The descriptions by early historians what the first settlers found here are magnificent and startling. From Raccoon Creek to "Makles" Creek, now known as Mantua Creek-- which is the land in this precise area--we are told that tobacco grew luxuriously. There were great quantities of walnuts, chestnuts, peaches, cypresses, mulberries, fish trees, and many other rare trees. John Fenwick left England in 1675 before the division of East and West Jersey occurred, sailing on the ship Griffith with a group of Quakers who settled at Salem Co.. William Penn did not leave England until seven years later. In 1677 and 1678 five other vessels with 800 emigrants, mostly Quakers, arrived. A large number disembarked at Raccoon Creek near Swedesboro and others proceeded farther north and settled at Burlington, originally called Beverly, then Budlington, and finally Burlington. Friends Meetings were held in Burlington in 1677 in tents. A Quaker Meeting House was built in Salem in 1680, and in Burlington in 1682. At this point proprietary interests in West Jersey were to a large extent in Quaker hands. The type of government which developed in all of New Jersey was extremely liberal. In fact it was considered later by the Crown of England to be revolutionary. The capital of West Jersey was fixed at Burlington, and an Assembly was convened there in 1681. These early New Jersey colonial governments, asserted, 100 years before the American Revolution, substantially the same principle of sovereignty of the people themselves, which was later set forth in the Declaration of Independence. Gloucester County for many years extended entirely across the State and included all of Atlantic County and all of Camden County. The territory now in Atlantic County was not separated from Gloucester County until 1837 which was 151 years after the founding of Gloucester County. Camden County was not created until 1844.Seehttp://www.nj.searchroots.com/Gloucesterco/gchistory.htm Camden, Swedesboro, Evesham Mount, Mount Holly, Woodbury, and Salem are just a few of the South Jersey towns that were stops on the Underground Railroad in the 1860s. On their way to freedom, slaves passed through these towns on their way from Philadelphia to New York. New Jersey was intimately associated with Philadelphia and the adjoining section in the underground system, and afforded at least three important outlets for runaways from the territory west of the Delaware River. Our knowledge of these outlets is derived solely from the testimony of the Rev. Thomas Clement Oliver, who, like his father, traveled the New Jersey routes many times as a guide and conductor. The third route was called, from its initial station, the Greenwich line. This station is vividly described as having been made up of a circle of Quaker residences enclosing a swampy place that swarmed with blacks. One may surmise that it made a model station. Slaves were transported at night across the Delaware River from the vicinity of Dover, in boats marked by a yellow light hung below a blue one, and were met some distance out from the Jersey shore by boats showing the same

lights. Landed at Greenwich, the fugitives were conducted north twenty-five miles to Swedesboro, and thence about the same distance to Evesham Mount. From this point they were taken to Mount Holly, and so into the northern or Philadelphia route. This is version 7 of George Morgan Descendants. This month I have added information from death certificates from NJ archives which was obtained for me by Eugene Wills of NJ. I have added my own Morgans at the bottom without knowing where or if they fit in to the George Morgan descendancy, but my great grandfather was called (Sidney) George Morgan and according to my great Anna Franklin Morgan, was related to Captain George C. Morgan of Mantua-maybe a cousin in some way. Last month I corrected Peter Morgan (he had only one marriage, not two), due to an email from a descendant of Peter Jessup Morgan whose parentage I do not know at this time. I read once that a wagon train of Morgan related families left PA/NJ in 1837 and headed west. His son Thomas Cheesman Morgan was born in Millville, Gloucester, NJ 8 March 1837, so the wagon train must have left after that date. His younger brothers and sisters are born after that between Illinois and Iowa, and Peter Jessup Morgan himself dies in Nebraska. Some of his children die in Oregon. His brother Isaac married Mary Otto at the same time. Bödo Otto Jr., was surgeon in the Continental Army. I think some of this family went to Indiana after 8 March 1837 (after Thomas Cheeseman Morgan, was born in Millville, Gloucester, son of Peter Jessup Morgan, born 10 May 1800, who went west with wife Hannah Jane Cheesman, b. 25 Dec 1812 ) and before 1840. Margaret Otto as well as Maria, her stepchild, went with the Morgans west. Bodo and Peter stayed in NJ. I believe I read that around 1837 30 Morgan families from NJ and PA made a wagon train thru Ohio and on to Indiana and points southward. I've been working on my Morgan family for a little over 25 years now. Only recently did I make a breakthrough, partly with the discovery of some new information that my mother, who died in 1987, had written down back in high school about her family