Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time From Rev. Msgr. Thomas More Coogan, Administrator Dear Good Folks of St. Joe s, Among the many stories of our parish that I am enjoying hearing about as I get to know you, there are a few that recount difficult days from your past. Perhaps the most powerful are the fond memories of our Saint Joseph School, which was divided between Girls and Boys at one time. The memory of the closing of our school still hurts many parishioners, nearly thirty years later. We can be rightly proud of how our Nursery School and Religious Education Program have grown to meet the needs of our young families since then. For this reason, the sad news of the closing of Our Lady of Lourdes School in West Islip that hit the papers last week was difficult to hear. The people of this parish can particularly appreciate the sense of loss and concern that the families in our neighboring parish are feeling. It is my thought that we can also serve as a source of hope for them - as an illustration of how a good faith community can grow past a dark chapter. Please keep them in your prayers, and if you have friends or family there, give them a kind word of encouragement. We at St. Joseph s can understand, care and stand in spiritual support of our sisters and brothers in Our Lady of Lourdes. At your service and theirs, Fr. Tom Feast of the Assumption This Wednesday, August 15th, is the Feast of the Assumption. It is a Holy Day of Obligation and Catholics are called to give honor to the Blessed Virgin Mary by celebrating the Eucharist, the sacrament her Son Jesus left us as His pledge to us, to feed us on our spiritual journey We will have Masses in the Church at: 7:45 am 9:00 am 12:15 pm 7:30 pm Sunday 5 PM Mass Notification The Sunday 5 PM Mass is being held in the Church. How am I using my gifts to serve others? Little Rock Bible Study "James, Peter, and Jude: The Catholic Letters " The Little Rock Scripture Study has been a part of the St. Joseph s Adult Enrichment program for several years. The selected study for this Fall covers four New Testament letters traditionally known as the Catholic Letters because each is written to strengthen Christian communities scattered across a wide region of the Roman Empire rather than a specific Christian community. Participants will discover that they contain profound differences as well as intriguing similarities. James is a work of wisdom literature, expounding on the themes of faith and good works, true wisdom, and the need for the rich to care for the poor. First Peter resembles a sermon on baptism. It is filled with moral exhortations about living out one's baptismal promises in a properly upright, faith-filled manner, especially in the face of suffering and persecution. Second Peter contains strong warnings and exhortations to avoid false teachings to maintain proper ethical conduct while awaiting the second coming of Jesus Christ. It shares much of its content with Jude, because of which, Jude is studied in conjunction with Second Peter. This study has 7 sessions, incorporating an introductory session and 6 lessons, beginning on Thursday October 4 th in the O Connell Room at 7:30 pm 9:00 pm. Session dates are Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25, Nov. 1, 8, & 15. The registration fee of $20 covers the cost of the study guide and CD wrap-up lecture. Please register by September 10 th at the Parish Center. Sunday, August 12, 2018 Deacon s Corner BE IMITATORS TODAYS READINGS, EPH, 4:30, 5:2, JN,6, 41:-51 Paul mentions an area where we can imitate God, and that is a willingness to forgive. The term that he uses is reciprocal. We are to be mutually forgiving. It flows back and forth between us. Today, it may be, that I am on the giving end. I am the one doing the forgiving. It only makes sense that I should do that, because just around the corner is another day, when the roles will be reversed. I will be on the receiving end. I will be the one who needs to be forgiven. In the Church, we carry a profound message of hope for a sinful world. It is that God is the great forgiver. But every day of our lives, we either confirm or deny that message by the way we deal with one another. If we fail to forgive, we are contradicting the very message that we preach. When we are mutually forgiving, we are simply imitating what God has already done for us in Christ. Paul said, Be imitators of God, as his dear children. But is it realistic? Can you and I truly become kind, compassionate and forgiving, just as God is? In our own strength, the answer is: No, we cannot. To attempt it would like blowing on our own sails, or pulling on our own