He suggested that Jesus was put to death in such a humiliating fashion because he overturned the typical religious expectation. Jesus showed that God's love, mercy, and forgiveness were freely available to all people, no matter who they might be. He suggested that the cross we wear can encourage us to love and forgive others despite the consequences. It's a good reason to take up the cross daily! Adult Faith Formation I'm pleased to announce that St. Patrick Church has a second Deacon. We want to welcome Sean and his wife, Sara to St. Patrick Church. Sean and Sara have been married for 27 years. They have 3 children, Duane, 26, Ryan, 25, and Felicia, 23. Sara grew up in Ohio, and Sean grew up in Michigan. They have lived in Marion for 20 years. Sean is a Senior Software Engineer at Rockwell Collins here in Cedar Rapids. Sara has been a para-educator in the public school system. Sean was ordained a Deacon in 2003. He served as a Deacon for 8 years at St. Joseph in Marion, and for the last 2 years at Sts. Peter and Paul in Springbrook and St. Joseph in Bellevue. Hobbies include singing in barbershop quartets. When the weather is nice Sean and Sara can be found riding their Can-Am Spyder, a three-wheeled motorcycle, out on the highways of Eastern Iowa. Please extend to them a warm St. Patrick's welcome. The anchor cross is also the emblem of Pope Saint Clement I, fourth bishop of Rome, who was tied to an anchor and thrown into the sea by Emperor Trajan in the year 101. Charity unites us to God. The WYD pilgrims will be on retreat, June 29 th in Des Moines, for a day of recollection & preparation with Bishop Pates & the Des Moines pilgrims. Catholic Young Adults of Cedar Rapids (21-39) YOUNG ADULTS BIBLE CHALLENGE: Catholic Youth Adults of Cedar Rapids (20s and 30s) invites you to participate in the Young Adults Bible Challenge on Saturday, June 29th at 7:30 PM in the Parish Education Wing. Based on the popular game show the American Bible Challenge, you will participate in a friendly competition on teams to answer questions and complete physical challenges. The Knights of Columbus will be praying a NINE-DAY PATRIOTIC ROSARY NOVENA beginning June 25 through July 3 praying for Religious Freedom in this country & around the world. The Novena will begin each night at 6:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception, Cedar Rapids. All are welcome. GREEN SQUARE MEALS is one of Cedar Rapids most wellknown meals program. Most of the food and all of the labor is donated and depends on a rotation of volunteers from about 20 area churches to help prepare and clean up after each day s meal, served from 4:30 to 6 p.m. St. Pat s sends a team of ten people the fourth Friday of every month. If you would like to be on this friendly team of volunteers who are making a difference by feeding the hungry please call or email Cindy at the parish office.
