The disciples still had so much to learn! So do we! At irst, in their response to Jesus questions about who he is, the disciples mention only prophets. No surprise: this is how their contemporaries would interpret this itinerant Rabbi. Throughout their history prophets had guided the Jewish people in the ways of God. Prophets had called them back to covenantal idelity. Prophets had warned the Jewish people about impending punishment when they strayed from God through being stiff-necked, self-reliant, and unfaithful. How much more did the disciples have to learn about who Jesus is! They could not be prepared for the wholly new that Jesus is the new Adam, the new Moses. They could not be prepared for the wholly new covenant Jesus was offering through who he was. They could not be prepared for the new church, the new beloved people they themselves would become. Indeed, Jesus is a prophet, but so much more: he is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Nothing short of a revelation by the heavenly Father could make this known to Peter. Nothing short of a revelation by the community of believers who acknowledge Jesus as the Christ and remain ever faithful to his saving mission could continue to make this known even to our day. The church is a luidity of persons cemented together by the common bond of faithfully living the mystery of who Christ is. And who we are in him. Today s gospel challenges us to keep before our eyes an understanding of church as the community of believers who constantly make present the risen Christ. Jesus makes a vital connection between his self-identity and the reality of the church. The church rests in Jesus, derives from who he is and his ministry, and is built up only by our own participation in the identity of Jesus. The church is the Body of Christ made visible in the community of believers who carry forward Jesus saving mission. The church will prevail because Jesus saving mission will prevail to the end of time when all will be gathered back to the Father. Jesus is doing a wonderful thing in this gospel he is telling us that by being church we participate in his identity (as children of God) and his saving mission. Nothing will prevail against this church so long as we keep ourselves turned toward Jesus and remember that our own identity as members of the Body of Christ is bound up in who Jesus is: the Christ, the Son of the living God. Fr. Jace REJOICE AND BE GLAD BE A ROCK Peter s history as a follower or friend of Jesus is a bit spotty. It might be natural to wonder if Jesus, in giving him the keys to the kingdom, didn t feel a bit like a parent giving a teenager the keys to the family car. But it was at the moment when God s power and presence broke through everything else to raise up Peter s great profession of faith in Christ as Messiah that Jesus chose to establish the bond between the loving, forgiving mercy of heaven and our vocation to be witnesses of that love, mercy, and forgiveness on earth. Like any parent, Jesus no doubt foresaw the failings, the irresponsible maneuvers or impaired senses, the collisions that the church would be headed for. But, most importantly, he also saw us at that moment as God prefers to see us: capable of manifesting great faith, with a willingness to remain at the feet of Christ to understand what it truly means to be Messiah and Christ. As the letter to the Romans points out to us today, we have not known the mind or the wisdom of God, but God knows us and still chooses to manifest the reign of justice, joy, beauty, and peace through us. Let this be our vocation. Let us always strive to be solid ground on which the church of Jesus Christ can be founded and on which it can continue to be built. J. S. Paluch Co.

We were tasked with awareness and prevention of online solicitation, human traf icking, suicide & abuse in teenagers. School administrations are asked to select twenty students to participate in the program. Two volunteers are assigned to each school and meet with students once per month to guide a discussion regarding one of the aforementioned topics. These are not your average school lectures! We want the students engaged and processing the information to build con idence in their knowledge and ability to tackle these situations outside of the classroom. We assist them to plan and implement an awareness day at their school. Each lesson has been carefully researched and written by a team of individuals including a nationally recognized educator and curriculum specialist, a licensed counselor, a nurse practitioner & a high school teacher. Our goal is to create a replicable program that can be implemented in other communities in our state. We host regular focus groups with area teens to continually improve and update our program to meet the ever changing needs and knowledge gaps in our youth. Our volunteers have been carefully screened and trained on the content, delivery method, and how to handle disclosures of abuse. They have all passed a thorough background check. As we grow, we hope to host parent nights at our schools to give parents/guardians the opportunity to learn some of the information their students are learning. We are proud to have the support of the Calcasieu Parish School Board, Of ice of Juvenile Justice Service, Family & Youth Counseling, District Attorney John DeRossier & Senator Ronnie Johns. If you are interested in registering your child, please go to our website, truthfactslies.org and complete the registration form. High School Parents Apostolic/Service Hours @ SMdP St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church often utilizes the apostolic/service hours volunteer programs with students from St. Louis Catholic High School and Barbe High School. SLCHS and some of Barbe s service groups require students to work volunteer community hours in order to teach the sel lessness of being the hands and feet of Jesus Christ. If you have a high school student that would like to direct all or some of their apostolic/service hours to SMdP, please call the church of ice and ask about possible projects that can ful ill their requirement - 478-3845.
