Dear Friends, Today I would like to wish each and every one of our mothers a Happy Mothers Day. Edie Payne, one of our incredible mothers who is so passionate about church, will preach to us about God s infinite love and raising children serving God. Thank you Edie. Mothers are a gift from God, and every last person has one. So Mother's Day is really a holiday for everyone, a day for thanking God for his goodness in giving us mothers, and an occasion for letting that gratitude play itself out in tangible expressions of special honor. God bless all our mothers. I would like to give a shout out to 4 faith-filled mothers who bring their children every first Friday to adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for an hour. A life without challenges doesn t exist, and that is one reason a child needs a mother, Pope Francis stated. I owe my spirituality and vocation to priesthood to my own mother, who would wake me up every morning and send me to church to assist the priest at Mass. God bless her soul. On the 27 th of this month over 80 of our Teens will be confirmed at Christ the King. Bishop Garcia was scheduled to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. But then, we were notified a couple of weeks ago that Bishop Garcia will not be able to come to CTK due to his health condition. Most of you know the Bishop who was a great friend of Fr. Brian Joyce and others. On April 27, the diocese of Monterey announced that Bishop Garcia, 71, has been diagnosed with an early stage of Alzheimer s disease, following several weeks of not feeling well. This news is difficult to learn, but Bishop Garcia has great faith and a deep spiritual life to assist him in facing this diagnosis, (diocese statement). Please do keep Bishop Garcia in your prayers. In the absence of Bishop Garcia, our Vicar General Fr. George Mockel has accepted to confirm our candidates. Thank you Fr. George. This weekend, our Faith In Action (Social Justice) steering committee members will invite you to come to a discernment meeting to consider joining them in the mission of Jesus to love the poor and the vulnerable. In Deus Caritas Est (God Is Love), Pope Benedict XVI states that social charity is one of the three essential responsibilities of the Catholic Church: The Church's deepest nature is expressed in her three-fold responsibility: of proclaiming the word of God (kerygmamartyria), celebrating the sacraments (leitourgia), and exercising the ministry of charity (diakonia). These duties presuppose each other and are inseparable. For the Church, charity is not a kind of welfare activity, which could equally well be left to others, but is a part of her nature, an indispensable expression of her very being. God calls all Christians to be saints not plastic statues of saints, but real people who make time for prayer and who show loving care for others in the simplest gestures, Pope Francis said in his new document on holiness. "Do not be afraid of holiness. It will take away none of your energy, vitality or joy," the pope wrote in Gaudete et Exsultate (Rejoice and be glad), his apostolic exhortation on "the call to holiness in today's world." "Our defense of the innocent unborn, for example, needs to be clear, firm and passionate for at stake is the dignity of a human life, which is always sacred," the pope wrote. "Equally sacred, however, are the lives of the poor, those already born, the destitute, the abandoned and the underprivileged, the vulnerable infirm and elderly exposed to covert euthanasia." Faith in action is love, and love in action is service. By transforming that faith into living acts of love, we put ourselves in contact with God Himself, with Jesus our Lord. Mother Teresa Paulson The Ascension of the Lord First Reading: Acts 1:1-11 Today s passage takes us back to the beginning verses of the Acts of the Apostles and sets forth the themes that Luke is going to develop throughout this, the longest book of the New Testament. His major theme is the role of the Holy Spirit, who enables the apostles to be effective witnesses to Jesus. The Holy Spirit is mentioned 57 times in the Acts of the Apostles. Second Reading: Ephesians 4:1-13 Today s passage from Ephesians was chosen because of its reference to Jesus ascent to heaven, which is contrasted with his descent to the dead. Early Christians believed that those who died before the coming of Jesus awaited redemption in a shadowy existence described here as the lower regions of the earth. It is our Christian tradition that immediately after his death, Jesus went to these people to announce that they had been saved. PARISH STAFF CONTACTS Fr.