and it ended up with my aunt's family. My great-grandmother was Alice Belle Morgan, daughter of John and Catherine (Hahn) Morgan. I found a family bible which listed John's parents as George and Patience Morgan. The newly uncovered information from my mom had John's full name as John Otto Morgan. I am pasting a copy of what I wrote in my research notes to remind me how I determined John's ancestry: This is how I determined that John Otto Morgan was the son of George W. and Patience (Eacrit) Morgan, and that George W. Morgan was the son of Jonathan and Margaret (Otto) Morgan. The following comment appears in John and Catherine (Hahn) Morgan's family bible: "Died on the 17th of February 1887, John Morgan, son of George and Patience Morgan. Aged 66 years, seven months and 25 days." This put his birth date at 22 June 1820. I then went to the 1820 New Jersey census index and found that there were only two George Morgans living in New Jersey that year. Contacting historical societies for both counties, I found that the George Morgan from Gloucester County had married a Patience Eacrit. This George Morgan was living near a Bodo Morgan. With the help of a cousin I discovered over the internet, I found both a George Washington and a Bodo Morgan baptized at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Swedesboro, Gloucester County, New Jersey, with Jonathan and Margaret Morgan as their parents. Also in church records, I found a Jonathan Morgan marrying a Margaret Otto in 1796. According to research by the Otto Family Association, Margaret was the brother of Bodo Otto, Revolutionary War doctor. This would explain John Morgan's middle name (Otto) and his uncle having been named Bodo. Okay, that's how I figured things out. I have since found a book titled, A History of The Family of Morgan, From The Year 1089 to Present Times by James Appleton Morgan, that has Jonathan Morgan in it and traces his family back to the 16th century. Mind you, I am a very cautious genealogist. I have to make sure my information is well-documented before I add it to my family tree. I am currently looking for a source to back up what the book says, although it does seem to be well researched. According to the book, Jonathan's father George was the brother of Sarah Morgan, Daniel Boone's mother. I hope you have found this information useful. He may have been a soldier in the Revolution (in the same class as Artis Seagrave), Oct. 20, 1777 (NG55), but on September 15, 1778, Inquisition proceedings were instituted against him charging him with being a Loyalist. Such proceedings were usually based upon an affidavit of an official or of neighbors. The proceedings were not always pressed to judgment (NJA, 2nd. ser. 2:470; LNJ 255,296). No advertisement for the sale of his property, and none for creditors to present claims have been seen (NJHSP 1961:75). Ananias was a witness to the will of Benjamin Maul, of Hopewell, Cumberland County, on August 13, 1776 (NJA 34:341). He was at Pine Tavern in 1778, 1780, 1789, 1797 (CSB 142). (An Ananias was in the census of 1790 in North Carolina.) On December 14, 1799, 42 acres belonging to Ananias, in Pittsgrove, adjoining John Mayhew, Esq., deceased, and John Ellits, were sold by the Sheriff to Champneys Rambo, pursuant to a judgment and execution obtained by Artis Seagreave (SH 177) in the Common Pleas Court. The deed was dated March 26, 1800 (UD 674). This land was 3 in the Division of the land of Abraham Nelson (3) at Maple Grove. On January 9, 1800, John Hutchinson made a deed to Ananias Nelson for 80 acres (plus), pursuant to which 80 30/100 acres near Pine Tavern, in Woolwich Township, Gloucester County, adjoining Wade Mulford, John Hutchinson, Joseph Stokes, and Isaac Ivins, were on April 26, 1804, surveyed to Ananias, and approved August 9, 1804 (WJ AA:276). On Sept. 16, 1830, in the Village Herald of Woodbury, Abraham Nelson published a notice directed to Justices of the Peace, etc., not to marry his daughter, Hannah, to Bodo Morgan. (Bodo was a son of Jonathan Morgan, and a grandson of George Morgan, says John D. F. Morgan, Esq.). Hannah (7), nevertheless, married Bodo Morgan, probably in 1830, and died by 1842. The heirs of Abraham Nelson (6), children, no doubt, were: i. A??ariah (7) Nelson, who, on Nov. 9, 1854, sold to Joseph Jessup, 8 acres in Harrison Township, adjoining Samuel Porch and Samuel Duel, which Wm. Elwell, administrator of the estate of Abraham Nelson, had sold to Azariah, Feb. 3, 1852 (GD Q4:325). ii. Joseph, iii. Mary (7), wed Wade Mulford, iv. Patience, wed Charles Commings, v. Hannah, wed Bodo Morgan. Hannah (Nelson) Morgan, and Bodo, had but one child: i. Abraham N. Morgan (8), born August 14, 1831. Cross, all their rights within a survey on Reed's Branch made to Sears (Sears Cedar Swamp) (GD U4:137). On August 21, 1835, Susann Nelson, Chester County, Pa., Frederick Fisher and Elizabeth, his wife (nee Nelson), of Philadelphia, and Hezekiah Nelson, and Matilda, his wife, of Chester County, as heirs of George Nelson (6), conveyed two tracts in Pittagrove Township to Jonsthan Burroughs (SC PP:600); and on Aug. 25, 1835, Susan Nelson, Chester Co., Pa., Frederick Fisher and Elizabeth (Nelson), his wife, Phila. Co., Hezekiah and Matilda Nelson, Chester Co. sold to Jonathan Burrough, 1.05 acres in Pittsgrove Township, and 20 acres in Woolwich Township, which descended from Ananias to George. George died intestate, the grantors being his heirs. Witnesses Jos. H. Atkinson, et al (GD N3:312). Samuel Nelson (5) of Pittsgrove Township, made a will, dated Jan. 4, 1796, in which he gave to his wife, Elizabeth, 2 horses, 3 cows, and the grain at the Tavern Place (Pittstown), "and at my other place"; gave to his mother, Keziah, the house "where she

