Last weekend was a heavy one and we continue to see many things about the sex abuse scandal in the paper. It is important that we live in reality. That being said, we must be very careful not to become fascinated by evil! If you find that your thoughts are more fixed on sin than Jesus Christ than Satan is winning the battle! Personally, I am so grateful that this week I was able to attend the International Fraternity of Priest Retreat at St. Paul of the Cross on the South Side. My time there renewed my focus on Jesus Christ! Jesus also revealed more of who I am and brought about beautiful healing. Over the coming weeks I am going to share some of the profoundly beautiful wisdom that Deacon Keating shared with us on retreat. May our hearts be fixed on Christ Jesus our Lord no matter what the storm around us. In Christ, Fr. Levi ANGER S OFFSPRING As long as anger lives, she continues to be the fruitful mother of many unhappy children. St. John Climacus MISSION VISIT Next Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19 Sister Joanne Lammers and Sister Sara Aldridge of the Sisters of St. Francis missioners will be speaking at all the Masses. The Sisters serve those who are poor, with foreign missions in Mexico and home missions in Appalachia. In remote areas of Mexico they work to build faith communities where there are no priest for regular Sunday Masses. Sisters also give children living in extreme poverty the opportunity to obtain an education plus emergency needs of food and medicine. Appalachian ministries include faith development and pastoral care, adult literac, and emergency outreach of food, clothing, and shelter for the poor. Please help make a difference in the lives of people suffering from poverty with your prayers and financial support SAVE THIS WEEKEND Holy Apostles Parish Women s Retreat St. Paul s Retreat Center Friday, Sept. 28th at 5 PM to Sunday, Sept. 30th at 12 NOON Saturday, Sept. 29 only is also Available For more information call Jean Beck.. 412-881-9283 Mary Ann Major. 412-882-4883 So Be Imitators of God, As Beloved Children, and Live in Love The call of Saint Paul in his letter to the Ephesians to be imitators of God gives us pause to ponder what we expect of God and what we should expect of ourselves and others. Don t we expect God to be patient, compassionate, loving, merciful and wise? Don t we trust that God will provide for our needs, bestow peace in our hearts and be a source of courage and strength? Saint Paul, then, urges that our lives reflect these virtues and more so that others will know that God is alive in the world. The context of this responsibility of faith is that we do it as beloved children of God, as beloved sisters and brothers. While family life is not always easy or without its challenges, the family is the most fundamental structure of love and support in our world. We seek to reflect the love of God as husbands and wives, parents and children, aunts and uncles. And as a family of faith this love must flow through us for others as we build up the Kingdom of God. May our efforts On Mission for The Church Alive! inspire us to live in love as a sisters and brothers in God our Father. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

Fr Beiting always said, A tired volunteer is a happy volunteer. Words so true! As disciples of Jesus it is our duty to spread the Good Word, to show Jesus in all we do, and to serve with humility. These were the guiding principles that Fr. Beiting lived by during his more than 60 years of serving God s people in the heart of Appalachia. As difficult as things got, as heart-breaking as the problems people brought to him, and as financially straining as serving and helping the people was, Fr. Beiting never gave up and always kept his duties as a disciple in perspective. Even as he was aging and becoming physically challenged, the people of the mountains were his priority. He initiated the FBAMC so that these people would not be forgotten. The FBAMC is meant to help our nation s most needy, loving, humble and forgotten people for many years to come. Most importantly, Fr. Beiting showed that above all we must have faith in God that he will provide and care for us even in the worst of times. By going to Kentucky for four years now, I've discovered the satisfaction of embracing the things God's called from me. I'll never be the one to charismatically preach scripture to others like some of our missionaries. But I sell a mean hoagie to support them all. And I can be present to those high school and college kids who ride with us back in the hollers to gather the beautiful children of Martin County Kentucky for daily vacation Bible school.. THE SYLVESTER AND RITA KRISS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP St John Vianney, whose feast day the Church recently celebrated, was known as the Cure of Ars, which means Parish Priest of Ars. Ars was located in France. and was considered the worst parish in the Diocese when John Vianney came there after his ordination. The Book "The Sermons of the Cure of Ars" was originally published as Sermons de Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney pauvre cure d'ars by Le Club du Livre Chretien, Paris. It was more recently published as The Sermons of the Cure of Ars, translated by Una Morrisey by Roman Catholic Books, A Division of Catholic Media Apostolate, Harrison New York. It has Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur. It is a remarkable book with over 60 of St John Vianney's sermons. As it says on the back cover of this book "The Cure often had to exhort with a sternness that is surprising to the more serene image we have of this holy man. Yet, we know that in his lifetime Ars became a model parish with thousands journeying there to see him, to hear him, and to seek his advice in the confessional. This change did not occur because he watered down his message or because he tailored it to the times. His sternness, some may call it severe, was just the message needed to bring the message of God to these people. Some of the titles of these sermons in this book are "The Dreadful State of the Lukewarm Soul", "The World is Everything, God is Nothing", "Oh, Everyone Says So" and "If Man Knew His Relgion". I give this book Five Beards out of Five Beards, because it contains the words and advice of a Saintly man, who cared about his flock. He concluded his sermons with the phrase "This is what I desire of you" because he cared for his flock. I am just your Deacon, so you are not my flock, but I care for you and only recommend books or movies that are helpful for you and your salvation. Jesus in our hearts... Forever! The Scholarships are awarded on the basis of three criteria: Academic Excellence, Devotion to the Parish