Mass Intention _ àâüzç VÉÜÇxÜ What does it mean to have a Mass "offered" for someone? An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: for example, in thanksgiving, for the intentions of another person (such as on a birthday), or, as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. [However], one must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit ones soul. Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical "Mirae caritatis" (1902) beautifully elaborated this point and emphasized the connection between the communion of saints with the Mass: -Father William Saunders Readings for the Week Monday Holy Guardian Angels Zec 8:1-8; Ps 102:16-18, 19-21, 29 and 22-23; Mt 18:1-5, 10 Tuesday Zec 8:20-23; Ps 87:1b-3, 4-5, 6-7; Lk 9:51-56 Wednesday Saint Francis of Assisi Neh 2:1-8; Ps 137:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6; Lk 9:57-62 Thursday Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, Priest Neh 8:1-4a, 5-6, 7b-12; Ps 19:8, 9, 10, 11; Lk 10:1-12 Friday Saint Bruno, Priest; Blessed Marie Rose Durocher, Virgin Bar 1:15-22; Ps 79:1b-2, 3-5, 8, 9; Lk 10:13-16 Saturday Our Lady of the Rosary Bar 4:5-12, 27-29; Ps 69:33-35, 36-37; Lk 10:17-24 Sunday Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Is 5:1-7; Ps 80:9, 12, 13-14, 15-16, 19-20; Phil 4:6-9; Mt 21:33-43 "The grace of mutual love among the living, strengthened and increased by the sacrament of the Eucharist, flows, especially by virtue of the Sacrifice [of the Mass], to all who belong to the communion of saints. For the communion of saints is simply... the mutual sharing of help, atonement, prayers and benefits among the faithful, those already in the heavenly fatherland, those consigned to the purifying fire, and those still making their pilgrim way here on earth. These all form one city, whose head is Christ, and whose vital principle is love. Faith teaches that although the august Sacrifice can be offered to God alone, it can nevertheless be celebrated in honor of the saints now reigning in Heaven with God, who has crowned them, to obtain their intercession for us, and also, according to apostolic tradition, to wash away the stains of those brethren who died in the Lord but without yet being wholly purified." -Pope Leo XII Each time we gather for Mass, we hear the priest say in similar words, Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy; welcome them into the light of your face. Therefore, at every Mass, we remember those who have gone before us, whether or not their name is specifically mentioned during the Mass. We entrust their souls to God and know that he, in his infinite wisdom, will mercifully receive them into eternal life. It is nice to remember someone by name at a Mass but our prayers for them and for all who have died are received just as equally at every Mass, whether or not the name is specifically mentioned.