bootstraps. If we are to imitate God, we must have help from outside ourselves. And that is the theme of our Gospel reading. There Jesus presents Himself as the living bread come down from heaven. Paul spoke of imitation. Jesus speaks of assimilation. He offers Himself as our spiritual food. His personality can be assimilated into our personalities, so that we become like Him. In the highest sense of the word, His life was a perfect imitation of God, He alone had seen the Father. And as He said in another place, The Son can do only what He sees the Father doing. His kindness, His compassion, His willingness to forgive were exact reproductions of these qualities as He had seen them in His Father. And when His life is incorporated into our lives, then it becomes possible for us to be imitators of God, as His dear children. LORD COME TO OUR ASSISTANCE Deacon Mike St. Joseph s Book Club St. Joseph s Book Club will meet September 13, 2018 in Room 256 at 7:30 pm. The book to be discussed is Camino Island by John Grisham. CYO Basketball Reminder to all parish 4th and 8th grader, CYO Basketball registration begins this month. Girls registration begins Monday, 8/6 & Boys registration begins Saturday, 8/25. Please see the parish website for more details: https://stjosephsbabylon.org/basketball. Any Questions? Contact Margaret Stroehlein at mgtmary02@yahoo.com. Reflections THE ROSARY IS THE WEAPON. PADRE PIO From time to time I am approached by parishioners with an idea that each would like shared with others in the parish. I usually try to accommodate such requests, especially if it would be beneficial to all of us. With the approach of the Feast of the Assumption, let me pass along a rather unique (though spiritually enriching) activity for readers to consider. On October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, there will be a campaign to unite the entire nation in prayer. At 4 p.m. eastern time, the Rosary will be said simultaneously throughout the country (and the world) from Maine to Hawaii. I am not sure exactly how it is going to work if it will be done individually or in groups but the objective is to have as many people as possible saying the Rosary at the same time. Need some practice? There is the Novena for Our Nation, a 54 Day Rosary Novena from August 15 to October 7. You should know there is a very faithful group of parishioners who pray the Rosary each morning prior to the 9 am. Mass. It usually begins around 8:20 am. And if you feel especially nationalistic, each Monday this same group prays the Patriotic Rosary by which all levels and branches of government, civic leaders, and individuals in each of the 50 states are remembered in a special way. It is the hope that this exercise will help our nation, founded on Judeo Christian principles, again value the wisdom of the founding fathers. Stay tuned for more information Capital Campaign Gift Recognition St. Joseph s Church Centennial Campaign has ended. With the conclusion of the Campaign, a plan has commenced for the recognition of those donors who have completed their pledge of $3,000.00 or more. Guidelines for the five levels of Gift Recognition were given in the Centennial Campaign Booklet. If you were at one of those levels, a letter with an enclosed form was sent to you in May. Unfortunately, all forms were not returned by the deadline June 22. Please complete the form that was enclosed to reflect the way in which you would like the donation to be acknowledged. As soon as all the forms are returned, we will assemble the names under the designated Level of Pledge and send them to the engraver. They will in turn set them on the pages that will be displayed in a brass Memorial Book which will be mounted in the Church. If you misplaced your form or if you have any questions, contact Mary Alice at 631-669-4179 or email markham96@optonline.net. So, please return the forms now. We thank you for your cooperation. Barbara Grywin has been a true supporter of our Teens with prayer & financial support over many years. This year Barbara offered a scholarship to one of our HS Graduating Seniors. The Teens were asked to write an essay, What Youth Ministry Means to Me. The Teacher in Barbara shone forth as she checked grammar and overall structure of the essays. When it came to deciding a winner Barbara was impressed and awarded $100 to 3 teens! We had a nice gathering and presentation with family & friends present. The teens read their essays and we celebrated with ice cream sundaes. Our award winners are: Matthew Donarumma Binghamton University Hope Hansen St Joseph s College Francesca Pierce Culinary Institute of America Congratulations to all.