and Need. The intent of the donors is for the grants to be given to Catholic Elementary and High School Students. To apply for the scholarship parents will need to provide a copy of their PSAS form, a photocopy of the student s last year end grade report, and a letter detailing family involvement in the parish. Forms for the scholarship are available in the Parish Office. All information submitted will be held in the strictest confidence. The Scholarships will be awarded by an anonymous committee. The committee will not know the names of the applicants. They will have only the information applying to each applicant. THE DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR THE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IS August 13, 2018 EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS To the HOMEBOUND Please call or email Mary Spinabelli with information on the parishioner's who you are visiting. Hospitality Ministry When someone comes to visit you at your home, do you let them come in on their own and just continue with what you re doing? Do they walk into the room without you acknowledging them? If you were lying on your couch and your guest wanted to sit there, would you think, too bad, I was here first and not sit up to give them room? I highly doubt whether your guests would be interested in visiting you again. Now, think about church. How many of us sit in our same pews every week (usually on the end) and grumble if we have to move in to let a latecomer have a place to sit? Do we smile at that person or resent them for taking our seat? Do we only greet the people we know and ignore everyone else? We have a lot of new people coming to our masses are we making them feel welcome? Years ago when my family moved, we weren t sure which parish to join, so we attended mass at several churches over a period of a few months. Ultimately, we chose the parish where people smiled and greeted us. We felt accepted and welcome even before we registered. This past weekend, Fr. Steve talked about an upcoming new Hospitality Ministry. There will be parishioners at each mass greeting people as they enter the church. Father invited us to start doing this right away, even before the official ministry is in place. We can be ambassadors for Holy Apostles Parish by being warm and friendly to visitors and newcomers. Think about participating in this new ministry. It really doesn t take much you ll be at one of the masses anyway! Very soon, we may be seeing people from Holy Angels and St. Sylvester shopping for a place to worship after the new mass schedules are in effect. Who knows? We ourselves might be looking for a new place to attend mass. Wouldn t you be more inclined to choose the one where the parishioners made you feel comfortable? Saturday September 8, 2018 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM If you have attended the Festival in the past, you have witnessed that spending time with Jesus in praise and worship is an unbelievable experience. If you haven t attended in the past, it would be good to consider joining the community of faithful believers to praise Jesus and worship Him and accept Him in your life. This month Father Mike Ackerman will be back to preside over our service. The Festival of Praise is an excellent way to thank Jesus for all the blessings He has bestowed on us and to help us acknowledge that Jesus is aware of our troubles and that He is alive within us. This a journey that brings peace and power for living. Check out the Festival of Praise page in the Holy Apostles Parish website for information about the upcoming service. There you will find many pictures and videos of previous services. Our Praise Band Repertoire now includes more than forty beautiful songs and continues to grow monthly. Many of these songs can be viewed and listened to on You Tube as performed by the recording l of Praise artist. THE ROSARY CLUB St Pope John Paul II said "The Rosary is my favorite prayer." St Francis de Sales said "The greatest method of praying is to pray the Rosary. St Louis de Monfort said "Never will anyone who says the Rosary every day be lead astray. This is a statement that I would gladly sign in my own blood." Deacon Tim is starting a Rosary Club. The Rosary Club will meet at 7 pm on the First Friday of every month to say the Rosary at St Albert the Great. The next meeting of the Rosary Club will be on Friday, September 7 at 7 pm DTT at St Albert the Great Church Father of Mercy During this time of transition, help us grow in unity with Holy Angels Parish and St. Sylvester Parish Grant us wisdom and willingness To understand how our parishes will become stronger and more vibrant in fulfilling the Mission of the Church. Assist us in opening our arms to welcome Others as we continue to journey On Mission for The Church Alive1 Help us, O Lord, to trust in the future you have planned for us. This we ask through Christ Our Lord. Amen

THE DEACON S CORNER Deacon s Corner Our Nar-Anon meetings are every Monday. We hope to continue to grow our family and provide support for those who are dealing daily with the insanity of addiction; those who are friends or family members of an addict. As we have stated, these meetings are to provide input to those who are suffering and wish to learn through the experiences live by others. Remember we maintain anonymity. Speak if you want or just listen, but please come. Nar-Anon website: http://www.nar-anon.org Every Monday, 6:30 pm In the St. Albert Chapel area 3198 Schieck St., Baldwin, PA A man came to church one Sunday. As he entered he left his hat on. The usher commented to him that it was proper for him to remove his hat in church. But he went on in and left his hat on. Well a couple of kind ladies setting behind him gently told him that really, he should remove his hat in church, but again, he left it on. The ushers informed the priest of the man and his refusal to remove his hat. So, as he left the priest confronted him and ask why he had left his hat on. He replied: You know, I have been coming to this church now for 5 years. Up to now, no one has ever spoken to me until today. I think I will keep the hat on. Since ancient times good hospitality has been the Christian way of welcoming someone into our community. It is even suggested that the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah came because of their inhospitable actions. I do not believe that we are nearly that bad, but even if you are not of a mind to be part of the new ministry of hospitality, we need to make every effort to be a true and loving Christian in the way we greet and welcome all people to Mass and our worship services. Oh yes, smile too. (My thanks to the parishioner that shared the story of the man and the hat.)
