Descendants of William Clenney Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM 1 CLENNEY was born Abt. 1684 in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, and died in St. Mary's District (Hillsborough District), Orange County, North Carolina. He married MARIA SPRINGER 1716, daughter of CHARLES SPRINGER. Notes for WILLIAM CLENNEY: He was born in or around Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. It is speculated that his father may have been Abraham Clenney, who records show resided in Sussex County, Delaware in 1676. It is said William and Mary acquired land from the William Penn heirs shortly after their marriage. More About WILLIAM CLENNEY and MARIA SPRINGER: Marriage: 1716 Children of WILLIAM CLENNEY and MARIA SPRINGER are: 2. i. SAMUEL 2 CLENNEY, b. Aft. 1715, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. ii. REBECCA CLENNEY, b. 1717, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware; m. JAMES ROBESON, 1736. Notes for REBECCA CLENNEY: It is said that Rebecca was married in the Old Swede's church. More About JAMES ROBESON and REBECCA CLENNEY: Marriage: 1736 3. iii. WILLIAM CLENNEY, b. 1719, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. iv. CAROLUS CLENNEY, b. 1721, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. v. JANE CLENNEY, b. 1723, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. 4. vi. MARIA CLENNEY, b. 1726, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. vii. HANNAH CLENNEY, b. 1728, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. viii. JANE CLENNEY, b. 1730, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. ix. SARAH CLENNEY, b. 1734, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware; m. WILLIAM WHITETED, 1754. Notes for SARAH CLENNEY: It is said that Sarah was married in the Old Swede's church. More About WILLIAM WHITETED and SARAH CLENNEY: Marriage: 1754 Generation No. 2 2. SAMUEL 2 CLENNEY (WILLIAM 1 ) was born Aft. 1715 in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. Notes for SAMUEL CLENNEY: In July, 1770 he sold land to his brother, William. His parents, William Clenney, Sr. and Mary Clenney willed property to Samuel and in September, 1770 he sold his remaining 350 acres to innkeeper, William Marshall. As Samuel's name is not found in Delaware records after 1773, we assume that is when he and his brother William moved from Delaware to Orange County, North Carolina shortly before the Revolutionary War where they appear in the 1779 census of St. Mary's District. There is an Orange County land deed to Samuel Clenlay from Isaac Edwards (2-6 1771) Book 3, page 539, which could have been an error and perhaps should have been 1777. In 1975 Samuel issued a will in which he named William, Samuel Jr. and Jonathan, but failed to name his daughters to whom he gave a claim on land of the "Western Waters" as all Tennessee was said to have been called at that time. This may have been the Jonathan Clenney who settled in White County around 1824. 1

Children of SAMUEL CLENNEY are: i. RACHEL 3 CLENNEY, b. 1756. ii. WILLIAM CLENNEY, b. 1758; m. X. CARSON. Notes for WILLIAM CLENNEY: William stated late in life that his family moved into Philadelphia after they sold their land in Delaware and before they moved to North Carolina. He was active in the Revolutionary war fighting against the king of England. William enlisted in the United States Army at Hillsborough, Orange County, North Carolina on August 10, 1776. His regiment commander was Colonel Ramsey, his company commander was General William Williams, and the Brigade Commander was General Parsons. During May, 1777 his tour of service expin may or June of 1781, William again enlisted in the US Army in Orange County, North Carolina this time for a term of twelve months. iii. REBECCA CLENNEY, b. 1760. 3. WILLIAM 2 CLENNEY (WILLIAM 1 ) was born 1719 in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. Notes for WILLIAM CLENNEY: As William's name is not found in Delaware records after 1773, we assume that is when he and his brother Samuel moved from Delaware to Orange County, North Carolina shortly before the Revolutionary War where they appear in the 1779 census of St. Mary's District. Child of WILLIAM CLENNEY is: i. WILLIAM 3 CLENNEY, m. ELIZABETH GILPIN. 4. MARIA 2 CLENNEY (WILLIAM 1 ) was born 1726 in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. She married JAMES HALL Jul 01, 1746 in Old Swede's Church, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. He was born Abt. 1728 in Kennett Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Notes for MARIA CLENNEY: Andrew Bergstrom (bergstrom@aol.com) provided this information: He says Mary married and moved to Orange County, NC where she raised her children and later died. Her unnamed brother filed a DAR application stating he was born in Wilmington, DE and then moved to NC with his father. Her date of marriage has also been reported as 12 September 1750. More About JAMES HALL and MARIA CLENNEY: Marriage: Jul 01, 1746, Old Swede's Church, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware Children of MARIA CLENNEY and JAMES HALL are: i. LEVI 3 HALL, b.
