First Sunday in Lent February 18, 2018 Starting Over Series Introduction - Part 2 - A New Attitude Connected to Christ Our Board of Directors has adopted a vision statement to propel St. Luke s into the future: Connected to Christ to Connect to Community. Starting in January, we re focusing our attention on the first part - Connected to Christ - by studying Jesus Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7. With this sermon, Jesus launched His followers into the world. Over the next few months we ll look at what Jesus said about a New Approach, a New Attitude, New Action, and a New Start. Jesus New Approach is a movement of God s people into the world as Salt and Light. But that will require a whole New Attitude. Our natural way of thinking is an if...then attitude. If I do good and work hard, then God will bless me and I ll have a good life. Jesus calls us to a because...therefore attitude. Because God has blessed me completely, forgiving all my sins and giving me the ultimate, eternal good life, therefore, I now seek to serve and obey Him. As We Gather: Christianity has often been misunderstood as a system of moral improvement by which we attain greatness in this life. Such were the Pharisees of Jesus day. But Jesus sets the record straight. True greatness comes when we follow Him into a whole new way, living that turns our attention away from ourselves and toward the world because we know with all confidence that Jesus has fulfilled all the requirements of greatness for us and given them to us as a gift. P: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; C: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. First Reading: James 1:12-18 (ESV) 12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, I am being tempted by God, for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 8
Hymn: Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed LSB 437 9
Holy Gospel: Matthew 5:17-20 (ESV) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fifth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord! 17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ! 10
Hymn of the Day: The Power of the Cross 1. Oh to see the dawn of the darkest day Christ on the road to Calvary Tried by sinful men torn and beaten then Nailed to a cross of wood Chorus 1 This the pow'r of the cross Christ became sin for us Took the blame bore the wrath We stand forgiven at the cross 2. Oh to see the pain written on Your face Bearing the awesome weight of sin Ev'ry bitter thought ev'ry evil deed Crowning Your bloodstained brow Chorus 1: 3. Now the daylight flees now the ground beneath Quakes as its Maker bows His head Curtain torn in two dead are raised to life Finished the vict'ry cry Chorus 1: 4. Oh to see my name written in the wounds For through Your suff'ring I am free Death is crushed to death life is mine to live Won through Your selfless love Chorus 2 This the pow'r of the cross Son of God slain for us What a love what a cost We stand forgiven at the cross 11
Sermon Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 12

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Benediction: God Blesses Us And Sends Us Out P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26) C: Amen. Closing Hymn: Christ, the Life of All the Living LSB 420:1, 2, 6, 7 14
6 Thou hast suffered great affliction And hast borne it patiently, Even death by crucifixion, Fully to atone for me; Thou didst choose to be tormented That my doom should be prevented. Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 7 Then, for all that wrought my pardon, For Thy sorrows deep and sore, For Thine anguish in the Garden, I will thank Thee evermore, Thank Thee for Thy groaning, sighing, For Thy bleeding and Thy dying, For that last triumphant cry, And shall praise Thee, Lord, on high.
