THE GOSPEL of JOHN CHAPTER 21:1-14 MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER SM-432 DECEMBER 21, 2001 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: THE MAKING OF FISHERS OF MEN THE THEME OF THE BOOK: John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: TOPICAL SUBJECT SEARCH KEYWORDS: Evangelism, Salvation, Souls, Vision, Ministry INTRODUCTION to the text John 21:1-14 THE MAKING OF FISHERS OF MEN 1 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, - and in this way He showed Himself: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any food?" They answered Him, "No." 6 And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right (other) side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast, and now - they were not able to draw in the net because of the multitude of fish. 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits 300 ft.), dragging the net with fish. 9 Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish which you have just caught." 11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land,

full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them, "Come and eat breakfast." Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are You?"-- knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. 14 This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead. This Teaching of the Apostle John is Racing Toward the Climax of Existence The Knowing of God CHAPTER 21 BRINGS US TO THE END OF MAN S PURSUIT FOR MEANING IT OPENS A BRAND NEW WORLD, BOTH FOR THIS LIFE AND ETERNITY!!! 2 YEARS AGO WE LEARNED THE THEME TO THIS GREAT BOOK THE THEME OF THE BOOK IS: John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: But as many as Received Him John 20:30-31 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

But as many as Received Him 1 John 5:12-13 He who has the Son has (Possession) life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name (His Authority) of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you (may continue to ) believe in the name of the Son of God. GREEK: IN ON GOING BELIEVING THAT WILL TAKE PLACE BASED UPON POSSESSING JESUS CHRIST John 21:25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen. IT S NO WONDER WHY THIS BIBLE SAYS 1 Corinthians 2:9 It is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him." John 14:2-3 "In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. But as many as Received Him THIS OLD WORLD NEEDS JESUS CHRIST NOW MORE THAN EVER AMERICA NEEDS JESUS THE MAKING OF FISHERS OF MEN IF WE LEARN ANYTHING THIS MORNING ABOUT MINISTRY WE MUST FIRST LEARN THAT TRUE MINISTRY CAN ONLY TAKE PLACE IF THE RESURRECTED JESUS CHRIST IS ALIVE IN YOUR LIFE / CHURCH / FAMILY

THE MAKING OF FISHERS OF MEN 1.) Jesus Shows Himself Alive vv. 1-2 a.) He To Them His Life v.1 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself That The Resurrected Jesus Christ is the Point of All That There is a Correlation Between Fishing for Fish and Catching Nothing Verses Fishing for the Souls of Men and Catching Everything Notice The Context; The Revelation of Himself to the Disciples was Intended to be the Catalyst That Was to Propel Them into the World THE MAKING OF FISHERS OF MEN Jesus Shows Himself Alive; He To Them His Life Verse 1 After these things Jesus showed Himself again Showed grk 5319 phaneroo (fan-er-o'-o); to declare openly and publicly. To clearly make ones self-known. (Approachable and available)

It s Jesus Mode of Operation Matthew 4:18-20 Three and Half years earlier And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." 20 They immediately left their nets and followed Him. Being fishermen was what they did. Becoming fishers of men was who they were Mark 1:17 Then Jesus said to them, "Come after Me, and I will make you to become fishers of men." Acts 1:2-3 after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. John 1:31 John the Baptist - "I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, to declare openly and publicly. To clearly make ones self known. (approachable and available) John 2:11 At The Wedding in Cana ñ This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; The Fact That Jesus is Alive is Mankind s Only Hope "Nor is there salvation in any other, -Acts 4:12

THE MAKING OF FISHERS OF MEN 2.) Jesus Showed Them Their Weakness vv. 3-5 3 Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any food?" They answered Him, "No." THIS IS THE MOMENT OF THEIR REALIZATION - I need help in my life That Reality can be a Petrifying Encounter Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went out and immediately got into the boat, Verse 3b that night they caught nothing. What s Implied in the Greek Language Here Is that this, the night, they will catch nothing Jesus is in Absolute Control (even when the fish aren t biting) Mark 10:27 But Jesus looked at them and said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible." If What s Before Me is God s Will Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

We can t even breathe on our own If it isn t the will of God James 4:13-15 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit"; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that." I Heard on a Radio Call In Program With Doctor Dean Edell That if we couldn t fart we d all die in a matter of a few days (men fart & women fluff) That Should Cause All of Us to Walk Humbly before God Verse 4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Verse 5 Then Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any food?" They answered Him, "No." Children grk 3813 paidion (pae-dee'-on); Only time us in the N.T. - An infant child to a half-grown boy. One in need of education, instruction lessons. Hey Little Boys In Need of Lessons have you any food?" They answered Him, "No."

In Greek it s; you have nothing to eat - do you? not even a fish - do you? They answered Him, "No." That s quite a confession from a bunch of fishermen zip! THE MAKING OF FISHERS OF MEN 3.) Jesus Shows Them Instruction vv. 6-11 a.) in What He Has Told Us to Do v.6a And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish What s Wrong With The Left Side of the Boat? Have Faith in what God says to do Matthew 17:24-27 When they had come to Capernaum, those who received the temple tax came to Peter and said, "Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?" 25 He said, "Yes." And when he had come into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their sons or from strangers?" 26 Peter said to Him, "From strangers." Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are free. 27 "Nevertheless, lest we offend them, (pay the IRS)go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you." Christian Stop going fishing with your feelings and emotions and have faith in God

Jesus Shows Them Instruction in What He Has Told Us to Do b.) What He Has said v.6b So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish Where were all the fish - all night long? 1 Samuel 15:22 does the LORD have as great a delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams. God Blesses Obedience period!!! He Says Pray for the Sick Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to Him (Christ) who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Jesus Shows Them Instruction c.) with Him is His Desire v.7-10 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It s the Lord!" Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits (a football field), dragging the net with fish. 9 Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish which you have just caught." 11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; (153) and although there were so many, the net was not broken.
