Lesson 5: 5 The Gift and the Promise of Acts 2:38-39 39 2

The Gift and the Promise Acts 2:38 and 39 are two of the most important, but controversia, verses in the Bibe. (Acts 2:38 NKJV) Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and et every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you sha receive the gift of the Hoy Spirit. (Acts 2:39 NKJV) "For the promise is to you and to your chidren, and to a who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God wi ca." 3

The Gift and the Promise Some see Acts 2:38-39 as teaching that: A Christians of a times wi have miracuous abiities. Some Christians in the age of miraces woud have miracuous abiities. A Christians of a times wi have the indweing of the Hoy Spirit. Some say that the gift (2:38) and the promise (2:39) are the same thing; some say they are different. 4

From Lesson 1: Appying Good Study Methods to the Hoy Spirit Passages Let other usages by the same N.T. speaker or author have priority in defining his phrases and words. On same occasion or in same book. On another occasion or in another book. View each passage first as the origina hearers woud have heard it. Be very cautious about adopting an interpretation that the origina audience coud not have understood. 5

From Lesson 1: Appying Good Study Methods to the Hoy Spirit Passages Remember: The purpose of these essons is to give you information, so you can make an informed decision. The information presented today may suggest concusions that are different than ones you have previousy hed. Pease at east consider aternative views. 6

The Gift and the Promise We wi ook at: The gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 Connecting inks between Acts 2:38 and 2:39 The promise in Acts 2:39 7

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 PHRASE: GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT This phrase occurs ony twice. Acts 2:38 (which we are studying) Acts 10:45 (Peter at Corneius house) (Acts 10:44 NKJV) the Hoy Spirit fe upon a those who heard the word. (Acts 10:45-46 NKJV) And those of the circumcision who beieved were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Hoy Spirit had been poured out on the Genties aso. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. 8

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 PHRASE: GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT The phrase the gift of the Hoy Spirit refers to miracuous abiities in Acts 10:45. The same phrase is used in Acts 2:38 (same author in same book). We shoud consider that the phrase the gift of the Hoy Spirit might refer to miracuous abiities in Acts 2:38. 9

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 WORD: GIFT (dwreav)( Peter/Luke used dwreav (dorea) three other times. A refer to miracuous gifts. (Acts 8:20 NKJV) you thought that the gift of God coud be purchased (Acts 10:45 NKJV) the gift of the Hoy Spirit had been poured out on the Genties... (Acts 11:17 NKJV) God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we beieved We shoud consider that gift might refer to miracuous abiities in Acts 2:38. 10

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 EXPRESSION: RECEIVE + HOLY SPIRIT Luke uses the word receive with the Hoy Spirit five times. Acts 8:15-19 Peter and John among the Samaritans Acts 10:45-47 Peter at the house of Corneius Acts 19:2-6 Pau with the Ephesians Acts 2:33 the Apostes on Pentecost Acts 2:38 11

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 EXPRESSION: RECEIVE + HOLY SPIRIT Samaritans (Peter and John) (Acts 8:17 NKJV) Then they aid hands on them, and they received the Hoy Spirit. (Acts 8:18-19 NKJV) And when Simon saw that through the aying on of the apostes hands the Hoy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, Give me this power aso, that anyone on whom I ay hands may receive the Hoy Spirit. Receiving the H. S. refers to miracuous abiities. 12

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 EXPRESSION: RECEIVE + HOLY SPIRIT What does it mean to receive the Hoy Spirit? It is a figure of speech caed metonymy. 13

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 EXPRESSION: RECEIVE + HOLY SPIRIT Metonymy Definition It is from the Greek words meta, change, and onoma, name, hence a change of name; the empoyment of one name or word for another. Sec. 59. Metonymy of the Cause. By this figure the cause is stated whie the effect is intended. D. R. Dungan, Hermeneutics, pages 270-271. 14

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 EXPRESSION: RECEIVE + HOLY SPIRIT Metonymy Exampes The pen is mightier than the sword. They have Moses and the Prophets. Receive the Hoy Spirit. Cause Resut/Effect pen writings that infuence Moses and Prophets Scriptures they wrote Hoy Spirit Miracuous abiities thru H. S. Receiving the H. S. refers to miracuous abiities. 15

