The Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany January 28, 2018 8:00am & 10:30 a.m. AS WE GATHER God s Word regarding salvation is clear and sure. He spoke through Moses and the prophets who followed him. And finally, He spoke most clearly in His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. But false prophets and unclean spirits can seem convincing and powerful. So, in today s Epistle, Paul urges us to be concerned for the brother for whom Christ died. Jesus once-for-all sacrifice gives us freedom. But it also calls us to sacrifice our rights for the sake of others in the weakness of their faith or conscience. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN: O God of God, O Light of Light LSB 810 INVOCATION The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P: O almighty God, merciful Father, C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. 2

P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. INTROIT P: Many are the sorrows of the wicked, C: but steadfast love surrounds the one who trust in the Lord. P: Blessèd is the one whose transgression is forgiven, C: whose sin is covered. P: Blessèd is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, C: and in whose spirit there is no deceit. P: I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; C: I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. P: Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found; C: surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him. P: You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; C: you surround me with shouts of deliverance. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: Many are the sorrows of the wicked, C: but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord. SALUTATION AND PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray Almighty God, You know we live in the midst of so many dangers that in our frailty we cannot stand upright. Grant strength and protection to support us in all dangers and carry us through all temptations; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Sit 3

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Deuteronomy 18:15-20 15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers it is to him you shall listen 16 just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die. 17 And the Lord said to me, They are right in what they have spoken. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 19 And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him. 20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. HYMN: (8:00am only) God Has Spoken by His Prophets LSB 583 EPISTLE: 1 Corinthians 8:1-13 Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that all of us possess knowledge. This knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. 2 If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. 3 But if anyone loves God, he is known by God. 4 Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that an idol has no real existence, and that there is no God but one. 5 For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth as indeed there are many gods and many lords 6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. 7 However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8 Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. 9 But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? 11 And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. 12 Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their 4

conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand HOLY GOSPEL: Mark 1:21-28 L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the first chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are the Holy One of God. 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent, and come out of him! 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him. 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. Sit CHILDREN S MESSAGE (8:00am only) Stand 5

NICENE CREED C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Sit SERMON HYMN: May We Thy Precepts, Lord, Fulfill LSB 698 THE MESSAGE (1 Corinthians 8:1-13) OFFERING (Please sign and date the Rite of Friendship pad located in the pew. The children are invited to bring their offerings to the front at this time.) Stand PRAYERS 6

LORD S PRAYER ALL: Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. (8:00am continues on page 9; 10:30am continues here) Holy Communion P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P: It is truly good, right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord for what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name. C: Holy Lord God, heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest. P: Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord. C: Hosanna in the highest. WORDS OF OUR LORD PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26 C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Revelation 22:20 7

THE PEACE OF THE LORD P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. Sit About Holy Communion The Lord s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord s table. Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p. 329-330 in the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord s Supper, please pick up a copy of What is the Lord s Supper? at the Information table in the entryway. Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. If your health requires glutenfree wafers, they are available upon request. Speak to the pastor prior to the service. Our pastors are happy to speak to you further if you have any questions. DISTRIBUTION HYMNS: Jesus Comes Today With Healing LSB 620 God Has Spoken by His Prophets LSB 583 Stand THE DISMISSAL P: O Give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, C: His mercy endureth forever. P: Let us pray O God the Father, the fountain and source of all goodness, who in loving kindness sent Your only-begotten Son into the flesh, we thank You that for His sake You have given us pardon and peace in this Sacrament, and we ask You not to forsake Your children but always to rule our Hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that we may be enabled constantly to serve You. Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 8

P: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. P: Bless we the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (8:00am continues here) BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen. CLOSING HYMN: Son of God, Eternal Savior LSB 842 Church of the Week (COTW) February 12-18 This annual community outreach provides overnight shelter and meals for the homeless. In addition to providing overnight shelter in our Fellowship Hall for 25-35 people each night, we will be preparing and serving a community meal for 100 people at Place of Hope every night at 5:00pm. Many volunteers are needed, to drive the bus, prepare & serve meals and snacks. Also, overnight volunteers (hosts/hostesses) are needed to serve 5 hour shifts for overnight security (Married couples, 2 men or 2 women). On Sunday January 21 st many of you, with the gift of Giving, contributed to our door offering of $842. Thank-you for your generous response! In 1 Peter 4:10a it says that, Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others. Have you found ways to respond to God s gift of salvation that He has given to you in Christ? We are still in need of overnight volunteers. Overnight volunteers sacrifice some sleep to serve the homeless with a ministry of their presence. Please consider the gifts God has given you. Could you use them to serve others as an overnight volunteer? The King will reply, I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. (Matthew 25:40). Please call me with any questions, Craig Cooper, DCO, 237-5507. Scholarship LCEF is offering a $1000 scholarship to a qualifying individual. Deadline is Jan. 31 st. Our Lord Jesus Christ, True God in the Flesh, Cleanses Our Consciences from Sin As He promised, the Lord our God has raised up a prophet like Moses, namely Jesus, our brother in the flesh. To him you shall listen, because the Word of the Lord is in his mouth (Deut. 18:15 18). Indeed, He is more than a prophet and more than a scribe of the Scriptures; He is the incarnate Word, and He speaks a new teaching with authority (Mark 1:22, 27). He enters the synagogue of His Church and provides true Sabbath rest, using His authority to silence and cast out even the unclean spirits (Mark 1:21 27). By His Word of the cross, He removes the accusations of the Law and of the devil, and He cleanses our consciences before God the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist. Hence, we are now set free from bondage and commended to God by the one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist (1 Cor. 8:6). Therefore, use your freedom to care for your brothers and sisters, neither causing them to stumble nor wounding their consciences (1 Cor. 8:9 12), but cleansing and strengthening them with the Gospel.
