Our guest speaker at this year s celebration will be Scott Volk. Scott is Messianic Jewish Believer who came to faith in 1975. From Our Pastor Only By His Mercy and Grace His mercies are new every morning. Lamentations 3:23 Every time I read the above verse of scripture I smile. I have known the Lord for many years now and even after this many years, I get emotional about the mercy of God. The thought that his mercies are new every single day overwhelms me with thoughts of love and gratitude. I simply cannot wrap my head around the thought of what His mercy and grace has brought to my underserving life. Make no mistake about it, it took both mercy and grace on His part to brign this life of hope and salvation. I have heard the terms mercy and grace my whole life, but didn t honestly understand the difference until recently. Mercy is God withholding from me what I really deserve, while grace is God giving to me what I could never earn. In terms of my salvation, mercy is proven by the fact that God chose not to judge me to hell when I surely deserved it. Grace, on the other hand, is God choosing to give me an eternal life when I could never earn it. I once heard a preacher explain it like this: Suppose you were speeding down a road going 15 miles over the speed limit and got pulled over by a police officer. Suppose in his mercy, he decided to let you off with a warning. I d say that would be a merciful act on his part. Let s say that beyond the mercy he had shown that he then determined to also treat you with grace. Let s suppose that in his grace he decided to also give you a hundred dollars as a gift simply because you had crossed his path that day. In reality, if you had not been breaking the law, he would have had no contact with you that day. Wow! What a picture of grace? This is exactly what Jesus did for us at the cross. In His mercy, he has withheld from us the judgment that we were surely owed. In His grace, He has promised us eternal life; one that we could never earn. Not that s mercy and grace. I hope I never get over that kind of love. Isn t our Father amazing? Michael E. Devine Pastoral Staff: Michael E. Devine, Senior Pastor (mikedevine@covenantbible.org) ext. 250 Nathan R.
