Jubilee Year of Mercy Liturgical Bits & Bytes Main Parts of the Eucharistic Liturgy The Eucharistic liturgy has four main parts: The GATHERING RITE which ritually forms us into a worshipping assembly of believers. The LITURGY OF THE WORD, also called the TABLE OF THE WORD to show its relative importance of the liturgy of the Eucharist. We are fed at both, but in different ways. The LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST which begins with the preparation of the gifts and continues through the communion rite. The DISMISSAL RITE, which sends us forth to bring our experience of Christ to the world. Copyright 2008 Resource Publications, Inc. All rights reserved Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship Catholics Care. Catholics Vote. Practice Civil Dialogue. In their statement on Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the U.S. Catholic bishops remind Catholics that we are called to engage in charitable, respectful and civil dialogue during election season. In a culture that is dominated by "partisan attacks, sound bites and media hype," the Church calls for "a different kind of political engagement" (no. 14). Visit the Faithful Citizenship link on our parish website www.corpuschristimaine.org to access resources on civil dialogue and on how our faith calls us to engage during election season and beyond. We strongly urge all parishioners to register, to become informed on key issues and to vote. The Church does not support or oppose any candidate, but seeks to focus attention on the moral and human dimensions of issues. We do not authorize the distribution of partisan political materials on parish property. Readings for Sunday, October 23rd - The Reward of Humility Reading I Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18 (the God of justice) Reading II 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 (reward for fidelity) Gospel Luke 18:9-14 (the Pharisee and the tax collector) Key Passage: All who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted. (Luke 18:14) Adult: When have you gloated over the mistakes of others? How would humbling yourself make it different? Youth: Think of a time(s) when you were a show off or practiced being one up on someone. What is the problem with this? Saint of the Week St. Anthony Mary Claret On October 24th the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Anthony Mary Claret. Anthony was born in northern Spain in 1807. As a child he helped his father in his trade as a weaver. The local priest taught him Latin. He entered seminary in 1829 and was ordained a priest in 1835. Health problems prevented him from choosing the missionary life, but he founded a congregation of preachers, the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly called the Claretians. In 1849 he was made archbishop of Santiago in Cuba, where he was opposed by the slave owners and suffered numerous attempts on his life. He returned to Spain and became the confessor of Queen Isabella II, following her into exile after the revolution of 1868. He died two years later in France. He was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950. He is the patron saint of textile merchants, weavers, and technical and vocational educators. St John Notre Dame St. John As always, thank you for your continued support of our parish.

Faith Formation Did you know that in the early church Confirmation was part of Baptism? Yes, in the beginning only adults were brought into the faith, and when they were ready to be received into the church they were Baptized (water over their head, and anointed with oil of catechumen on their chest), Confirmed (anointed on their head with Holy Chrism) and received Communion all at the same time. Eventually most adults were received, so they began to bring children into the faith as well. When numbers grew so large that the Bishop was unable to keep up, it was decided to separate Baptism and Confirmation so that the priest could continue to Baptize children as needed, and the Bishop could still be a part of the initiation process by Confirming all those who had been Baptized in a ceremony once each year. Today, our diocese has restored the original order of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, allowing our seven year old children to become fully initiated into the faith. However, this is only the beginning of their learning. We continue to grow in the understanding of our faith as we continue to hear God s word at Sunday Eucharist, learn more through Faith Formation sessions and other opportunities, and live it each day. ELEMENTARY FAITH FORMATION Classes are held at the Faith Formation Center attached to St. John Catholic School, September-May. The Presence Radio Network CATHOLIC ANSWERS LIVE Hostile Witnesses w/ Gary Michuta Mon., 10/24, 6PM & Tues., 10/25, 6AM Gary was born into a devote Catholic home. In the late 1980 s, many of Gary s friends fell prey to anti-catholic Fundamentalist Protestants and left the Faith. For him, the Catholic Faith was something to be believed, but it didn t have anything to do with real life. All that changed, when in 1989, Gary struck up a friendship with an anti-catholic Fundamentalist and discovered that there is a rational, biblical, and historical case for Catholicism that is both compelling and exciting.
