Al, Pastor The Immaculate Conception, according to the teaching of the Catholic Church, was the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the womb of her mother, Saint Anne, free from original sin by virtue of the foreseen merits of her son Jesus Christ. The Catholic Church teaches that Mary was conceived by normal biological means, but God acted upon her soul (keeping her "immaculate") at the time of her conception. Although the belief that Mary was sinless and conceived immaculate has been widely held since Late Antiquity, the doctrine was not dogmatically defined until 1854, by Pope Pius IX in his papal bull Ineffabilis Deus. The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8; in many Catholic countries, it is a holy day of obligation or patronal feast. The Spirit of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) The spirit of the congregation is, in the tradition of St. Alphonsus Liguori, the spirit of Jesus Christ the Redeemer. This spirit impels the sisters to offer themselves in joyful oblation to God by their transformation in Christ and their incorporation into his redeeming mission through the Church. Currently, St. William Convent is the home of ten Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. At one time, St. William School was staffed by several Sisters of IHM. Due to changes and closing of our school, Sisters were assigned to different parishes in the Archdiocese. As we celebrate the Feast of the IHM Sisters on December 8, the Parish Community of St. William extends our heartfelt gratitude to all Sisters for their magnificent job in the past and their excellent ministry to St. William church and also teach English to adults at St. Bernard s Language school.
