Parish Mission Statement Immaculate Conception Catholic Church celebrates the Eucharist and proclaims the gospel in worship through our love of God and for each other and with our ministry to the marginalized. We journey together in our faith, united by our trust in Christ s love and mercy and the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Staff Connection... April 9, 2017 The name of this weekend s celebration is Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion. Just the title should give us a clue that something unusual is happening! Our celebration started differently today with an extra Gospel reading followed by our procession into Church to reenact Jesus jubilant procession into Jerusalem. Immaculate Conception Church However, by the time we hear the regular Gospel reading, jubilation has disappeared as we recall Jesus suffering and death. What happened between these two Gospel readings? Did the crowd do a complete turnaround? I don t think so. I think, rather, there was one type of people outside the city of Jerusalem and yet another type of people inside the city walls. You recall that the Processional Gospel began with the words, When Jesus and his disciples drew near to Jerusalem. It seems, then, that all this jubilation occurred outside of the city. These outsiders were excited about Jesus as the long-expected Savior...riding into the City of David on a colt...as predicted by the prophet Zechariah. Jesus, it appears, knows what He is doing and what lies ahead. He exercises control of the situation.telling His disciples that He needs a colt. You see, Jesus is going to Jerusalem and is well aware of exactly what is going to happen there! The people spread cloaks and branches on the road as they had done countless numbers of times before. They were anticipating the arrival of David s Kingdom. They see Jesus as linked to the glorious moment when the Davidlie Messiah would come. This all ends, however, during the Passion narrative when the crowds clamored loudly to Pontius Pilate: Crucify him! Recall, now, that this gospel passage begins with the words: The chief priests and the scribes were seeking a way to arrest Jesus by treachery and a way to put Jesus to death. We obviously have a different group of people here...the crowd inside Jerusalem certainly isn t the same crowd! It seems that the outsiders were the ones excited about Jesus. Think of their life-long desperation...they were the Gospel highway and by-way people...those who never got special places at table...never received invitations to fancy banquets...never had a place of honor in the temple and synagogue. They have already experienced how welcome their lot was with Jesus. In their minds there was finally someone from God to tell them that they are not forgotten; indeed, that God loves them! Jesus, the Galilean...the outsider one of their own the one who was raised up by God and given authority...this Jesus had at the same time recognized them, healed their afflictions, and forgiven their sins as well! Two simple questions for all of us this week...are we part of the outsiders who are seeking Jesus??... OR...Are we with the insiders...still trying to control him?? Although the Passion Narrative has the crowd that plays an important part in salvation history...we modern-day members of the crowd must continually re-read the Passion to reassure ourselves that God sent His only Son to die for everyone s sins...even the sins of the ones that put him to death...and yes...even for our sins! And we will be assured of this when we come back for Easter Mass next weekend...when we celebrate what has happened only one time in all history...death and resurrection...jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace bringing hope to all of us of life in eternal glory! May you have a special Holy Week filled with many blessings. Good Friday Living Stations of the Cross Next Friday, April 14th at 7:00pm teens and youth from the parish will conduct Living Stations of the Cross. Young people will be in character as they lead us in prayer and reflection in this sacred form of prayer. This will take the place of the 5:30pm time that we have been holding Stations of the Cross during Lent. We hope you can all join us. It is not the magnitude of our actions but the amount of love that is put into them that matters. Cayuga Ridge Communion Ministers Needed! Perhaps you have noticed two extra Communion ministers enter the sanctuary at the 8:30am Mass on Sundays. These ministers, after receiving the Precious Body & Blood of Christ, are then sent forth to take the Real Presence of Jesus to the Catholic residents at Cayuga Ridge, a nursing and rehabilitation facility. What a beautiful gift to take to others! It takes a number of volunteers to fulfill this ministry, and we are currently in need of more volunteers. Please prayerfully consider joining this sacred ministry, and if you are interested and available on Sunday mornings, please contact Erika Linsdell for further details. 273-6121 Reminder! We have low-gluten Hosts available for those in need for medical or allergy reasons. Please contact Fr. Chumo at fchumo@dor.org/273-6121 if you require these or come to the sacristy before Mass so arrangements can be made for you. If you have previously signed up or are willing to volunteer, we are getting ready to schedule training sessions. Please contact Sharon Woloszyn at 607-229-3882/sharonw2@twcny.rr.com From the Mouths of Babes While preparing to participate in the Stations of the Cross in kindergarten we went through each station while looking at some picture cards and talked about what was happening to Jesus. The students were very sad and voiced repeatedly about how mean people were being to Jesus. When we got to the end and talked about how happy everyone was about Him rising on Easter, one student said That is a great story! At this time, during Lent, it is important for us all to remember how great the story really is! You are invited to join Catholic Charities and the Peace Pins Project on Tuesday, April 25 for a screening of the recent documentary After Spring at Cinemopolis movie theater. With the Syrian conflict now in its sixth year, millions of people continue to be displaced. After Spring is the story of what happens next. By following two refugee families in transition and aid workers fighting to keep the camp running, viewers will experience what it is like to live in Zaatari, the largest camp for Syrian refugees. Tickets are $10 and must be preordered. Contact Catholic Charities at 272-5062 x 12 or LKonwinski@dor.org. Birthright of Ithaca would like to thank all who attended the baby shower for Birthright on April 2nd. Many beautiful items were given for our babies! We would also like to thank the Sisters of Mercy for hosting the shower and the Mercy Associates for the wonderful refreshments.
