Descendants of James Hibbitts Generation No. 1 1. JAMES 1 HIBBITTS was born 1760 in Lancaster, Lancaster Co.,PA, and died May 05, 1821 in Huntsville,Smith Co.,TN. He married (1) AGNESS JOHNSON December 01, 1790 in NC. He married (2) NANCY CRAWFORD January 07, 1793 in Cabarrus Co.,NC, daughter of DAVID CRAWFORD and MARY YOUNG. Notes for JAMES HIBBITTS: Welsh name - Hybits. David chose Hibbitts and Robt. H. chose Hibbetts and John J. chose Hibbett. When North Carolina opened up lands for it's Revolutionary soldiers, a great flock of Patriots from North Carolina and Est Tennessee poured into practically all of what is now Smith, Sumner and adjoining counties in Tennessee. James Hibbets(1760-1821) moved his family to TN before his 3rd child was born, around 1796. They had 4 sons and 3 daughters; the 4 sons spelled their last name 3 different ways. James died in 1821 without a will; the court records show his estate was divided. James and Nancy are both buried on their farm. Three of the sons remained close to Smith County. Another date of marriage from Wayne Hibbets-- James Hibbets/Nancy Crawford 28 Dec 1792 Served in Revolutionary War. Born in 1760 and died in 1821. He lived in Smith County. He is buried on Carter Branch of Goose Creek near the house he built. Magistrate of the new Smith County. Was sworn into office Dec 16 1799 He served as one of the Guards for the line in 1782; discharged 12 March 1784 From Louise H. Hibbitts, Jr. - fevahib@infi.net I have replied to another posting on this site,"james Hibbitts, b. in Maryland," which contained most of the information that matched what I have, but wanted to respond directly to you becase we clearly have a common ancestor in James Hibbett(b.1760). A great deal of information is in my possession about James Hibbett after he moved to Sumner, Co.TN. I have a copy of a letter of dismissal for James and his wife Nancy Crawford from the Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church in Iredell Co.,NC given just before their departure for TN. The original was in the possesion of a Judge DeWitt, a fairly well known Tennessee amateur historian, and I made great effort years ago to track it down without success. I have extensive court records from Sumner Co.,TN of meetings attended by James Hibbett as a magistrate and later judge of the court. One of the most interesting documents is a depostion signed by james Hibbett and also by Davy Crockett. I have seen the original site of James Hibbett's home near Hartsville, TN on Carter's Branch of Goose Creek. A house on the land probably still surrounds the original log structure. I have photographs and a detailed topographical map showing the location, which is quite far off the beaten track. Children of JAMES HIBBITTS and NANCY CRAWFORD are: i. MARY YOUNG 2 HIBBITTS, b.
