PASTOR S COLUMN A LOOK BACK 38 YEARS All of us have certain dates that are important to us. May 31 is one of those days for me. I was ordained a priest May 31, 1975. That was certainly a joyous, life-changing day in my life. I find it hard to believe that 38 years have passed since that Saturday morning at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newark. That day 12 men, including me, were ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Peter Gerety. I thought I would use this column to share my journey as a priest these past 38 years. SAINT CATHARINE PARISH My first assignment as a priest was to Saint Catharine Parish in Glen Rock where I served from 1975 to 1981. My six years at that parish set the path for the years that would follow. That was due in large part to my first pastor, Monsignor Richard Holmes, now deceased. I distinctly remember my first staff meeting. Monsignor gave me a long list of duties that included working with the high school youth program and being responsible for every aspect of the liturgy including directing all the liturgical ministers. Monsignor did not ask me what areas of ministry I wanted to work in, he told me. I would never have chosen working with high school students, but the Church is not a democracy. Yet by telling me to work in the youth program he helped me to discover a talent that I did not know I had and a talent that would lead me to my second assignment. And his directing me to work in the area of liturgy would lead me to still another assignment. Those second and third assignments would prepare me for what the Lord had in store for the future. My first assignment in Glen Rock helped me to learn that God often speaks to us through those he places over us. I firmly believe that God spoke to me through Monsignor when gave me my parish responsibilities. During my six years at Saint Catharine s I met John Chadwick, Bill Sheridan, Tom Nydegger, and Jim Ferry. They were in high school and grammar school at the time. All four were eventually ordained to the priesthood. I like to think that God used me in some way to influence their vocations. SAINT JOSEPH PARISH During Lent of 1981, I was asked to come and help with confessions at Saint Joseph Church in Oradell. That was the first time I ever set foot in the parish or for that matter came to Oradell. I think that Route 17 is like the Great Wall of China. People on the east side of 17 have no idea there is life on the west side, and vice versa. TRINITY SUNDAY, MAY 26, 2013 3 After hearing confessions, I ran into Monsignor Mort Smith who was then at the parish. He had heard of my work with teenagers and was interested in knowing if I would be willing to be assigned to Saint Joseph Parish to work with the young folks here. His question came at the right time, or should I say at God s time, since my assignment at Saint Catharine s was coming to an end. By the end of June 1981, I was here at Saint Joseph Parish. As I promised, I began to work with the teenagers and we started TARGET, the parish high school youth program. During my 12 years here that youth program developed and grew. Working with high school kids made me more comfortable with myself and other people. While I ministered to the teenagers, they truly ministered to me and helped me to grow in my faith and in my ability to share that faith with others. Also during my time here, I continued working in the area of liturgy and was invited to assist the Archdiocesan Office of Divine Worship by helping to train readers/lectors and ministers of Holy Communion. Something that I am still doing. THE WORSHIP OFFICE In 1993, my work with the Worship Office, led Archbishop McCarrick to appoint me director of that office. Once again, I felt the influence of Monsignor Holmes for he had said, work with liturgy and work with the youth. As Director of the Office of Worship, I was invited to teach the practical aspects of liturgy at the seminary and some courses in preaching. OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA PARISH In 1995, Archbishop McCarrick assigned me as pastor of Our Lady of Czestochowa in downtown Jersey City. It is amazing how God works. My ministry with teenagers and my work with liturgy was the perfect preparation for my first pastorate. During my 14 years there, the parish became a young adult parish with most members between 20 and 45 years of age. As I would say, the parishioners were just older teenagers. During my time there I was confirmed in my belief that good liturgy forms Catholics and transforms lives. I know the liturgy has done that in my life as a priest. SAINT JOSEPH PARISH ONCE MORE In 2010, after a sabbatical of one year, Archbishop Myers assigned me to Saint Joseph Parish as pastor. I followed Father Reilly, with whom I had worked from 1975 to 1980 at St. Catharine Parish and here at Saint Joseph Parish from 1989 to 1993. Looking back, I am so thankful to God for allowing me to serve him and his people as a priest. I am also grateful to the holy people I have met. The Church is truly filled with good people who strive to live the Gospel with faithfulness and love people like you! Love, Father Tom Iwanowski

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint John 16:12-15. In this Sunday s Gospel, we are told about the Holy Trinity. In the beginning there was God. He is the Creator. He made the earth and all of the animals and people. But God wanted to reach out and touch his people in a special way. So on Christmas Day, he sent his Son to us as a baby, as a human being. Jesus would grow up and walk among the people and show them how they were to live and teach them the ways of God. When Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead, he returned to his friends, but he knew that one day he would have to leave them to be with his Father in Heaven. So he asked God to send the Holy Spirit to be with his friends, to guide them to do what is right and give them wisdom so they could continue to teach the people. The Holy Spirit would remain with them forever. The Holy Spirit lives in each of us and guides us through life to say Yes to doing the right thing and to say No to doing evil things. Did you ever see a three leaf clover or a shamrock? We see them on Saint Patrick s Day. It is a leaf with three leaves but only one stem. That is a reminder of the Holy Trinity. God the Father, his Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit the three are One God. We remember the Holy Trinity each time we make the Sign of the Cross and say, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee MISSION OF THE WEEK This weekend is Memorial Day Weekend. It is a weekend when we honor the soldiers who have died so that the people of our country can live safely and find happiness. On Monday, say the following prayer: Dear Lord, we humbly ask your protection for all our men and women in the military service. Amen 6
