Saint Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church and School Community Our Mission Statement Saint Martin of Tours is a Roman Catholic Community bound together by the gift of faith in Jesus Christ, as we join Him in offering thanks and praise to God the Father through the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. Molded by the Word of God and nourished by the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation, we are sent to seek out the lost, bind the broken, feed the hungry, and to share the Good News of God s mercy and love for all. We welcome all people of goodwill to join us in building here on Earth the coming Reign of God and so to offer to people of all ages continued formation in our Christian Faith. The Second Sunday of Lent February 25, 2018 Pastor s Note Prayer and Prayer Life In this time of Lent, one of the things that we need to do is to consider how our prayer life is. There is a distinction between saying some prayer every day and having a prayer life. The second one is the one we should work towards. Many say a prayer sometimes, but to have a prayer life requires the intention to conquer the habit of prayer and live in some way that our day goes around our prayers. The decision we make should be to always ponder in prayer before the final resolution. Life of prayer means to be immersed in God, and from there see the world in which we live. Each one of us have things in life that we like, we have our hobbies, our profession, the things we are good at, and the things that we are not good at even when we would like to be. Prayer is considered in a similar way, but we, who were saved by the love of God manifested in Jesus, cannot have prayer as a hobby that we take on when we are in need, or just sometimes when we feel we like it. Prayer is what makes a person as strong or not in spiritual things. If you don t know how your spiritual life is, just ask yourself: how is my prayer? How often do I pray? How profound is my prayer? How much do I try to improve every day? The answer to this question will let you know how your spiritual life is. To understand this better I will give you an example of things familiar to many. We all have friends who play golf, and many of us also play. But sometimes when you meet someone who is passionate for this sport, after they find out you play, many will ask you what is your handicap? If you answer that you don t know, or you don t have one, they immediately will know that you are not serious about golf. It is just a hobby, a thing that you like but you don t apply yourself to. And that is fine. But when we treat our prayer in the same way, then that is not good. Prayer and Christian life are inseparable, for they concern the same love and the same renunciation, proceeding from love; the same filial and loving conformity with the Father's plan of love; the same transforming union in the Holy Spirit who February 24 March 3 Saturday 5:00 Soledad Ramos & Vincent Ramos Sunday 7:00 Robert Rylee Monday 8:30 Leslie Plecque 10:00 St. Martin of Tours Parishioners 11:30 Jean-Paul Guilmineau 6:00 Soledad Domingo 8:00 Right to Life Tuesday 8:00 Conception Mateo Wednesday 8:00 Fancisca Mello Thursday 8:00 Patricia Coldon Scardino Friday 8:00 Aida Belano Saturday 8:00 Kerry Amermino conforms us more and more to Christ Jesus; the same love for all men, the love with which Jesus has loved us. "Whatever you ask the Father in my name, he [will] give it to you. This I command you, to love one another."(jn 15 16-17). He "prays without ceasing" who unites prayer to works and good works to prayer. Only in this way can we consider as realizable the principle of praying without ceasing. (Origen, De orat. PG 11,452). Prayer is itself a gift to obtain another gift, which consists of to know, to understand, to love, to glorify God and to be united with God. And in doing so, the logical consequence is that we will be transformed. If we really apply to prayer, our lives should be transformed according to the model we contemplate in our prayers. Silence is important in prayer, because prayer is not only to say, ask or praise God, but also to listen to him. Without silence we cannot listen and without listening, prayer is just a monologue. In this time of Lent, find the time to pause and pray, to ask and listen what the Lord wants to say to you. -Fr. Sergio

Are you focusing on Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving or maybe just one in particular? We recently gathered together for our Faith and Family Night to reflect and discuss Lenten practices and we focused primarily on Fasting. We often only associate fasting with food, and this is important to help us deepen our prayer and focus on God. By only having one full meal and two smaller ones, we tend to appreciate what we do eat and we may eat more mindfully. At our Faith and Family Night we explored what it would look like if we fasted from practices like arguing, complaining, and judging? What if we fasted from mindless TV, video games and social media? We asked if it would it be possible to fast from rushing, over-eating, or entitlement? The 40- days of Lent goes by more quickly than we often realize, so we invite you to join us in finding a new way of fasting that will hopefully bring us closer in our relationship with Jesus as we prepare for Easter. If you have a question you d like us to address or a Faith Formation related update you d like to share, please email Daniel (dvalcazar@stmartin.org. I look forward to this new way to engage with you! Rite of Christian Initiation of Adult This is the 2nd Sunday of Lent, a season where Catholics often make new commitments to their faith. This Sunday s readings can provide both challenge and great hope. Can we imagine giving to God that which we most love? What Lenten practices might help us to grow to trust God like Abraham? What might your life look like after God shows you the glory of Jesus Transfiguration? If you d find it helpful to join others as we explore these questions, we gather from 7-9 PM each Thursday, so bring your questions and an open heart. All are Welcome, ALWAYS! Adult Confirmation! This process is for those who are: over 16 years of age; no longer in High School; Baptized and receiving Eucharist. Sessions begin on Sunday morning February 25 th and end on May 6 th. The Confirmation Rite will be celebrated at the Cathedral on Pentecost Sunday, May 20 th. Sessions are from 11:15am- 12:15pm. Register by emailing Daniel at dvalcazar@stmartin.org..lenten Fasting & Penance Days of Abstinence All Fridays in Lent Monday, March 12 Every Saturday No meat for those over age 14. Lenten Reconciliation 7:00pm In Church 3:30pm (except March 31) Contact Daniel at (408) 289-9608 or dvalcazar@stmartin.org Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults This past Tuesday night, our Catechumens (below) celebrated the Rite of Election at the Cathedral. + Matt Brann + Lily Rogers + Albert Guzman They are now known as the Elect because they have been called by name and they have answered that call in desiring the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, 1 st Eucharist). Monsignor Cilia, on behalf of Bishop McGrath, declared that they will be fully initiated through these sacraments at this year s Easter Vigil. Please keep our Elect in your prayers as they enter into this special time of purification and enlightenment, a time of deeper reflection in their final preparation for their reception of the Easter sacraments. We also invite you to join the Elect for the Scrutinies. These Rites involve the Elect closely examining (scrutinizing) their lives and exploring how they can grow closer to Jesus through their prayer and actions. During Lent we are all invited to explore how we can grow closer to Jesus. The 1 st Scrutiny will be on Saturday March 3 rd at the 5:00pm Mass, the 2 nd Scrutiny will be March 11 th at the 11:30am Mass, and the 3 rd Scrutiny will be March 18 th at the 10:00am Mass and we hope you can join us.
