Joe First Reconciliation and First Communion Weekend Today 34 of our young parishioners will be receiving Jesus in Holy Communion for the first time. It is a wonderful day for them, their families and for us as a parish community. Several years ago we started having First Communion take place at the parish Mass, both at the 9:00AM and the 10:30AM for our Spanish speaking families. I think this is a wonderful way to celebrate First Communion because the greater community is included. By celebrating First Communion at the parish Mass, it is also a reminder to all of us of our own First Communion and how our relationship with Jesus took on new meaning for us as his disciples. On Saturday morning, these same children experienced the mercy and forgiveness of Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Several years ago we decided to put the two sacraments on the same day to try and teach the children the connection between the two sacraments. Congratulations to our 34 young parishioners and their families on this special weekend. As a pastor it gives me great joy to share with them the Body of Christ at Mass! The shepherds were not considered important people in society at the time yet without them, there would be less food for the table and less animals for sacrifice to God. Since the hills were covered with different flocks, a shepherd would have a unique call or sound for his flock. All the flocks would graze together but at the end of the day when it was time to return the sheep to their pens, the shepherd would put out his call and his sheep would follow him. In places where there are still people who are shepherds for a living, this still happens daily. The image of the shepherd is one that Jesus used often in describing his relationship with his followers. Today's gospel from John is no exception. Jesus says: "I am the Good Shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep...i am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me..." Why does Jesus call himself a good shepherd? He does because he knows he will soon lay down his life for his followers and as he says in the gospel even for those who do not belong yet. Shepherds always laid down their lives for their sheep. Their flock was as important as their family. If one was lost, the shepherd would seek it out using his unique call. He would not leave it behind. Jesus promises the same to us. He says he is not the kind of shepherd just hired to do a job. That kind of shepherd abandons his flock. Jesus lays down his life willingly. In the first reading from Acts, Peter tells the people about Jesus, the Good Shepherd. How the man who was handicapped may have thought he was abandoned but he was cured through the power of Jesus Christ. There are times in life when anyone can feel abandoned by God, whether it be family problems, work related issues, illness or even the death of someone. Those are the times when the Shepherd is seeking us out. He cannot find us if we don't listen for his call. We can only hear him when we take time to be with Him, when we take time to pray.
