GOD S WORK of SORROW and ASSURANCE: L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. L: Our help is in the name of the LORD, C: who made heaven and earth. L: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord who could stand? C: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore, You are feared. Page 1

L: Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness, and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me a sinner. C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. L: Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy Church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen (Face the entrance and focus on Jesus). OLD TESTAMENT: Joshua 24:1-2a, 14-18 ESV See Below / Pew Bible Page 368 / Own Bible 1 Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God. 2 And Joshua said to all the people 14 Now fear the LORD and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. 16 Then the people answered, Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods, 17 for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed. 18 And the LORD drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God! PSALM 34:12-22 ESV See Below / Front of LSB / Own Bible L: What man is there who desires life C: and loves many days, that he may see good? L: Keep your tongue from evil C: and your lips from speaking deceit. L: Turn away from evil and do good; C: seek peace and pursue it. L: The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous C: and his ears toward their cry. L: The face of the LORD is against those who do evil, C: to cut off the memory of them from the earth. L: When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears C: and delivers them out of all their troubles. L: The LORD is near to the brokenhearted C: and saves the crushed in spirit. L: Many are the afflictions of the righteous, C: but the LORD delivers him out of them all. L: He keeps all his bones; C: not one of them is broken. L: Affliction will slay the wicked, C: and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. L: The LORD redeems the life of his servants; C: none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned. A: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. EPISTLE: Ephesians 5:6-21 ESV See Below / Pew Bible Page 1822 / Own Bible This will be read during today s sermon! ALLELUIA and VERSE: See the words below / LSB 156 Al-le-lu ia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of e-ter-nal life. Al-le-lu ia, al-le-lu ia. HOLY GOSPEL: John 6:51-69 ESV See Below / Pew Bible Page 1658 / Own Bible L: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the sixth chapter. C: Glory to You, O LORD. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he Page 3

will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. 52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53 So Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever. 59 Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum. 60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, This is a hard saying; who can listen to it? 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe. (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father. 66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, Do you want to go away as well? 68 Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God. L: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. HYMN OF THE DAY: Awake, O Sleeper, Rise from Death See the words below or LSB 697 1 Awake, O sleeper, rise from death, And Christ shall give you light; So learn His love, its length and breadth, Its fullness, depth, and height. 2 To us on earth He came to bring From sin and fear release, To give the Spirit s unity, The very bond of peace. 1984 Augsburg Publishing House. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, no. 100012222. SERMON: Be Wise Ephesians 5:6-21 ESV 1. Check the Words: 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words [ones that are meaningless, without result], for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience [thus upon unbelievers]. 7 Therefore do not become partners [sharers, partakers] with them; 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord [people who guide others by the way you live]. 2. See the Sharp Contrast: Walk as children of light [guiding others in how Page 4

you live] 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern [discovering] what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them [thus express disapproval of them]. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light [which happens as we express disapproval], it becomes visible [so people see it for what it really is], 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead [from being spiritually dead], and Christ will shine on you. 4. Be Filled With the Spirit: 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery [which is the opposite of what the Lord desires], but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart [the center and source of your inner life], 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence [respect] for Christ. 3. Be Wise In How You Live: Because of the extreme differences between total darkness and brilliant light, empty words and saving truth, dead in sin and alive in Christ, the torments of hell and the joys of heaven 15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. HYMN OF THE DAY: Awake, O Sleeper, Rise from Death See the words below or LSB 697 3 Then walk in love as Christ has loved, Who died that He might save; With kind and gentle hearts forgive As God in Christ forgave. 4 For us Christ lived, for us He died, And conquered in the strife; Awake, arise, go forth in faith, And Christ shall give you life. OFFERTORY: Let Us Pray A: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen. Page 5

CREEDAL HYMN: We All Believe in One True God See the words below / LSB 953 1. We all confess the Holy Ghost, Who from both in truth proceeds, Who sustains and comforts us In all trials, fears, and needs. Blessèd, holy Trinity, Praise forever be to Thee! Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH: Let Us Pray After Each Petition: L: LORD, in Your mercy. C: Hear our prayer. Conclusion: L: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen. OFFERING: Let us honor the Lord! OFFERTORY BEFORE COMMUNING PRAYER: Front of LSB THE SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT PRAYER FOR RIGHT RECEPTION OF THE LORD S SUPPER: Let Us Pray L: O LORD, heavenly Father, the lamp of Your Word searches the dark corners of our souls and finds nothing but sin and every evil. C: We examine ourselves and find that in us that is, in our flesh there dwells no good thing. L: We repent in dust and ashes. C: We come to Your Table on our knees, O Jesus. L: Grant that we, in faith, rightly partake of Your body and blood. C: Amen. LORD S PRAYER: L: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: A: Our Father who art in heaven THE WORDS OF OUR LORD: On Good Friday PAX DOMINI: The Peace of the Lord L: The peace of the Lord be with you always! C: Amen. AGNUS DEI: Lamb of God See the words below / LSB 550 Your only Son, no sin to hide, But You have sent Him from Your side To walk upon this guilty sod, And to become the Lamb of God. O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, I love the holy Lamb of God! O wash me in His precious blood, My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God. Page 6

C: Amen. POST-COMMUNION HYMN: Sent Forth by God's Blessing See the words below / LSB 643 Sent forth by God s blessing, Our true faith confessing, The people of God from His dwelling take leave.