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 EXPRESSION: RECEIVE + HOLY SPIRIT House of Corneius (Peter) (Acts 10:45-47 NKJV) the Hoy Spirit fe upon a those who heard the word. the gift of the Hoy Spirit had been poured out For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, Can anyone forbid water, that these shoud not be baptized who have received the Hoy Spirit just as we have? Receiving the Hoy Spirit refers to the same thing as receiving the gift of the Hoy Spirit. Both expressions refer to miracuous abiities. 16

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 EXPRESSION: RECEIVE + HOLY SPIRIT Some Ephesians (Pau) (Acts 19:2 KJV/NKJV) He said unto them, Have ye received the Hoy Ghost/Spirit since ye beieved?... (Acts 19:5-6 KJV/NKJV)... they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Pau had aid his hands upon them, the Hoy Ghost/Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. Receiving the H. S. refers to miracuous abiities. 17

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 EXPRESSION: RECEIVE + HOLY SPIRIT On Pentecost (Tweve Apostes) (Acts 2:33 NKJV) having received from the Father the promise of the Hoy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. The promise invoved power. (Luke 24:49 NKJV) I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusaem unti you are endued with power from on high. They received power. (Acts 2:4 NKJV) they [the Apostes, sjc] were a fied with the Hoy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Receiving the H. S. refers to miracuous abiities. 18

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 EXPRESSION: RECEIVE + HOLY SPIRIT Luke uses receive with Hoy Spirit to refer to miracuous abiities uness Acts 2:38 is the singe exception. Acts Ref. Action Object Resuts 8:15-19 receive Hoy Spirit visibe signs 10:44-47 received Hoy Spirit tongues 19:2 received Hoy Spirit tong./proph. 2:33 received promise of H.S. tongues 2:38 received gift of H.S.??? 19

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 WORD: YOU You does not necessariy mean everyone in the audience. Exampe: John said that Jesus wi baptize you with the Hoy Spirit and fire. (Mat 3:11 NKJV) Woud everyone in that audience have miracuous abiities AND be condemned? Sometimes the word you is used to express a principe. Acts 2:39 puts imits on you in 2:38. 20

The Gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 SUMMARY The anguage of Acts 2:38 indicates that receiving the gift of the Hoy Spirit refers to miracuous abiities. The phrase gift of the Hoy Spirit means miracuous abiities the ony other time it is used (same writer/book). Peter and Luke aways use the Greek word transated gift to refer to miracuous abiities. Luke never uses receiving with Hoy Spirit to mean anything ese except miracuous abiities. 21

The Gift and the Promise We wi ook at: The gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 Connecting inks between Acts 2:38 and 2:39 The promise in Acts 2:39 22

Connecting Links Between Acts 2:38 and 2:39 WORD: FOR (BECAUSE) (Acts 2:38-39 NKJV) [38] [A] Repent, and [B] be baptized... and you sha receive [C] the gift of the Hoy Spirit. [39] For the promise is to Verse 39 is strongy inked to verse 38 with the word for (i.e., because). In verse 38, something is promised: he who does [A] and [B] wi receive [C]. Verse 39 expains WHO had been promised [C] (the gift of the Hoy Spirit ). 23

Connecting Links Between Acts 2:38 and 2:39 Those who who: [A] ose weight and [B] stop smoking (to increase ife span) [C] wi receive a discount on ife insurance THE PROMISE IS THE DISCOUNT Those who: [A] repent and [B] are baptized (to receive remission of sins) [C] wi receive the gift of the Hoy Spirit THE PROMISE IS THE GIFT OF THE H.S. 24

Connecting Links Between Acts 2:38 and 2:39 WORD: PROMISE The expanation of promises ties much of Peter s speech together. Peter recas Joe s promise that some woud have miracuous abiities (Acts 2:16-17). Peter expains that the miraces that the peope had seen that day were in fufiment of a promise of the Hoy Spirit (Acts 2:33). Peter promises the gift of the Hoy Spirit to some beievers (Acts 2:38). Then Peter expains the scope of that promise (Acts 2:39). 26

