From the Desk of Deacon Peter "Unless a grain of wheat " This is a parable of Jesus that is another warning to his disciples that his own death is not only imminent, but necessary for his teaching to become fruitful. There is more than a grain of truth in this parable. Because of Jesus' death and resurrection, the disciples are filled with the strength of the Holy Spirit and lose their fear. They even suffer martyrdom for their belief in what they learned from Jesus. Not only the disciples, but their followers also frequently became martyrs for the same cause. More important, many more joined the Followers of the Way and eventually became known as Christians. Today there are Christians spread throughout the world! How could Jesus have explained to the disciples what his death and resurrection would mean to the world in any other way? We see the meaning of this parable now, but how could Jesus have described what was going to happen any better? ST. SAVED BY GOD S LOVE Because the people broke the old covenant, God promised a new covenant, not in the blood of oxen and other animals, but in the blood of the Son, Jesus Christ. This new covenant, foreseen from afar by Jeremiah and the prophets, was not to be engraved on stone, or written on paper, but carved on our hearts, so that we might know God intimately. Not by keeping many laws are we to be saved, but by the love of God, living and real in our hearts through the sacrifice of Christ. Our Eucharist is the pledge of that indwelling of Christ, and of our response of praise and thanksgiving to God for the mercy, love, and kindness shown to us in forgiving our sins and cleansing our hearts of everything evil. God issues this invitation to intimacy by offering us the chance to have our sufferings transformed into the perfect love of the Savior, who first loved us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Edward Hays, an artist and an author, has written many books to help us to grow in out Spirituality and Faith. For our continuing book study, we have chosen a book of his parables. Parables are stories that have an obvious meaning, but may have many different stories buried within, kind of like a two sided jig saw puzzle. When the puzzle is completed, it shows a complete picture; but when the puzzle is turned over, it shows a completely different picture! This book contains 22 parables that we will read and discuss, so we can learn how to read the obvious and the hidden meanings of the stories. It will help us to understand the parables we are used to hearing in the New Testament.
