Sacrament of the Sick- Please call and let us know if a family member is sick and would like to be anointed. Faith Formation for All Our Religious Education classes are held on Sunday Mornings (10:00 a.m.) for children in grades 1-8. In addition families are expected to participate in monthly Family Faith Days WITH their children, as well as Family Mass on the First Sat of each month (Oct-May) at 5p.m. Children will participate in the program for a minimum of 2 years to prepare for sacraments. Monday classes (4:00 p.m.) are offered for those older youngsters and their families who are seeking sacraments of initiation. Initiation for Adults (R.C.I.A.) Adults who are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith gather on Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the parish house. The door is always open to newcomers. Staff Corner Hello SFDS! So we have reached February and a whole lot is happening in our community. I would like to tell you about a couple. First, this weekend is the second Mass led by our new Youth Choir. We are so proud of our young people for saying yes to active ministry in the church. We look forward to continued growth. The Youth Choir will have an important role in our celebration of Easter, so, now is the time to encourage all of the young people in your life to join the Youth Choir. I remember participating in Music Ministry as a child. It kept me engaged not only in the Mass, but also in the community. This is a great way to not only encourage participation, but also to increase prayer, conversation and encounter God in many incredible ways. Our next Sunday Youth Choir Mass will be March 11 th. I hope to see you there. During Lent, SFDS has put together a program called Contemplative Prayer and Reflection. This service is traditionally known as Evening Prayer or Vespers. Evening Prayer has been entrenched in church tradition for many centuries and is filled with quiet prayer, chant, and scripture. If that wasn t enough to get you interested, these services will be presided at by guest homilists. Guest presiders include: Sr. Carol Perry Noted Scriptural Scholar and Author Mr. Alex Lavy Coordinator of the Gay/Straight Alliance and ALLY program at Xavier High School Zach Presutti, S.J. and the Thrive For Life Prison Ministry Team Nationally recognized for their work bringing spiritual direction, education and advocacy for those incarcerated. Sr. Donna Ciangio A friend of our parish, sought after retreat leader and author Dr. Brenna Powers Fordham University Theology Professor and expert on Women s Role and Importance in the church Each of these presiders will speak to us about issues that are at the center of the 21 st Century Catholic s life. The services will be on Sunday s during Lent at 5pm. There will be a Wine and Cheese Reception after each week s service to meet and greet each other and our presiders. SFDS will be beginning a collection of items such as T-Shirts, Toothpaste/brushes and other necessary items to create Care Packages for the inmates at Rikers Island as well as other prisons in the area. This collection is part of the ongoing prison ministry of Thrive For Life and we will present the Thrive For Life Team with our donations on March 4 th when they are with us for Evening Prayer. Boxes will be out next week with cards on them that you can take and purchase the item on the card. We will be collecting through March4 th. If you have any questions, any of your dedicated Pastoral Staff Members can answer them. We look forward to deepening our prayer with you this season. Jim Welcome This Sunday we are very excited to Welcome Fr Matt Malone SJ to lead us in worship at our 11:00 am Mass. Fr Malone is the editor of America Media (formerly America Magazine) and has helped us out on occasion when we had our Sunday evening Mass. We are looking forward to introducing him to the rest of the parish on Feb 11 and letting him see just how amazing St Francis de Sales truly is. Lent really is coming soon. And so we are planning our next session of Small Christian Community Prayer sessions. This is a very special way to mark the Lenten season, by coming together with other parishioners for one hour each week to reflect together on the Sunday Scriptures.
