They were from the Chosen People of God one of the very reasons that God had chosen a people was to prepare that people and eventually to bring forth the Messiah from that people. The Fathers of the Church are very careful to make sure we understand that being a chosen people doesn t mean your better than everyone else. The Chosen People are chosen by an all-knowing God to fulfill His purposes. And that s it. So the relatives of Christ were obviously from among the Jews. All of Hebrew people were the Chosen People, but only some of the people are recognized to be the forefathers of Christ. And this really doesn t have anything to do with bloodline. We warmly welcome all of our visitors! It s good to have you with us!

John knew the Messiah was coming, and he wanted everyone to be ready to receive Him into their hearts. The whole season of Advent is one such calling: Jesus is coming, so get ready for Him! We participate in the Sacrament of Confession precisely so that we can get rid of any obstacles of sin that keep us from receiving God s love to the fullest. $2,544 $1315 Щиро Вам дякуємо! Thank you for your Generosity! Please plan to be here to sing that beautiful hymn O khto, khto Nikolaya lyubit-those who love Nicholas the Saintly in honor of St. Nicholas and to enjoy Christian fellowship, refreshments in the Church hall Planning a Wedding in 2016? - Engaged couples, should contact Fr. Darren as soon as possible regarding their proposed wedding and upcoming marriage classes.. As we approach the end of the year, you may wish to review your offering envelopes including the Pre-authorized debit to see if you postponed or overlooked any that you want to make up before Tuesday, December 29, 2015. All offerings received after this date Will be for 2016. The following questions are meant to help you prepare for confession. Take some time to ponder these questions and ask the Holy Spirit to shine His light into your heart. Let Him show you where you need to be set free so that you can better rejoice with the angels on Christmas Day. Lord Jesus, You showed us how to love God with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength (Mark 12:30). What about me? Am I returning God s love for me? Or is something holding me back comforts, possessions, self-will, fear of criticism, or something else? Does God hold first place in my life or do I tend to follow my own agenda? Is He the Lord of my time, money and other resources? Do I seek God through faithful Sunday Liturgy (Mass) attendance, the Sacraments, and regular times of prayer and Scripture reading? Do I keep Sunday as a holy day? Does my speech honour God? Or have I fallen into cursing, grumbling, gossip, crude language or verbal abuse? Do I tell others what God has done for me? Jesus, from the manger to the cross, Your life was an outpouring of love for others. Now You call me to love my neighbour as myself (Mark 12:31). Do I show my love for people by the way I act and speak? Am I harboring resentment, anger, or unforgiveness in any of my relationships? Have I hurt anyone? Is there anyone I need to forgive? Do I respect my parents, teachers, employers, civil authorities, and other legitimate authority? Am I helping to build a world where every person is valued and seen as having dignity? Do I serve the poor, the sick, and the suffering? Do I seek peace in my family, community, parish, and workplace? Do I try to form my conscience based on the teachings of the Church? Do I promote a respect for all life, from conception to natural death? Have I been chaste and faithful to any vows I have taken before God? Have I viewed pornography or fallen into other impure behaviours? Have I abused my body in any way? Have I respected the bodies of others? Are there other areas where the Holy Spirit is leading me towards repentance and renewal any sins of omission, envy or theft? Any deeds or hurts I ve covered over? Whatever sins and weaknesses your examination of conscience may reveal, remember: If Christ is for you, who can be against you? (Romans 8:31). So come to Him with faith and hope for change.

News headlines carry stories of modern Herod's banning nativity scenes, religious performances, and even the word Christmas. The constant bickering over corporate messaging and the commercialization of Christmas tries to shrink the meaning of Christmas into a winter holiday. Yet these problems are signs on the way to important truths, if we have the eyes to see them. Look at our spending and debt, we are trying to fill a lack in society, an emptiness of heart. Even our poor leadership in America reminds us that we crave a true king and are expectant of a greater day. Part of the cause of the rise of secularism and a less meaningful Christmas is that we have lost the sense of expectancy. We want instant gratificationhere and now. Advent points towards the preparation for and celebration of the Nativity, but also to the Second Coming of Christ. The New Testament ends with the anticipation of Christ's return: "He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus." (Rev. 22:20) In their lifetime, the apostles lived in anticipation and excitement for the return of Christ. What Christmas announces to the world offends modern sensibilities. The mystery and depth of the Incarnation-God becoming man-seems unfathomable. Praising Christmas carols, G. K. Chesterton noted; "It is extraordinary to notice how completely this feeling of the paradox of the manger was lost by the brilliant and ingenious theologians, and how it was completely kept in the Christmas carols. They, at least, never forgot that the main business of the story they had to tell was that the absolute once ruled the universe from a cattle stall." Christmas has united much of the world and is responsible for a common identity in the West and the rise of the Western Roman Empire out of barbarism. "In adoring the birth of our Savior, we find ourselves celebrating our own nativity; for the birth of Christ is the birth of the Christian people." declared St. Pope Leo the Great. Christmas reminds us of the shortcomings of man and what God has accomplished and done to intercede on our behalf. 'Today God came to earth in the flesh, and the human race was lifted up to the heavens Seeing the one who was made in the image and likeness fall because of his transgressions, Jesus lowered/bent the heavens and came down '-From the Great Compline of the Nativity- It's a reminder of our sinful nature and it's not simply a great holiday or a time of joy for the unrepentant. While our culture faces new hostilities to the Christmas message, the real culprit is indifference to its greater meaning and a lack of appreciation for its power on the part of the believers.. It has always been the task of the believers to transcend the secular culture. Modern Herods, atheism, secularism, and materialism may combine to rob Christmas of its meaning, but it s a futile effort in the face of faithfulness. 'God is with us! Understand all you people and be humbled, for God is with us.'-great Compline of the Nativity. The New Testament ends with the anticipation of Christ's return: "He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." St Josaphats Church Bulletin, Warren MI

Doesn t this stand in conflict with Christ s teachings on humility? The idea of those who preside at public worship services is not unknown in Scripture read Exodus 28 and 29, for example. As such, in virtually every Christian tradition Orthodox Christian, Roman Catholic, and much of Protestantism presiding clergy wear vestments of some type, albeit not of the same style, when engaged in leading the faithful in worship. [Sometimes such garb is academic in origin, rather than strictly liturgical; nevertheless, the preacher wearing a doctoral robe does not do so out of pride or self-aggrandizement.] So, those who lead public worship are set apart by wearing formal robes specific to their calling, and not for the purpose of exalting themselves above the so called rank and file. The purpose here is not to personally adorn the clergy or to elevate them above the common people, any more than judges who wear black robes or physicians who wear a white jacket are being aggrandized because of their vocations. When discharging their official duties, judges and physicians vest themselves accordingly, indicating their functions, so to speak. So too clergy, when officiating at liturgical services, wear vestments. Vestments, obviously, do not resemble secular garb, in line with the fact that Orthodox Christian liturgical celebrations are not secular gatherings, nor are they designed to resemble them. Liturgy is our experience of and participation in the very Kingdom of God, yet to be fully revealed but already fully present in the life of the Church, her worship, and her sacraments St Josaphat Cathedral, Edmonton AB