Connecting Links Between Acts 2:38 and 2:39 WORD: PROMISE Peter recas Joe s promise. (Acts 2:17 NKJV) 'And it sha come to pass in the ast days, says God, That I wi pour out of My Spirit on a fesh; Your sons and your daughters sha prophesy, Your young men sha see visions, Your od men sha dream dreams. (Acts 2:18 NKJV) And on My menservants and on My maidservants I wi pour out My Spirit in those days; And they sha prophesy. This woud be the promise on the mind of the audience when they heard Acts 2:38-39. 27

Acts 2:17-18 is the probem (not Acts 2:38-39). Acts 2:38-39 is the soution it imits the promise. 28

The Gift and the Promise We wi ook at: The gift of the Hoy Spirit in Acts 2:38 Connecting inks between Acts 2:38 and 2:39 The promise in Acts 2:39 29

The Promise in Acts 2:39 We wi ook at the scope of the promise. (Acts 2:39 NKJV) For the promise is to you and to your chidren, and to a who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God wi ca. We wi ook at: You Your chidren Those afar off Those who received a ca (reated to this specific Greek word). We wi et Scripture interpret Scripture. 30

The Promise in Acts 2:39 TO YOU You refers to some of those there. Reca: You does not necessariy mean everyone in that audience. Woud miracuous gifts reay be given to a fesh (Acts 2:17-18)? Likey Stephen and Phiip were there, who ater demonstrated miracuous abiities (received through the aying on of the Apostes hands). 31

TO YOUR CHILDREN The expression your chidren is used 7 times in the New Testament. The Promise in Acts 2:39 (Mat 7:11 and Luke 11:13 NKJV) you know how to give good gifts to your chidren (Eph 6:4 and Co. 3:21 NKJV) fathers, do not provoke your chidren to wrath (1 Cor 7:14 NKJV) For the unbeieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbeieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your chidren woud be uncean, but now they are hoy. Here, your chidren means one generation. 32

The Promise in Acts 2:39 TO YOUR CHILDREN The 6th passage is an interesting usage by Luke. (Luke 23:28 NKJV) But Jesus, turning to them, said, Daughters of Jerusaem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourseves and for your chidren. This is a reference to the destruction of Jerusaem that woud occur in A.D. 70, forty years ater in the ifetime of their chidren. Again, your chidren means one generation. 33

The Promise in Acts 2:39 TO YOUR CHILDREN In a 7 occurrences in the N.T. (incuding 3 usages by Luke), the phrase your chidren aways means ony the next generation. Uness Acts 2:39 is the ony exception. 34

The Promise in Acts 2:39 TO YOUR CHILDREN Interpreting your chidren in Acts 2:39 to mean ony the next generation fits the duration of the miracuous age. Chidren born to aduts in that audience (in A.D. 30) woud ive just past A.D. 100. Miracuous gifts woud end just past A.D. 100, soon after the ast Aposte died. Miracuous gifts woud ast for ony one more generation!! The promise of savation wi ast unti Christ returns. 35

The Promise in Acts 2:39 TO THOSE AFAR OFF The ony other N.T. passage referring to those afar off is Eph. 2:13-17. (Eph 2:13 NKJV) But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the bood of Christ. (Eph 2:14-16 NKJV) that He might reconcie them both to God in one body. (Eph 2:17 NKJV) you who were afar off and to those who were near. Jews (those near) and Genties (those afar off) were to equay share bessings in Christ. 36

The Promise in Acts 2:39 SUMMARY Acts 2:38-39 teaches that miracuous abiities were to be avaiabe for: You some Jews of that era ( you spoken to an audience can express a principe) Your chidren Jews of the next generation Even those afar off the Genties (e.g., those of Corneius house) 37

The Promise in Acts 2:39 NOTE THE PARALLELS Acts 2:17-19 Acts 2:38-39 a fesh Jews (you) and Genties (afar off) sons and daughters your chidren menservants and maidservants those who repent and are baptized pour out Spirit; prophesy receive gift of H. S. Miracuous abiities for some obedient beievers are ceary promised in 2:17-19. The promise is expained and imited in 2:38-39.

