3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 Dear friends and parishioners, If you were to travel to the hills of southern Indiana this weekend and visit a certain Benedictine abbey (monastery) there, you would probably discover that the monks are not, like us, celebrating the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, but are rather exercising their privilege of celebrating the feast day of their patron saint, St. Meinrad. Many of the diocesan priests of Toledo are very much aware of this day, 21 January, because many of us had some part of our seminary education (either high school, college, or graduate School of Theology, or some combination thereof) at what we fondly call the Holy Hill. It all started in 1854 when a small group of Benedictines from Einsiedeln in Switzerland went to southern Indiana to answer an invitation to come and educate local boys and young men for the priesthood, and that mission would include diocesan priests and as well as monastic priests. Einsiedeln, it turns out, is a large monastery founded on the site where a Benedictine hermit by the name of Meinrad (Meginratus in Latin) had his little hermitage (which is loosely speaking what Einsiedeln means). Because he was murdered by a couple of robbers who mistakenly believed he possessed valuable golden chalices and such, and whom he invited into his tiny chalet to share a little food at his table, St. Meinrad is known as the martyr of hospitality. All this happened in the year 861. The great thing is that many Toledo priests love to return to St. Meinrad Archabbey frequently because, among other things, the monks there continue to keep the rule of hospitality written into the Rule of St. Benedict: Treat every guest as Christ. Whenever a county/city within the Diocese of Toledo is placed under a Level 3 Snow Emergency, during which all roadways are closed to nonemergency personnel, the Catholic Churches within that geographic region will cancel the scheduled Saturday Vigil, Sunday, or Holy Day Masses. Roman Catholics in that region, therefore, are dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass. If Masses are cancelled, Catholics are encouraged to participate in Holy Mass via television, radio, or internet, making a spiritual Communion. When Mass is cancelled, all other diocesan, parish, or school events in that geographic region are also cancelled. To help make Baptism a truly meaningful ceremony, parents are asked to attend a Baptismal Preparation Class. This can be done before the birth of the baby. It is important for parents to understand the Sacrament, the ceremony, and the responsibilities that follow. The next Baptismal Prep Session will be February 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the Lourdes Room. To register for the class or to schedule a Baptism, call the Parish Office at 419-865-2345. All parents must take a class before their child is baptized.
