Grandma and Grandpa Geiger s house (Ma was a Geiger before she married Dad.) Grandma Geiger said the Rosary every day and she gave me my own plastic, big-bead rosary. I knew the Hail Mary beads from the Our Father beads. She always announced the Mysteries which she explained were important events just as our family had important events like birthdays. So I learned from her that the Fourth Glorious Mystery was The Assumption of Mary into Heaven. As a five-year-old I had also memorized my full name (because of my hearing defect I thought my middle name was Joe-puff ), phone number, address, along with the Hail Mary, Our Father, Glory be, and the Bless us O Lord prayer that we said before we ate. In the summer of 1950 I was saying with Grandma The Assumption of Mary into Heaven before Pope Pius XII solemnly defined for us Catholics (and the whole world) during the then Jubilee Year on All Saints Day, November 1, 1950:...by the authority of Our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by Our own authority, We pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. The above quotation is from the Apostolic Constitution of Pope Pius XII, entitled MUNIFICENTISSIMUS DEUS (The Most Bountiful God), November 1, 1950, paragraph #44. What Jesus has already done for His Mother will also one day be our own destiny. X X X X X X X X X It is always nice to have a party and celebrate. Our clustersister parish, Holy Rosary in Little Italy, has a four-day celebration which they usually refer to simply as The Feast (not to be confused with last Sunday s diocesan celebration at the Wickliffe seminary property called The Fest.) Holy Rosary Parish s The Feast starts this Saturday, August 12th. On the fourth and last day, which is the actual holy day, Tuesday, August 15th, they will have their Solemn Mass at 10 a.m. followed by the grand procession with the statue of Mary carried through the streets of their neighborhood. Oh, Oh! Another little Tommy Winkel memory: Dad would take my older brother and me from our Parma home to Holy Rosary s Feast on a night when he did not have to work the next day. (It was a different era when a seven-year-old and an older brother could be watched from a distance.) Older brother and I went on rides while Dad enjoyed gambling at the Feast. I distinctly remember red dice. Dad always told my mother when we returned home that he had won. X X X X X X X X X Do not act surprised this coming Tuesday when the holy day has arrived. NOW look at our parish s Mass schedule for the Assumption of Mary and NOW make plans for which Mass time here, or at another Catholic parish, will fit your schedule. Father Winkel