now lives" and 1/2 acre adjoining, etc.; devised to his daughter Mary Nelson, land adjoining Samuel Elwell's land, etc.; devised to his two sons, Joseph and John the "place where I formerly lived, adjoining Joseph Van Meter's land"; devised to his son, John, a 6 acre lot South of Judah Foster's land and an 18 acre field adjoining Joseph Van Meter's land; and other lands to Joseph and John; etc. He authorized his executors to sell the Tavern Place, and pay the profits of his lands to bring up the children until they became of age. The executors named were Elizabeth Nelson and Benjamin Champneys, who at the time of the probate, had "long since" died. The witnesses were Benjamin Robinson, Rebeckah Hughs, and Jedediah Dubois. The Will was proved by Rebecca Hutchinson, late Rebecca Hughs, on April 10, 1839 (43 years after it was signed), and Joseph C. Nelson qualified as administrator c.t.a. (SS D:225). (Bodo was a son of Jonathan Morgan, and a grandson of George Morgan, says John D. F. Morgan, Esq.) Hannah (7), nevertheless, married Bodo Morgan, probably in 1830, and died by 1842. Hannah (Nelson) Morgan, and Bodo, had but one child: i. Abraham N. Morgan (8), born August 14, 1831. Bodo Morgan having wed (2), in 1842, Rhoda MaGague, they conveyed to Abram N. Morgan, of Franklin Township, on February 23, 1845, 30.50 acres in Franklin Township on the road from Whig Lane to Hardingville, adjoining Bodo's other land and the Ecret survey (GD R4:101). Bodo left a will probated April 1, 1869. Executor Abram N. Morgan, who qualified (GS F:366). Abraham N. Morgan (8), married Margaret Butler, and had three children: Wesley, Hannah, and Anna Corinda (Carr). Abraham N. died March 2, 1915, and Oscar E. He was hellochopter to Cooper Truma Center in Camden, N. J. Where he when into surgory for six hours to save his left leg. He also fractured his hip and plivis. Broke his calour bone, thigh bone and the small bone in the calf of his left leg. He had a brain injury, whitch left him is a coma for two and a half weeks. When he was release form Cooper he was barely consess. He went to A. I. Dupont in Willington, Del., This is a childrens hospital and rehab center. He was an in patent there for two months and out patent for one. He is still under there care and returns for check ups and testing. He has had seven oporation on his leg in the last eight month and on Feb. 19, 1996 is going in for his nineth to put a new rod in his leg. On Feb. 26, 1996 he returned to Cooper Hospital for an infaction in his leg. They had to remove the new rod and replace with a brace, from hip to toes. He has now had a total 13 operations. In Oct. of 1996 Luke returned to Cooper Hospital to repair his diaphragm and remove his stomach from his chest. He also had a colaped lung. The family below is possibly the family my great great aunt Ann Franklin Morgan said were our Morgan relatives transporting goods on the canal boats (probably Durhams) between Trenton and Philadelphia before the Civil War. Christian and sons are listed as waterman which must mean working on the water. Carpenter's Landing- now called Mantua, was then a place of active business in cord-wood, lumber, and ship timber, employing many sloops and small vessels in the trade. http://www.10crucialdays.org/html/durham.htm These craft were able to travel down the river through its many shallows because when fully loaded, they drew only about 24 inches of water. They were able to travel against the current and through the treacherous rapids up the Delaware River because when partially loaded with a cargo of about 2 tons, they drew only about 3 inches of water Durham boats played an important part in Washington's Crossing of the Delaware on December 25, 1776. Washington wrote to Governor Livingston of New Jersey, directing him to secure "Boats and Craft, all along the Delaware side... particularly the Durham Boats" for his anticipated crossing. I have seen claims that Daniel Morgan was his cousin, his uncle or his nephew. None proven. Daniel boone was the son of Squire Boone and Sarah Morgan. This particular Sarah Morgan was the daughter of Edward Morgan of Gwynedd, PA. This family is well documented and there is no proven connection at this point to Daniel Morgan. There is a gentleman named Stewart Baldwin that is a descendant of this family and has written many papers documenting the lineage. Most of his work is available on the internet if you do a search. As far as John Hunt Morgan. He was a Confederate general who was born in Huntsville, AL and moved to Lexington, KY as a youth. My gg grandfather claimed to be his second cousin, although, again there is no proof. John Hunt Morgan was also reported to be a lineal descendant of General Daniel Morgan, again no proof.
