FROM THE PASTOR S DESK In The Odyssey, when Odysseus returns home after many years of adventures and sufferings, he encounters his father Laertes digging in his vineyard, worn by age and sorrow. When Odysseus reveals who he is, Laertes is not sure if he can believe him, and so asks for a sign that this is really his son. Homer describes what happened: Odysseus said: That wound first of all look, here it is for you to see! You remember how the boar gashed me with his tusk as I ran on him? Yes, and let me tell you the trees you gave me in this jolly orchard, when I was a little boy and went around the garden with you and begged for each! We walked among these very trees, you told me their names every one! Thirteen pear trees you gave me and ten apples, forty figs; rows of vines you promised, fifty of them bearing at different times through the vintage, grapes of all sorts, whenever Zeus made them heavy in the season of the year! The old man s knees crickled under him, and his heart melted, as he heard the signs recounted which he knew so well; he laid his arms about his son s neck, and Odysseus held him fainting. On Father s Day it is good to remind ourselves that the bond between parents and their children is a sacred one. So many private, ordinary experiences they share will never be forgotten, no matter how many years slip by. God calls parents to form their children in the Faith s eternally enduring values not only by passing on its traditional precepts, but by showing children what it means to be a friend of Christ and to live his ways. And, as we are well aware, the privileged years when this responsibility matters most crucially pass with astonishing swiftness. To the fathers of our parish who are now raising your families: May God bless you in your vocation and help you with such an important task. To all the fathers whose children are now grown up: May you continue to pray for them and be close to them. And may all our fathers who have died be remembered today in reverent and grateful prayers. Msgr. David Hubba THIRD SATURDAY PRAYER JUNE 21 All parishioners are invited to join the Legion of Mary after the Mass in Mary s Chapel on Saturday, June 21. After the Rosary, we will have a reflection on the Twin Hearts. MOST HOLY TRINITY, JUNE 15, 2014 3 A SPECIAL THANK YOU Dear Parishioners of Saint Joseph, I salute you for your most generous contribution to the Catholic War Veterans' CROSS OF PEACE campaign on Memorial Day Weekend. Your contribution totaled an amazing $1,650.39. Saint Joseph's generosity has helped all our Veterans, especially those very special men and women at the Paramus Veterans Memorial Home. It takes the LOVE of one Brother looking after his many Brothers and Sisters who served this country, and YOU, Saint Joseph Parish, have demonstrated that love by your most generous contributions. Again, I SALUTE YOU and say THANK YOU. Peace be with you, Jeffrey Harm 1st Vice Commander, Catholic War Veterans BIBLE STUDY GATHERING JUNE 17 If you participated in the Great Adventure Bible Series you are cordially invited to join us on Tuesday, June 17, at 7:30 pm in the Parish Life Center. There will also be a special announcement at this meeting, so don't miss it!! Join us as we plan for Cornerstone XXIII. If you have to be a little late, there is still room for you. All are welcome!! POPE FRANCIS PRAYER FOR FATHERS I ask for you the grace to always be very close to your children, letting them grow, but close.... They need you, your presence, your closeness, your love. Be like Saint Joseph for them, guardians of their growth in age, wisdom and grace. Guardians of their journey. Educators! And walk with them....thank you for all that you do for your children. Thank you. Best wishes and happy Father's Day to all the fathers... May Saint Joseph bless you and be with you. Pope Francis on March 19, 2014

SPECIAL INTENTIONS You can donate the Bread and/or Wine used during a week s Masses in memory of a loved one or for a special intention. Contact the parish office at 201-261-0148 for available dates. AN INVITATION TO THE CATHOLIC FAITH JOURNEY Saint Joseph Church welcomes all those who seek to explore the possibility of becoming a Catholic Christian through the RCIA program (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Who is RCIA for? Adults never baptized Adults baptized in another Christian church Adults baptized Catholic who have not received full reception into the church through the Sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation What is RCIA? Catholicism is a way of life and a journey in faith. RCIA is a process, rooted in history, which is designed to educate in the Catholic faith and prepare adults to receive the sacraments of the Church. It seeks, however, to do more than simply give interested persons information. Becoming Catholic involves entering into a relationship with a community of God's people. Our hope is that you will enjoy a deeper relationship with God as you also become acquainted with members of Saint Joseph and the Church throughout the world. You will notice how your own life experiences and beliefs have brought you to this point as you listen to God's invitation to explore the Catholic faith. At the same time, members of the parish are praying for you, attending sessions with you, and sharing their own life stories as Catholics. For more information, contact Father Roy Regaspi at 201-261-0148 and join us any time at Mass. SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ You ve probably already noticed how beautiful the front doors to our church now look. After many years of extreme weather damage, our Facilities Director Tom Meli arranged with Hiemer & Company, Clifton, NJ, to remove, sand, refinish and rehang all four doors. Now they sparkle as they welcome parishioners and visitor alike to Saint Joseph Church! 4 FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM: FREEDOM TO SERVE JUNE 21 to JULY 4 The theme of this year s Fortnight will focus on freedom to serve the poor and vulnerable in accord with human dignity and the Church s teaching. Participation in the Fortnight for Freedom is simple; all it takes is a concerted effort to do something that promotes our freedom as Catholics to serve one another. You can offer a day of faith-based service within the community, perhaps volunteering at a soup kitchen or helping to paint, garden, clean, or organize donations at a local charity. No act of service is too small to make a difference! Go to www.fortnight4freedom.org to learn more. Your financial and prayerful support of the 2014 Annual Appeal allows the Archdiocese to offer a number of programs and ministries that serve those in need. Through a gift of nearly three million dollars to the Catholic Charities of Newark, the Archdiocese of Newark is able to provide meaningful funds to better serve those less fortunate. Contributing to the Annual Appeal is just one of many ways in which you can help protect the freedom to serve. 268 Saint Joseph parishioners have already pledged $57,023 toward our parish goal of $64,000 for the Annual Appeal. SPECIAL NOON MASS JUNE 21 A special Mass and support group meeting for all who are affected by the disease of alcoholism will take place at the Church of St. Mary, 20 Legion Place, Closter, on Saturday, June 21 at 12 noon. Mass is offered for the support, healing and recovery of not only the person directly infected with the abuse of alcohol, but also for anyone involved in the life of the alcoholic or drug addict. For information, please call 201-768-7565. OPEN WIDE THE DOORS TO CHRIST!

Catholics and the Catholic Church have been an integral part of life in the Garden State from its earliest days.... Let our bells peal both with joy at this moment in time, and in recognition of the loyal and devoted Catholics of the past, present and the future whose traditions and depth of faith from distant lands have strengthened and will continue to strengthen our State and our Nation.
