With the celebration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, Jesus invites us to follow the path that he has set for us, in which we discover genuine fulfillment through service and loving concern for all human life. In the Baptism of Jesus, God revealed that baptism is much more than water cleansing or purification. It is a birth place in which the recipient is born again into the family of God through the Holy Spirit. In this encounter, the glory of Jesus was revealed when the Holy Spirit came upon him and God declared This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. My dear parishioners, each one of us has been given a call to live a life that must be pleasing to God. There are different callings for different people. Some are called to married life to commit themselves to God as husband and wife. Some are called to the single life and to witness God s love present in every walk of life. Others are called to religious life as sisters, brothers, monks and nuns. Still others are called to service as ordained deacons and priests. My dear brothers and sisters, as a community of faith, let each of us in the weeks ahead, promise to pray that Christians everywhere will renew their baptismal commitment to follow Jesus, and ask God to open the hearts of many men and women, so they may hear the happiness to which they are called through service to the Church as married, single or vowed religious, and ordained deacons and priests. As we journey together from Christmas Time to Ordinary Time, let us pray that each of us in our full response to our baptismal call may, like Jesus, hear God say: You are my beloved, with you I am well pleased! We are still receiving Christmas donations. We will post the final total in the bulletin in the coming weeks. January 10, 2016 The Baptism of the Lord Lk 3: 15-16, 21-22 Today s readings are a mini-excursion through Advent and Christmas, depositing us on the threshold of Ordinary Time. The reading from Isaiah recalls the Advent message of comfort and hope. Saint Paul proclaims that the grace of God has appeared. In the Gospel we have an adult Jesus being baptized by John, ready for his mission and affirmed by the voice of God. As we listen to these words of scripture, let us recall the voice of God. As we listen to these words of scripture, let us recall our own Baptism and prepare for whatever God will ask of us to do next. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Sunday: Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: Page 4-565 The Baptism of the Lord Is 40: 1-5, 9-11, Ti 2: 11-14; 3: 4-7 Lk 3: 15-16, 21-22 1 Sm 1: 1-8, Mk 1: 14-20 1 Sm 1: 9-20, Mk 1: 21-28 1 Sm 3: 1-10, 19-20, Mk 1: 29-39 1 Sm 4:1-11, Mk 1: 40-45 1 Sm 8: 4-7, 10-22a, Mk 2: 1-12 1 Sm 9: 1-4, 17-19; 10: 1a, Mk 2: 13-17 The Holy Father s Prayer Intentions January 2016 Universal: Interreligious Dialogue - That sincere dialogue among men and women of different faiths may produce the fruits of peace and justice. January 10, 2016 Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Page 5-565 Why was Jesus baptized if he was without sin? Much of what Jesus did in his ministry was to be an example for us. Though he was sinless, Jesus allowed himself to be baptized by John as a visible sign of his willingness to obey the Father s will. Doing the Father s will is what he wants from us. After Jesus was baptized, the skies opened up and the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased (Matthew 3: 17). Baptism is often called, The Gateway Sacrament, because it is the first one we receive when coming into the Catholic Church and the Sacrament that precedes all the others. It is usually administered to infants for that reason. Baptism is key to our own redemption so it is fitting that Jesus led the way. We follow him. There is the whole mystery: he died for you. In him you are redeemed, in him you are saved (Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 1225). WORD OF LIFE January 2016 [Jesus] showed us the self-sacrificial nature of love when he laid down His life for us, and we are called to follow in his footsteps. We are called to be his hands and feet, caring for and loving others. ~ USCCB 2015-16 Respect Life Program Prayer and Program Guide (www.goo.gl/2nrphg) 43rd ANNIVERSARY OF ROE v.