The Promise in Acts 2:39 THE CALLED There is one more phrase in Acts 2:39. (Acts 2:39 NKJV) For the promise is to you and to your chidren, and to a who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God wi ca. This singe phrase makes many peope: Reject the other (considerabe) evidence. Appy the passage to every Christian. We wi see how this specific word ca is used in the N.T. We wi et Scripture interpret Scripture. 39

The Promise in Acts 2:39 THE CALLED Ca can refer to becoming a Christian. (2 Th 2:14 NKJV) He caed you by our gospe, (2 Tim 1:9 NKJV) and caed us with a hoy caing (Heb 3:1 NKJV) partakers of the heaveny caing These are a from the Greek words kaevw (kaeo) and kh'si" (kesis). In Acts 2:39 is a different form of the Greek word: proskaevoma (proskaeoma). 40

HOLY SPIRIT REFERENCE SOURCE BOOK

AN APPOINTMENT proskaevoma (proskaeoma) 42

The Greek word proskaevoma is used in two ways. #1: PHYSICAL SUMMONS It means to ca to onesef; to summon to come to a physica pace. n (Acts 13:7 NKJV) This man caed for Barnabas and Sau and sought to hear the word of God. n (Acts 20:1 NKJV) Pau caed the discipes to himsef 43

The Greek word proskaevoma is used in two ways. #2: APPOINTMENT TO A TASK b. ca to a specia task or office (A Greek-Engish Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Eary Christian Literature Arndt and Gingrich) to ca to the performance of a thing, appoint, Ac. 13:2; 16:10 (Anaytica Greek Lexicon Mouton) 44

The Greek word proskaevoma is used in two ways. #2: APPOINTMENT TO A TASK It is used three times with this meaning (a Deity appointed). n (Acts 13:2 NKJV) Now separate to Me Barnabas and Sau for the work to which I have caed them. n (Acts 16:10 NKJV) go to Macedonia, concuding that the Lord had caed us to preach the gospe to them. (Acts 2:39 NKJV) the promise is to as many as the Lord our God wi ca. 45

The Promise in Acts 2:39 THE CALLED/APPOINTED Understanding the meaning of the word ca in as many as the Lord our God wi ca (Acts 2:39) is extremey important. This particuar Greek word is nowhere used to refer to the gospe ca. It is used to refer to an appointment to an office or specia function. 46

The Promise in Acts 2:39 THE CALLED/APPOINTED The phrase as many as the Lord our God wi ca does not broaden the promise to a beievers of a time. The phrase actuay imits the promise to those who were specificay appointed to have miracuous abiities. Those baptized with the Hoy Spirit Those upon whom an Aposte aid hands The phrase some feared woud support those who beieve in miraces today actuay proves that miraces were imited to the eary church era! 47

The Gift and the Promise PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER Acts 2:38-39 promised miracuous abiities were ony for speciayappointed beievers of that era. The context of Peter s speech and every key word and phrase suggested that meaning to the Pentecost audience. Was there any reason they woud have understood this part of the speech as describing some sort of indweing? We have et other Scriptures not men define the key words and phrases used. 48

The Gift and the Promise THE FLOW OF PETER S S SPEECH Peter addressed the miracuous events that had caused the gathering (1-13). He expained the passage in Joe that promised miracuous abiities (14-21). He procaimed that Jesus had poured out the miraces (22-37). Peter said that miracuous abiities were to be for some of that era (37-39). 49

The Gift and the Promise PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER Acts 2:38-39 promised miracuous abiities woud be avaiabe to speciayappointed beievers of that era. It is one of severa passages promising some obedient beievers of that era miracuous gifts through the Hoy Spirit. (Mark 16:16-18, Luke 24:49, Acts 1:8, Acts 2:16-18, Acts 2:32-33, Acts 2:38-39) The ony promise to beievers reative to the Hoy Spirit was miracuous gifts. The promised H. S. was miracuous abiities. 50
